To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FITZHUGH L. BRooKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moflitt, in the county of Randolph and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Starting-Cranks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for starting-cranks for automobiles by means of which the starting crank may be held in a position to have the handle portion arranged in its uppermost position so as to prevent foreign matter from being thrown upon the handle which is very disagreeable when the motor of the automobile is being started.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the class specified of simple construction and of such outline as to readily accommodate the well-known form of starting cranks now in use.
An object of the invention is to provide a device having the dual capacity of olding the crank in an upright position forming a bearing for the crank and holding the ratchet portion of the starting crank out of engagement with the cooperatlng element of the engine. Another object of the invention is the manner of mounting the spring so that in the operation of the starting crank the spring will not be subjected to torsional strain.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a portion of an automobile showing my invention applied thereto, the sleeves being shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section through the invention removed from the automobile. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33' of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sleeve.

by means of which the sleeve is supported upon the frame of the automobile. This sleeve 1 slidably receives a portion of the starting crank 3 and abutting one end of the sleeve and having its remaining end secured to the starting crank is a coil spring 4 and at this point attention is called to the fact that by having one end of the spring freely abutting one end of the sleeve and one end of the spring secured to the starting crank, the starting crank is free" to turn within the sleeve without the spring being subjected to torsional strain. That end of the sleeve opposite to the end which abuts the spring is provided with a pair of diametrically opposite teeth or lugs 5 so arranged that when the handle 6 is in its uppermost position the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which is now considered to be the best embodiment thereof I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim.

The combination with an automobile frame having a bearing for the journal portion of an engine starting crank, of an engine starting crank, a clutch member fast on the end of the journal portion of said starting crank, a fixed crank bearing and locking sleeve extending through and fitted tightly in the first named bearing in the frame and having the journal portion of the crank slidable longitudinally therein, a spring on said journal portion acting to yieldingly In testimony whereof I affix my signature hold said clutch member in abutting relation in presence of two witnesses.
