Description

R. L.' EDWARDS.
SACK BALER.
APPLl'cATloN man Nov.1o, 19|5.
eac-enna,
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec.. f2, llwlld.
Application filed November 10, 1915. aerial Ito. 60,661.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT L. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Asher, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Sack- Balers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is'an improvement insack balers, and the invention has for its object 'to provide a device of the character specicross bars 3 at the tops of the uprights, the
longitudinal bars 2 being extended beyond the uprights l at each end, and the extended ends of the bars 2 are rabbeted to receive the cross bars 3 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The uprights are braced against the bars 2 by inclined braces fl. The top of the frame is open except for a transverse plate or table 5, and the said plate is arranged nearer one end than the other and at the lower edges of the bars 2.
A series of Hexible members 6 is connected with that end of the frame adjacent to the plate 5, and the free end of each of the said` Flach of the members of the series 10 connected at one end to the shaft, and 1s arranged to wind thereon, and the outer end of each of the said members is provlded with a ring 11. rllhe members of the series 10 cor- -respond in number and arrangement with the members of the series 6 and they are spaced apart from each other at the same distance as the members 6 are spaced apart, and the hook of each of the members 6 is adapted to engage the ring 11 of the adjacent member 10.
lt will be noticed from an inspection of Figs. 2 and 3, that each member 6-is connected to an eye 12 on the adjacent cross bar 3, and means is provided for rotating the 'shaft 8 to wind upl the members 10. 'llhe shaft or roller 8 has its ends extended beyond the longitudinal bars 2, and a collar 13 is adjustably connected with one end of the roller outside of the frame by Vmeans of a set screw 1A. Agear Wheel or ratchet wheel 15 is secured to the other end of the shaft in any suitable manner, and a pawl 17 coperates with the gear or ratchet Wheel to prevent reverse rotation of the shaft or roller. A hand wheel 18 is secured to the shaft outslde of the gear or ratchet wheel, and by means of the hand wheel the shaft may be turned.
The bags or sacks 26 to be baled are arranged one upon the other on the plate 5, but before the bags are placed on the plat/e or table 5, the flexible members 6 and 10 are arranged as shown in Fig. 2. Fach of the flexible members 6'is laid across the upper face of the plate 5 with the hook 7 depending on the opposite side of the plate from the eye l2 of the flexible member. The Hexible members 10 are arranged transversely of the plate with the rings 11, depending on the opposite side of the plate from the shaft or roller 8. The bags are now laid on the exible members as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the depending ends of the flexible members' are brought up over the pile of bags and the hook 'E' of each Hexible member 6 is en aged with the ring ll of the adjacent flexib e member 10. The wheel 16 is now turned in a direction to wind up the flexible membersl 10 on the roller'8, and as -the tension on the dexible members increases the bundle of bags will take the cylindrical formshown in Fig. 3, and the bags will be tightly compressed into a bale. After the bags have been suitably compressed the pawl 19 prevents reverse rotation of the roller, holding the bundle of'bags in compact form until the bale may be secured in the position shown by means of tie ropes, cords, wires, or the like. VAfter the bundle or bale has been tied 'the pawl 17 is released, and the shaft 8 is rotated reversely sucient to permit the disengagement of the hooks from the ring. The flexible members are now the connection of the ends of the flexible members 6 and 10, when the bale is compressed as shown in Fig. 3, it will be lifted o' the plate 5, so that the placing of the binding cords is facilitated.-
I claim: K c
A sack baler, comprising a frame, a series of flexible members secured at one end to one side of the frame, a roller journaled at the opposite side, a series of flexible members secured at one end to the roller and Winding thereon, a supportin plate for the sacks to be baled arranged etween the roller and the opposite side of the frame and spaced apart from the roller and from the said opposite side of the frame, the flexible ened.
