Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed Dec.2ll2,1916.
Application filed February 12, 1916. Serial No. 78,057.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS C. MALTBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cut-Off Mechanism for Machines for Making Artificial Straws, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improved cut-off mechanism for machines for making artificial straws, and it consists in a periodically and positively rotated shaft which carries an eccentric which latter imparts an endwise and lateral movement to a rotary diskcutter at predetermined intervals, the cutter and its shaft being carried by a rocking frame, which the eccentric causes to swing laterally as well as move longitudinally.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1. is a plan view of one end of the machine, showing the cut-off mechanism; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on line 44 of Fig. 1, both of the latter figures looking in the' direction of the arrows; and Fig. 5 is a detail in perspective of the collars 20 and 21 and connected parts.
A, is the bed of the machine, which may be cast in any approved form and size, it.
being adapted to be mounted on suitable legs (notshown). Erected on the bed are brackets 1, 1, where they are held by bolts or other means 2. 2. There are two of these brackets. Arms 3, 3, extend laterally from the bed, and at their upper ends revolubly support the counter-shaft 4; and boxes 5, 5, secured on these arms'support the drivenshaft 6. This driven-shaft 6 carries the eccentric 7 which is keyed thereon. and also it has a pinion 8 keyed on it. This pinion 8 has a predetermined number of teeth, for instance twelve, and is adapted with each periodical movement to make a complete revolution. This is accomplished by the teeth on the mutilated gear-wheel 9, which is keyed on countershaft 4, there being twelve of these teeth occupving a fourth of the peripheral surface of the mutilated gear. so that pinion 8 is given one complete rotation during a fourth of a revolution of wheel 9 and stands still during the remaining three-fourths of its revolution. The coun tershaft 4 is continuously rotated through the large gear 10, the teeth of which mesh with the intermediate wheel 11, and the latter is driven by the pinion 12 on the driveshaft 13.
.Around the eccentric the usual eccentric strap 14 is placed, and this is connected to the bell crank lever 15 by means of the balloint 16, where it is held by the bolts 17, 17, extending through the ends of the strap, one on each side thereof. The long arm of the bell crank lever 15 is pivotally connect ed to a tail-piece 18 rigidly secured to or integral with the web 19 of the two collars 20 and 21. These collars 20 and 21 are secured to the sleeve 22, which insheathes the shaft 23, which carries the disk-cutter 24 and the rod 25 respectively; and as the sleeve 22 is slidably mounted in the collars 26, 26, carried by the upper endof the rocking frame 27, and the straw-tube 28 through cured on the bar 29, as clearly set forth in one of the accompanying concurrently pending applications, it will be seen that the rotation of the eccentric 7 swings the bellcrank lever 15 rapidly back and forth. and in so doing it reciprocates the saw-shaft 23, sleeve 22, straw tube 28, and bar 29, and simultaneously rocks the frame 27 in which the shaft 23 and sleeve 22 are carried, thus causing the parts to move with the'straw, and the saw-disk to move across the path of the latter once during each single rotation of the mutilated gear 9. Shaft 23 is driven by a pulley 33 and a belt 34 passing around the latter to the main drive-shaft or some other source of power (not shown). Thus it will be seen as disk-cutter 24 is secured on one end of the shaft 23 at one end of the sleeve 22. and pulley 33 on the other end of shaft 23 at the opposite end of sleeve 22. that the endwise movement of the sleeve 22 through the bell-crank-lever 15, will cause the shaft 23 carrying the disk cutter 24 to likewise be moved endwise.
I claim:
1. The combination of a bed, a rocking frame mounted thereon, a sleeve connected with said frame. a shaft rotatable in the sleeve and carrying a disk-cutter, a straw:
. movement ofthe disk-cutter;
tube slidably connected with the bed, and
means extending froi'n'thesleeve and slid-.
endwise movable means carried by the frame and extending I laterally therefrom, and. slidably connected with the tube, whereby the frame is capable'yof moving laterally with respect to the straw-tube, and
theendwise movable means carried 'thereb causes the straw-tube to move endwise with the lateral movement of the frame.
. 3. The combination of a bed, a rocking frame, a slidable sleeve, a straw-tube, a bar connected with. .the straw-tube, common meansfor rocking the frame and sliding the sleeve, and means extending from the sleeve laterally and slidably connected with the bar for moving the latter endwise with the lateral movement of the frame and slidable sleeve.
4. The combination with a bed, a rocking frame mounted thereon, a sleeve slidably connected with said frame, a shaft rotatable in the sleeve andfcarrying a disk-cutter, a straw tube slidably connected with the bed, means extending from the rocking frame andslidably connected with the straw tube for moving the latter endwise with the endwise'movement of the disk-cutter, of an intermittently rotated shaft, an eccentric thereon, and means extending from the eccentric to the rocking frame for reciproeating and swinging the latter laterally.
5. The combination with a bed, a rocking frame mounted thereon, a sleeve slidabl connected with said frame, a shaft rotatable in the sleeve and carrying a disk-cutter, a straw tube slidably connected with the bed, means extending from the rocking frame and slidably connected with the straw tube for moving the latter endwise with the endwise movement of the disk-cutter, of a pair of shafts intermittently intergeared, an cecentric carried on one of said shafts, and means extending from the eccentric to the carried by the bar, whereby rocking frame for reciprocating and swinging the latter laterally.
6. The combination with a machine-bed or frame, a main drive-shaft, a countershaft and a driven-shaft carried thereby, 'the countershaft having a mutilated gear thereon, and the driven-shaft a pinion and an eccentric, of a rocking frame and sleeve carried thereby, a shaft rotatable in said sleeve and carrying a disk-cutter, a slidable straw tube, and means carried by the sleeve slidably connected with the straw tube for moving the latter endwise, an eccentric strap on the eccentric, and a bell crank lever operated by the eccentric strap and connected with the means carried by the sleeve for reeiproeating the sleeve, the shaft therein, and the straw tube, and for simultaneously rocking the rocking frame and with it the tube and shaft therein.
7. The combination with a machine bed,
counterand driven-shafts, one having a gear and the other a pinion which .meshes w1th the mutilated mutilated gear, whereby the shaft having the pinion is given an intermittent rotary motion, an eccentric sceured on the driven shaft, an eccentric shaft,
and a bell-crank lever connected to the eccentric, of a rocking-frame, a sleeve carried thereby, a shaft rotatable in the sleeve and carrying a disk-cutter, a collar secured to the sleeve and to which the bell-crank lever is pivotally connected, a guide-plate carried bythe collar, brackets secured to the bed, a bar slidably connected with the brackets, a sleeve secured thereto and carrying antifriction rollers between which the guideplate on the collar slides, and a straw tube with the periodical rotation of the driven-shaft, the bellcrank lever is oscillated, and with it the sleeve and shaft carrying the disk-cutter as well as the straw tube are reciprocated, and the saw-shaft and sleeve are oscillated,
whereby the saw passes into and out of the path of the straw straw-guide.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
