To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, NORMAN B. Hum), a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Britain, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Panic-Bolt Holdback, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a hold-back device for latch bolts, the object being to provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensive hold-back construction.
Ordinarily the normal position of the latch bolt is projected. Sometimes it is desirable to have the latch retracted for a period. To that end my invention contemplates providing simple means to hold back the latch for as long a period as desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing my invention as applied to a so-calledpanic-bolt lock. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation relatively enlarged of certain parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the parts in a different position. Fig. t is a section on the line t l, Fig. 2. Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate details.
1 represents a bolt preferably of the ordinary spring latch type.
2 represents a latch bolt operating member pivoted in a bracket 3 mounted on the face of the door. This operating member may be connected with the latch 1 in any well known manner, no invention being claimed in the particular mode of connection between the operating member 2 and said latch bolt 1.
4L is an arm pivotally mounted in a bracket 5. The arm 1 swings with the latch operating member 2, being connected thereto by a cross bar 6. Since the parts 2 and i move together as one piece, I may provide a stop or latch hold-back member in connection with either the bracket 3 or 5. In this particular instance the latch hold-back is connected with the bracket 5 and comprises a barrel 7 which is mounted in the bracket 5 parallel to the pivot P of the arm a. This barrel 7 is notched in one side as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and the hub of the arm 1 projects at all times into said notch to prevent the endwise displacement and accidental disengagement of the barrel from the frame. The hub of the arm 4 likewise has a notch 8 arranged to formv a looking shoulder.

WVhen the arm 4t stands in the position shown in the solid lmes, Figs. 1, 2 and l, the latch 1 is pro- Jected. When, however, the arms 2 and 4 are moved into the position indicated in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines Fig. l, the latch bolt 1 will be retracted. In this latter position the barrel 7 may be turned clockwise so as to cause the shoulder 10 to engage in the notch 8 thus locking the arm 4 in the dotted line position and holding the latch bolt retracted. Any suitable means may be provided for turning the barrel bolt 7, that is to say, the said barrel bolt may have an ordinary knurled end or handle, or a simple spanner wrench 11 may be employed, the end of the barrel being provided with two recesses shown in Fig. 5 to receive such a spanner.
l is a screw or other suitable fastening by which the hub of the arm 4 may be secured on its pivot l 12 is a friction spring which may serve to hold the barrel 7 against accidental displacement when it is performing the locking or hold-back function. Any suitable equivalent means may be substituted for the specific form of spring shown.
It is obvious that a variety of changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a bracket, a retracting member having a hub portion pivoted in the bracket and pro vided with a locking shoulder, a barrel pivoted in the bracket provided With a notch freely receiving the locking shoulder on the hub in the swinging movement of said retracting member and hub and provided with a locking shoulder at one end of the notch therein adapted to be brought by the turning of the barrel into the plane of the locking shoulder on the hub, manually operable means for rotating the barrel to carry the locking shoulder thereon into the plane of the locking shoulder on the hub, said barrel having a notch therein in the side opposite the locking shoulder before described and a holding spring engaged in said notch.
