To all whom it may concern:
lle it known that ll, ANTHONY V. Home, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Polishing Machines; and lldo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the/invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a nail polishing machine.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of nail polishing machines and to provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive nail polishing machine designed for use in manicuring parlors and elsewhere and capable of simultaneously cleaning and polishing the'nails of both hands without injuring the same by the movement of the polishing surfaces longitudinally of the nails and in one direction with respect to the same so as to produce a perfect polish.
A further object of the invention is to provide a nail polishing machine of this character adapted to shape the nails as well as polish the same and capable of enabling cleaning and polishing material to be applied as desired during the operation of the machine.
The invention also has for its object to provide a nail polishing machine capable of polishing and cleaning the nails with great rapidity so that a small motor may be used without danger of heating the same by a relatively long continued use of the motor.
Another object of the invention'is to provide a nail polishing machine equipped with lubricating means adapted to supply a lubricant to the bearings of the various parts of the machine without liability of permitting dust-to enter the bearings. v
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the ad vantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings in which is illustratedthe preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a casing designed to be constructed of hard wood or other suitable material and composed of a bottom 2, rear side walls 3 and front side walls l arranged substantially at right angles to each other and forming a tapered approximately triangular front portion as clearly illustrated in Fig. l fthe drawings, but a casing of any other preferred configuration may of course be employed. The side walls 3 taper rearwardly and are connected by a rear wall 5 forming a truncated rearwardly tapered portion for the accommodation of a motor 6. The casing is provided with a rear top section or wall 7 and a hin ed cover 8 which is hinged to the rear section or wall 7 of the top and which is adapted to be open to permit access to the nail polishing machine. The motor 6 which is a small electric motor is arranged in circuit with a switch 9 and with a cord. 10 designed Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view to be provided with an ordinary plug,- not shown for enabling the nail polishing machine to be connected with any suitable socket. of an electric supply system but any other suitable motor may of course be employed for operating the nail polishing mechanism, hereinafter described.
The shaft of the motor carries a beveled pinion 11 which meshes with a beveled gear wheel 12 mounted for rotary movement on a fixed shaft or spindle 13 and connected with a, friction gear 14 constructed of rubber or other suitable material and mounted on an annular flange 15 preferably formed integral with the gear wheel 12. The friction wheel or pinion 14 is in frictional contact or engagement with a friction wheel 16 provided with a rib 17 of rubber or other suitable material. This provides a yieldable drive between the motor and the nail polishing mechanism and will effectively prevent injury to the nails of the person being manicured.
The wheel 16 is mounted on a transverse shaft 18 journaled in suitable bearings of spaced posts 19 and carr ing beveled pinions 20 keyed or otherwise xed to the ends of the shaft 18 and meshing with beveled gear wheels 21 of angular-1y disposed shafts 22 and 23 which carry the rotary horizontally disposed polishing elements 24. The shafts 22 and 23 are journaled in suitable bearings 25 and the shaft 22 is provided with an extension 26 having a beveled pinion 27 which meshes with a beveled pinion 28 of a vertically disposed rotary polishing element 29 for cleaning and polishing the nails of the thumbs.
The rotary polishing element 29 is mounted on a fixed vertical shaft 30 and rotates at the same speed as the horizontally disposed polishing elements 24 and in practice .the rotary polishing elements which are in the form of rolls in the accompanying drawings will rotate approximately five revolutions to the second but the gearing may be arranged in any suitable manner for rotating the cleaning and polishing rollsat any desired speed. Each of the horizontally disposed cleaning and polishing elements 24 consists of a roller constructed of wood or other suitable material and provided with four annular grooves 31 which present concaved surfaces that conform generally to the configuration of the nails of the fingers. Each of the horizontally disposed cleaning and polishing rolls is provided with a soft flexible covering composed of two separate plies or covers 33 of chamois or other suitable material which closely conforms to the configuration of the rotary cleaning and polishing roll and which are securely re-,
tained thereon by means of end plates or heads 34, which are secured by screws or other suitable fastening devices to the ends of the polishing roll. A plurality of flexible covering is employed to provide a soft yielding surface and in practice the outer one is designed to be re laced as it becomes worn. The vertically isposed thumb nail polishing roll is constructed substantially the same as the horizontal finger nail pol- 1sh1ng roll and it is provided with an annular groove 35 and is covered with chamois 36 or other suitable flexible material which s secured on the vertical thumb nail polishmg roll by means of upper and lower plates or heads 37.
When the motor is started rotary motion is communicated to the horizontal and vertically disposed nail cleaning and polishing rolls which are arranged to clean and polish simultaneously the nails of both hands The thumb nail polishing roll is located above the plane of the horizontal finger nail polishing rolls and is in position to operate on the nails of both thumbs when the nails of the fingers are placed above and in contact with the horizontal polishing rolls 24. The front side walls 4 are cut away at 38 to afford convenient access to the horizontal nail polishing rolls which are arranged in spaced relation with the front side walls 4 and in parallelism with the same.
In practice, a :polishing cream is first applied to the nails after the same have been trimmed and filed and after being operated on by the rotary polishing roll the nails are cleaned and polished by suitable cleaning and polishing material which is a plied to the polishing rolls by means of locks 39 and 40. A series of the blocks 39 is arranged at each of the horizontal nail olishing rolls 24 and a single block 40 is ocated at the outer side of the vertical polishing roll. The blocks are constructed of suitable material preferably what is known as nail block but any suitable cleaning and polishing material may of course be employed. The series of blocks 39 which are located at each of the horizontal polishing rolls 24 is located in the space between the roll and the adjacent front side 4 of the casing and the said blocks are mounted on approximately vertical arms 41 extending upwardly from a horizontally disposed rock shaft 42 journaled in suitable bearings and connected with operating mechanism which is adapted to swing the arms inwardly and outwardly to carry the polishin material to and from the rotary roll 24. ach block is provided with a backing 43 of fabric or other suitable material having a loop 44 through which the arm to which the block is connected extends. The rock shafts 42 are provided at their adjacent ends with inwardly projecting operating arms 45 normally arranged at an inclination and connected by cords 46 or other suitable flexible connections with a shaft 47. The cords 46 neonate extend through suitable guides 48 and l9 and the shaft 427 is adapted to be rotated to swing the inclined arms downwardly to carry the vertically disposed arms inwardly. The block 40 which is located at the outer side of the'vertical polishing roll is arranged in a suitable casing or housing 5d and it is connected with a vertically disposed arm 5l pivoted at its lower end and connected with an inclined operating arm 52 and the latter is connected with one end of a flexible connection 53 extending through the guides 48 and ll) and having its other end connected to the shaft ll. The shaft d7 may have the flexible connections 4&6 and 53 secured to it in any desired manner and it is adapted to he rotated to wind simultaneously the inner portions of the said flexible connections. The device is provided with a lulorica tor consisting of an oil cup fill a main tuhe til extending from and communicating with the oil cup and provided with loranches 6E2 connecting the various hearings with the main supply pipe or tube til. The hearings are located below the level oil the liquid within the oil cup so that there will he a gravity feed of the lubricant to the hearings and in practice cotton waste or other suit able material will be arranged in both the oil cups and the hearings to assist in exclude ing dust and dirt. The bottom oil the hex or casing is provided at the front helow the polishing rollers with openings 63 for the escape of dust and dirt to prevent the powder resulting from the consumption of the polishing and cleanin mulating within the ox or casing, The hinged lid or cover 8 is rovided with depending extensions 64: which fill the recesses 38 when the lid or cover is closed so as to completely close the box or casing.
What is claimed is l. A nail polishing machine including a pair of angularly related horizontally disposed rotary nail polishing elements arranged to operate simultaneously on the linger nails of both hands simultaneously and a superimposed vertically disposed rotary polishin' element arranged to 0perate on the t umh nails simultaneously with the said polishing elements.
