To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER D. GRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Toilets and Urinals, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in urinals and toilets and consists especially in the combination with the bowl, of means for containing deodorants and disinfectants in a solid form and so located in the path of the moving wash water that solutions will be formed which are delivered through suitable connections to the bowl and other parts of the apparatus.

It also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a urinal. Fi g. 2 is a front view of a portion of the upper part of the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a view showing a separate container for the deodorant salt and its location with reference to the water in that pipe.

In the present instance I have shown the form of my apparatus adapted for urinals, but it will be understood that with slight modifications it is suitable for other purposes.

In the drawings, A is a concave bowl of a urinal, which has a depressed chamber 2 at the bottom. In the rear wall of the apparatus or contiguous thereto is a passage, the end of which dips into the depression 2, as shown at 3. The outlet from the bowl is shown at A and is sufficiently above the depression 2 to maintain a portion of the wash water in the depression.

5 is the water inlet pipe opening into the top of a chamber 6 which serves as a container for a disinfectant compound, indicated at 7. This chamber is of such shape that the water discharged from the inlet pipe 5 will be delivered into and through the dis infectant, which, being soluble, will impregnate this water and the water thus impregnated will flow down through the passage 3 directly into the depression 2.

In order to fully wash and deodorize the bowl, I employ a deodorant which may be placed either in the container 6, which may be provided with a separating diaphragm to maintain the two materials separate from each other, or it may be arranged, as shown in Fig. 3, in the form of a chamber 8 having perforations 9 into which the flushing water may flow on its passage through the supply pipe 5 and the intermediate enlargement 10. The deodorant being easily soluble in the water the solution will flow out through the passages 11 of the container and thence will be delivered into the bowl A. This may be effected in various ways, and in the present case I have shown discharge pipes 12 which connect with the chamber below the inlet and a solution flowing out through these pipes is delivered into the upper part of the bowl A, thence flowing down over the surface and settling in the depression 2 from which, as the contents increase, it will flow out through the discharge passage 1.

When used as here shown, in conjunction with a disinfectant, the latter will form a solution, the first portion of which will flow through a passage or passages 13 and over the rear wall of the urinal. As the flushing water gradually ceases to flow, the remaining portion of the solution will pass down through the passage 3 and be delivered into the depression 2 where it remains and performs its office.

It will be understood that various modifications may be made of this device, the 0bj ect in any event being to place a disinfectant or deodorant in a container so located, with regard to the incoming flush water, that the water will dissolve the contents of the container and deliver it through suitable passages into the bowl and the depression 2.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device of the character described, a bowl, a disinfectant chamber arranged at the top of the bowl to hold a disinfectant directly in the path of the inflowing water and provided in its front wall with a refilling opening, an inlet for the bowl leading into the top of the chamber, an outlet provided in the bottom portion of the bowl, a passage leading from the chamber to conduct away the liquid not passing through the disinfectant for flushing the bowl, a drain passage leading from the bottom of the chamber to conduct the disinfectant in solution to the bottom of the bowl, the inlet and drain passage being arranged so that the inflowing water must pass through the disinfectant in the chamber prior to flowing into the drain bowl having a rear wall, a disinfectant passage and a removable closure for the refilling opening of the'bowl;

chamber provided at the. upper edge of the rear wall of the bowl, an inlet for the chamber, said bowl having discharge passages leading from the opposite sides of the chamber and extending about the forward edge of said bowl, a wall of said disinfectant chamber having a series of passages leading from the interior of the chamber and directed toward the exterior surface of the rear wall of said bowl, a disinfectant-conducting passage in the rear Wall of the bowl leading from a the chamber, the bottom of said bowl bein formed with a depression and the rear wall of the bowl having an outlet opening spaced upwardly from the depression, and a nipple I-I.
