a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Berrien and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Generators, of which the following .is a specification.
This invention relates to gas generators and particularly to a type of generator that may be used upon motor vehicles, for supplying gas to the lamp thereof for. illuminating purposes and to one in which only a sufficient amount of gas is generated from each charge of carbid inserted therein to last for a predetermined period of time.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a generator of this type in which the water reservoir serves as a closing cap for the gas storage tank and one in which means is provided for supporting a carbid receptacle beneath the water reservoir in such a manner as to enable convenient access to be had to both the carbid holder and the storage tank for recharging or cleaning purposes.
A. further object of the invention is to support the carbid holder beneath the water reservoir in such a manner as to render the carbid holder or receptacle detachable therefrom when it is desired to substitute similar carbid holders of diiferent capacities and to support said holder in such a manner as to prevent its accidental disengagement from the water reservoir, when attached thereto.
The invention consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but no restriction is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein shown, as changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.

. The numeral 1 designates a tank having an upstanding threaded flange or neck 2 adapted to provide an entrance opening within the receptacle or tank 1 vas designated at 3. Suspended within the filling opening 3 by means of a flanged top 4 which is threaded as at 5 to engage with the thread upon the neck 2 of the receptacle 1, is a water reservoir 6, whose bottom 7 is perforated as at 8 and provided with a centrally disposed threaded aperture 9, forming a filling opening therein normally closed by the threaded end of a bar 10, said bar being provided intermediate its ends with a pin 11, whose ends 12 extend laterally from opposite sides of the bar 10.
Disposed below the water reservoir 6 which is provided in its peripheral wall with an opening 6' is a carbid holder or re ceptacle 13 whose bottom 14 is provided with openings 15 said openings being covered by Wire gauze 16 to permit the escape or" gas from the bottom of the receptacle 13. Extending upwardly and axially of the receptacle 13 is a tube 17 whose upper end is forked as at 18 to provide a pair of arms 19, said arms being slotted and notched as at 20 to provide hooks 21, adapted for engagement with the ends 12 of the pin 11 in the bar 10, and thereby effectually support the carbid holder 13 beneath the water reservoir 6. Extending laterally from the tube 17 are braces 22 each having an end secured to the wall of the carbid holder.
Disposed within the tube 17 and extending between the bar 10 and the bottom 14 of the carbid holder is a coiled spring 23 adapted to hold the hooks 21 in engagement with the ends 12 of the pin 11 and thereby prevent accidental displacement of the carbid holder, from beneath the water reservoir 6, when engaged therewith.
Mounted within the top of the tank 1 is a valve 24 to permit the passage of the gas contained within the tank 1 to the headlight upon the vehicle.
When it is desired to use the generator, the water reservoir and carbid holder are withdrawn from the tank 1. The carbid holder 13 is now disconnected from the bar 10 and said bar removed from the filling opening in the water reservoir. The water reservoir is now partially filled with water through the opening 9 and the threaded end 'within the holder 13 and' the water reservoir 'filled with only enough water to generate of theb ar inserted in said opening to close the same. Thecarbid holder may now be filled with carbid and connected with the I the carbid holder to generate gas.
It will, of course, be understood that only a suflicient quantity of carbid is placed enough .gas' to fill the tank to its maximum capacity so that any danger of the tank exploding is obviated. 3
WVhen the tank 1 hasbecome filled with gas, the valve 2% may be opened and the gas usedas desired until the tank has been emptied at which time thegenerator may be re-charged'as described above.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it may be seen that a gas generator has been 1 provided in which thewater reservoir serves as a cap for closing the entrance opening to ,the tank l-and one in which the carbid conture and highly efficient in use.

1. A gas generator comprising a tank restricted near one end to provide an upstanding flange forming a neck, a water reservoir removably connected with'said flange and having a centrally arranged opening in the bottom thereof, a bar having an end removably mounted in said opening, a pin extending transversely of said bar between its ends, a carbid holder having an axially arranged sleeve receiving said rod, and arms on said sleeve engaging said pin.
2. A gas generator comprising a tank restricted near one end to provide an upstanding flange forming a neck, a water reservoir'supported by said flange and having arounded bottom provided with a centrally arranged opening therein, a rod having. an end 'threadedly mounted in said open-- ing, a-pin extending transversely of said rod between its ends, a carbid holder having an axially arranged sleeve therein receiving said rod, said sleeve being recessed to form arms engaging said pin, and an expansion spring disposed in said sleeve and arranged between the other end of said rod and the bottom ofthe carbid holder.
The combination with a gas generator having a water reservoir, of a rod for connection with the bottom of the water reservoir and to extend below the same, a pin carried by the rod and having ends extending beyond the sides thereof, a cylindrical carbid holder having an open end and provided with an axially arranged sleeve receiving said rod, an expansion spring disposed in said sleeve and arranged between an end on said rod and the bottom of the carbid holder, and arms on said sleeve slotted to provide hooks engageable with the extending ends on the pin.
