PULLEY-BLOCK AND CONNECTION FOR DIPPER-IBUCKETS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLrsoN EDWARD VAN- DERHOEF, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Ruth, in the county of White Pine and State of Nevada, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulley-Blocks and Connections for Dipper-Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pulley blbcks such as are used upon the bails of dipper buckets, and has for its object to.-prevent and eliminate those twisting strains and stresses as ordinarily experienced upon dipper sticks, tending to distort and fracture the dipper stick and to spread the sides of the boom.
A further object is to so design the pulley block that the dipper will be steadied durout departing from the spirit thereof.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a dipper and a portion of its supporting boom, the bail of the dipper bucket'bein provided with a pulley block embodying the characteristic features of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the connection between the dipper bail and pulley block.
Referring specifically to the several views, the dipper stick 10, moves between the sides 10 of the boom, and carries at its outer and free extremity, the usual type of dipper bucket 11, the same including a bail 12 which is pivoted thereto.
In order to prevent the pulley block 13 from movement in a lateral direction, and, in order to provide an improved securement between the same and the haii, ll provide spaced blocks He itt upon each side, of the bail. Extending across the spaced blocks lair-14:, are suitable cover plates which are held thereto by rivets 16. A yoke 19 is provided with an opening or bore 22 extending through the head thereof, which receives an attaching pin 23 therethrough, and effects a strictly pivotal connection therewith. The attaching pin 23 is carried by the pulley block 13, which latter, is formed with the sides 27 and the upper attaching pin 24;. Tlielower extremities of the yoke extend through the openings defined between the bail, spaced blocks 141 l and the cover plates, and are held against detachment therefrom by the abutment blocks 20. The securement between the pulley block and bail ,prevents the pulley block from movement in a lateral direction, and, other than a slight reciprocation, is limited to strictly pivotal motion. The pulley block may be removed by removing the cover plates 15, after the rivets16 have been first withdrawn.
The manner in which the pulley frame is mounted, that is, the limiting thereof to a strict pivotal motion in the plane including the boom and dipper stick 10, prevents an application of side or transverse stresses from being applied upon the dipper stick, which, with the ordinary loose type of connection between the pulley block and dipper bail, whereby the block may swing from side to side, often results in the distortion and actual breakage of the dipper stick and spreading of the sides of the dipper boom. Furthermore, the mounting of the pulley frame holds it in the plane of the dipper stick and dipper boom, so that the hoisting chain 15 also remains in the said plane, all of which steadies the dipper in its movement as it swings from side to side with the boom.
What 1 claim is i 1. An apparatus of the class described, comprising a dipper bail and a pulley block with a cylindrical attaching pin, a pair of spaced blocks located on each side of said bail, a cover plate connecting each pair of blocks and extending across the space therebetween, and a, [Ll-shape yoke with a cylindrical opening at its closed end pivotally receiving the attaching pin of the pulley block thercthrough, the arms of said yoke means at the endsof said arms and projecting therefrom, preventing the yoke from becoming Withdrawn from said openings.
2. An apparatus of the class described,
comprising a dipper bail and a pulley block With a cylindrical attaching pin, a pair of spaced blocks located on each side of said bail, a cover plate connecting each pair of blocks and extending across the space therebetween, and a U-shape yoke with a cylindrical opening at its closed end pivotally receiving the, attaching pin of'the pulley block thereth'rough; the arms of said yoke projecting through the openings defined by the ELLISON EDWARD VANDERHOEF.
