To all whom t may concern.' A
Be it known that l, li/lA'rTHEw Vrnnmvsnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brook'- lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and lin-- proved Method of Manufacturing Envelops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates more specifically to the manufacture of what is known as claspfastening envelops.
rilhe invention consists in cutting a con-- 'tinuous paper blank in a manner to provide in the final product, gummed seams at the edges thereof; in moving the continuous blank past an operating station where a. reinforcing member is added thereto prior to severing the sections' of the blank which form the ultimate product; in delivering metal clasping members to the blank prior to the severance of the sections thereof for attachment thereto and to the reinforcing member thereof; in punching an orilice in the blank and in the reinforcing section thereof for registry with a clasp previously mounted in the blank; and in gun'nning, severing, and folding each section to form a completed envelop, the flap whereof is Shaped to register the orifice therein with the clasp in the body of the envelop.
DWarnings.--Figure 1 is a view showing in perspective the blank from which the envelop is construetedin accordance with the herein described method, and the completed article or envelopresulting from the performance of the said method; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modified form of blank and product resulting therefrom; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a further modiication of the form of the blank and the product resulting therefrom; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of an envelop constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, the section being taken as on the median line of the'envelop and through the clasp and the reinforcing member thereof, the section being taken as on the line 114-4 in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same, the section being taken as on the line 5-5 in Fig. 1; Fig. is a longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, of a modified form of the invention as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the section being taken as on the line 6 6 in Fig. 2;. Fig. 7 is a transverse section, on an. enlarged scale,

of the form shown in Fig. 3, the section being taken as on the liney 7 7 in Fig. 3; Fig.
8 is a longitudinal section of the same, the section being taken as on the line 8 8 in Fig. 3.
Descrip101i.-Heretofore envelops having metal clasps for fastening the same have been provided with large extensions overlapping at the center to form a double thick` ness for supporting said clasps in the service location thereof. The double seam ,thus formed at the center of the envelop has proved objectionable as it has necessitated the insertion ofa tip within the envelop for mounting er securing the metal clasp, an operation necessarily performed after the gumming of the lapped extensions referred to. A further objection incident to the former envelope has been that it necessitated .the double handling of the envelop in manufacture, first, constructing the saine, and, second, applying the metal clasp thereto. These objections have been overcome by the method set forth herein.
Tie preferred form of envelop is that shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, wherein a full-sided face 12 is ultimately attached to narrow side sea-ming edges 13, to which it is secured by gumined edges 14 with which said face is provided, while the envelop is in the form of a blank 15. The blank 15 is cut from a continuous sheet to form a series of envelope, each having a back member 16, having seaming edges 13, a face member 12, and a flap member 1'?. The lia-p members 17 are, in the blank, partially severed from the face member 12 of the adj aeent envelop, by cuts 18. Vhen the blanks have been cut, the gum is applied to 'the edges 14. and to an area 19 extending over the flap members 1T i and the face member 12 of the enve'lop blank adjoining. The gum may be applied to the area 19 in advanceof the application to the edges 14. It is preferred', however, to
apply the gum to both sinniltaneously. The
sists in punching an orifice 21 in the reinforcing strip 20 and flap member 17, simultaneously therewith overturning the clip ends 22 of one of the clips 23 on the adjoining blank. At the moment of punching the lstrips 20 and the Hap member 17, and overturning the ends 22, the blank is disposed so that theportion of ,the reinforcing strip f sive envelops from the blank.
shown best in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings,v
extends at both sides of the line of severance for the blank, which partslthe succes- VVhen, as
the face 12 is overturned on the edges 13, the clip 23 carried by the face 12, 1s laid over the back member 16 in position to register 'With the orifice 2l in the strip 20 when the blank 17 is overturned thereon.
It will be observed that whenl envelops are constructed and arranged in accordance with the above described method, the portion of the envelop permanently holding the clip 23, is reinforced by a portion of the strip 20.
' It will also be observed that a portion of the said strip reinforces the material of the flap lmember 17 wherein is formed the orifice 21.
' Thus the two restraining members for holding the envelop closed, are both reinforced, while the appearance of the envelop is preserved as a full-faced article, no unsightly seam appearing in the face of said envelop.
As shown best in Figs. 5 and 7, the
i prongs 24 of the clips 23 extend upward through the orifice 21 when the Hap member 17 is closed on the face 12 and overturned to prevent thel separation of said flap and face. As shown-best in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the clips 23 are delivered in position for attachment to the envelop blank as a .continuous strip, the prongs 24 of the blank beingmutually connected, while the ends 22 areextended laterally in the same plane .with thesaid'prongs until just prior to arriving at position to be driven upward through the face 12 and strip 20, when the said ends are upset as shown in the drawings.
Modification-1n Fig. 3 of the drawings, a modified form of blank is shown, wherein each back member 16 has at one side one of the seaming edges 13, while at theY opposite side a longer extension forms an envelop 4face 25, the edge of which overlies the edge 13 to which it is secured by a gummed strip 26. Alsothe blank is modified by providing the back member 1G with a connecting eX- tension 27, to which the fiap 17 is directly attached. The extension 27 is overturned to Vform the bottom edge'of the envelop when i the envelop face 25 is turned thereover. A
further modification in this form of envelop ends 22 are forced and upon which they are overturned..
1n all forms of the invention, the portions of the blank from which the envelops are formed, are severed after `the Vreinforcin g strip 2O and the clips have 'been secured to the portions of the blank to which they pertain.
