Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented initrd.
.application filed .Tuly 21, 19M. Serial No. 852,173.
To 1U/whom t m ay concern Be 1t known that i, HERMAN Lnrnwnnnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the, city of Chicago, county of Cook, and4 State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Airships, ol:I which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in air-ships and especially to sul'iporting planes therefor, and has tor its object the provision oir' a plane for airships of improved construction and operation and especially designed to assist in elevating the ship and steadying the motion of the ship on an even keel, the subject 'matter of the present application beingdisclosed but not claimed in Letters Patent #1,064,232, granted applicant, June 10th, 1913.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
T he invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing formino a part of this specihcation, and in which,
Figure l is a side view of an airship equippcd with a plane embodying?y my invention, and Fig. E2, an end view of the same.
rilhe preferred form oi' construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a supporting plane l which is formed of a frame of any suitable construction and covered by canvas or other suitable material, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. This plane is formed with its longitudinal sides oir-edges depressed and downwardly curved throughout the length thereof, thus forming a plane oiconcavoconvex shape in cross section transversely througgfhn out its entire length. Each of the ends L of the plane 3 is upwardly inclined for a comparatively short distance, but the concavoconvex ttor-m is .retained in these upwardly inclined end portions. By this arrangement of the ends of the planes, the lifting action thereof, when forced through the air in stantially horizontally when either direction is-augmented, and 'the travel of the ship on an even keel facilitated.
A suitable car 5 is suspended from the plane on suitable hangers 6 and suitable 7 are arranged. in a suitable trame 8 which is in turn braced and supported from car 5 and from plane l by means oi" hangers 9. Suitable power developing'ineans is arranged in car 5 and suitable connections are made with propellers 7 for driving the latter. Suitable rudders l() are also provided for steering,I 'the ship in either direction and suitable connections are made for operating these rudders. rlhe means for driving and controlling' the ship constitute the subject matter yot my aforesaid Patent No. 1,064,232 and need no further description here.
While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying' my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit ot the invention. l, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail n iyself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what li claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An airship plane concave-convex in transverse section throughout its length, the lower side being concave the central major portion of said plane beingpositioned sul theship is on an even lieehand both ends thereof beingl upwardly inclined, substantially' as de-` scribed..
ln testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMAN Llllllvlllllllhllit. l/litnesses: i JOSHUA R. H. Porre, Hmmm iflanims.
