DON A. MCCOY, 01E MILLER, SOUTH DAKOTA.
COMBINED WEED-EXTRACTOR AND LAWN-RAKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5., 19116.
Application filed February 15, 1916. Serial No. 78,513.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DON A. MCCOY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miller, in the county of Hand and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined feed-Extractors and Lawn-Rakes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to raking implements, more particularly to devices of this character adapted for the removal of dandelions and other weeds from lawns, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which may be inexpensively manufactured, is compact in construction, and which may be employed in otherwise inaccessible localities.
With these and other objects in view, which readily appears as the nature of the invention is'better understood, the same consists in the improved construction'and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereafter fully described and particularly claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved implement; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Corresponding and like parts'are referred to in the following description and indicated inall the views of the drawings by the same reference characters. 1
The body portion of the improved device is constructed from a single plate of metal,
preferably steel, and curved transversely and including a central imperforate bodyportion 10 having teeth 11 in its longitudinal edges and with an integral extension 12,
at one end, the extension being of less width than the body portion 10 with its sides extending in parallel relation and the outer end sharpened, as represented at 13. A handle 14 is connected to the body 10 centrally thereof, both longitudinally and transversely. The handle is riveted or otherwise secured, as shown at 16, to the body 10 and issupported by suitable braces 15, as shown. By this means the extension 12 extends in longitudinal alinement with the body 10 and likewise 'in the same plane as the handle 14. By this arrangement of parts it will be obvious that an efficient implement is produced which may be employed as a rake, or to gather the grass, weeds or other material, and likewise employed for digging out dandelion roots and other noxious growth by employing the cutting member 213 for the purpose. By arranging the cutting projection 12 in alinement with the longitudinal center of the body 10 and like wise in the same plane as the handle 14:, the full strength of the head 10 and the handle 14 is utilized to support the cutting action of the member 12, so that no lateral strains occur between the parts.
The body 10, together with the teeth 11 and projection 12 will be struck up from a single sheet of metal, preferably steel, and
the body portion curved by submitting the same to the action of a suitable bending or pressing mechanism.
The improved implement is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and is strong and durable, and operates effectually for the purposes described.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is An implement of the class described comprising an elongated body portion concaved transversely and having teeth in its longitudinal edges and with a projection extending in alinement with the longitudinal axis of the body and of less width than the body, the side edges of the projection extending in parallel relation and with the outer end sharpened, and a handle extending from the body, the center line of the cutting extension.
being in alinement with the longitudinal axial alinement of the body and of the handle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
