To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD H. Mossme- HOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Flush- Valve, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in valves for flushing or other tanks and has for its object to provide a float controlled means for automatically closing an outlet valve member.
Another object' of the invention is to provide means for tripping a flush valve and bind the valve to its seat after being tripped.
With the above and other objects in view, I have invented the device illustrated in t'he accompanying-drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a side-view of flush valve, with all the members in the positions, assumed when flushing tank is filled with water, all ready for the flushing operation. Fig. 2 shows same valve open, while the flushing operation is in progress, the receding water level of tank allowing float 35 to lower into valve-closing position, as indicated by dotted lines.
Similar characters refer to similar parts, throughout the several views.
Number 1 indicates a tank pipe connection provided with an internal bracket 2, carrying the centrally disposed eye 3, under the edge 5 forming a valve seat. The member 1 has an external bracket 6, in which a port 7'leads to said member 1, said bracket forming a support for and connection with the overflow tube 8, having a collar 9 seated thereon and the use of which will later be described. A valve stem 10 projects through the valve plate 11., the gasket 12 and gasket plate 13, which are fixed to the stem. The stem projects slidably through the guide ring 3. A loose collar 14 is mounted upon the stem 10 under the cotter pin 15 in the stem and a knee-joint lever member 16, having a bifurcated lower end, which straddles and is pivotally connected to the collar 14. The arm 17 of said member 16 is bent at right angles thereto and extends beyond the member 1 and has a down turned end with an enlarged flattened part 18 thereon, which besides serving as weight, retards sudden and noisy closing of valve when operating against water. A flange 19 is formed on the bellv 20 of the lever 16 to normally bear ling with plate 38.

The upper end of 24 is pivoted to the short end 25 of the lever arm 26 which is fulcrumed on the pin 27 mounted in the bearings 28 formed on said collar 9., Also pivotally connected-with collar 9 is a catch member 29, having a vertically inclined surface -30 directly in the path of the screw thread 31 0 the stem 10, so that when the stem is raised through the operation of rod 32,which raises lever 1. and'collar 14., the latter engaging pin 15 thus raising stem 10 and its valve connections,the said head shoves member 9 out, of its path until head 31 passes the extreme upper end 33 of member 29, whereupon said end 33 drops under head 31 and engages its shoulder 34, and thus holds the stem raised until the receding water level in a'tank permits the float 35 on outer end of lever 26 to fall, thus raising end 25 ot' the lever which engages the lower end 36 of said member 29 and trips it from engagement with steam head 31, thus permitting stem 10 to drop and seat valve 11.

When the stem 10 is dropped through movement of trip; member 29, the collar 14 will not retard its downward movement as the slot 21 permits free play of lever 16, regardless of position of lever 26. The raising of float 35 causes lever 26 to press down on lever 16 and force collar 14 against valve 11, thus firmly binding the valve against its seat.
Because of the pressure the float brings to which I claim to be new and desire to pro- 'its pressure engagement with said valve member before the valve is opened.
2. A flushing tank valve seat, a valve member, pressure means, means communicating said pressure'to said valve member, said communicating means being collapsible for the purpose of suddenly breaking said pressure communication, and means actuating said collapsible means and raising said valve member.
3. In a tank, a valve seat, a valve member, means pressing said valve member to said seat, means effecting release of said pressure means and raising said valve member from said seat after said pressure has been thus released, and means holding said valve member raised, said pressure means tripping said holding means.
4:. In a tank, in combination with a valve seat and a valve member normally seated thereon, of supplementary pressure means, consisting of a float, pressing said valve member. more securely to said seat, and means releasing said supplementary float pressure before the valve is opened.
5. In a flushing tank, an outlet valve seat, a valve member, a pressure actuated lever, a support sustaining the same, a connecting member one end of which connects with the arm of said pressure lever, means connected to said valve member adapted to engage the other end of said connecting member, so as to communicate pressure from said connecting member to said valve member, and means effecting pressure release between said connecting member and said engaging means before the valve is opened.
6 In a closet flushing mechanism a valve seat, a valve member, a pressure actuated lever, a support sustaining the same, 'a' knee joint locking device mounted intermediate between and connected to one arm of said pressure lever and said valve member said which mutual connection is movable toward and away from the line of longitudinal alinement of said links, means checking movement of aforesaid movable connection in one direction, pressure releasing means moving said movable connection away from its aforesaid checking means and past the position of stable longitudinal alincment of the aforesaid links, allowing thereby said locking device virtually to collapse, thus destroying pressure communication preparatory to subsequent opening of valve.
7. In a tank, the outlet valve seat, a valve member, a loose collar mounted thereon in which said valve member is revoluble, and pressure means pressing said valve member to said valve seat through the medium of said loose collar.
8. In a flushing tank, the-outlet 'alve seat with the usual vertical overflow tube, a valve member, a stem upon which said valve member is mounted, a pressure actuated le- -ver pressing against said valve member, a
bracket extending from said overflow tube, supporting aforesaid pressure lever, a pawl pivoted onto said bracket, means raising said valve member. and means on aforesaid stemengaging said pawl, so as to hold said stem raised, said pressure lever actuating said pawl to release said stem.
9. In a tank, a discharge valve seat, an overflow tube, a valve member, a stem upon which said vali e member is firmly mounted,
a fixed bracket extending from the overflow tlibe and a pawl pivoted thereon, means connected with said stem, adapted to engage said pawl when said valve member is raised by suitable means, and a float actuated lever tripping said pawl when the water level recedes at the close of discharge.
