Specification of Letters Patent. p jmm m 5, 1pm
original application filed hecember 6, 39th, Serial 110. 65.1590. Divided. and thisapplication filed May 10,
i 1916. Serial No. 96,476.
of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slot-Closing Devices for Coin-Controlled Machines, of
which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to an improved de vice for closing slots in machines that are actuated by coins or checks, and principally in machines for vending articles. v
In order to prevent the insertion of coins after the supply of articlm is exhausted, de
vices are in use that close the slot, and this' c invention is an improvement in this l1ne of device, being positive in its action, simple in construction and be ng protected agalnst premature opcratlon, that is the last of the articles to be vended or dispensed must bev ejected from the goods-chute before the device operates. The device also embodies an improved device for insuring the feeding of all the ait icles. since a follower that operates the trip' for the closing device is weighted suiiiciently so as to keep the articles that are to be fed from the bottom of the chute in contact and to also insure their gravitation so that they do not stick in the chute.
The device is illustrated as used in con'- A junction with a goods-chute such as 1s'de-' scribed and illustrated in my application for Letters Patent tiled December 6, 1915, Serial No. 65,190,0t which this application is a division.
The inventionis illustrated in the accoin panying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view or a goods chute equipped with my slot closing device. i Fig.
2 is a side view oi? the chute shown in Fig. 1, and also having a part oi the casing shown in section. Fig. .3 is 'a'perspective view of the plate that is utilized to close the slot, and Fig. i is a perspective of the follower that rests on the goods and which actuates the tripping mechanism to release the plate which closes the slot.
in the drawing the form of goods-chute 10 is similar to the one illustrated in the application mentioned hereinbeio're, and has its front wall It]. cut away as at 12, leaving side-strips 13 so that the open space 12 can plate 30. The plate 30 is cut away as at 32, the side placing of the'packages in the chute, the
packages resting on an ejecting and supportmg plate 15 extending forward from a lever 16 which'is operated by any desired .form of mechanism, such mechanism not being shown in the" drawing. The ejecting plate 151s used to expel the packages one at a time so that they pass out, when expelled, onto the tray 17 and out through a suitable delivery opening 18 in the casing 19. The i 'r'ont wall of the casing 19 has a coin slot 20 in itthrough which the coins are inserted and .from which theyare conducted to any suitable operating mechanism. The side 'strips'13 of the chute are connected at the bottom by a transfer strip 21 into which is screwed a. screw 22 or other suitable pivot for the l0w'er1arm 23 of the right-angled lever 24, this loweror horizontal arm hav-. ing an extension .25 which preferably eX- tends slightly into the space between the side strips 13-. The upright arm 26 of the right-angled lever 24: is provided with a pin The. pin 27 normally rests in a hole 28 in the flange 29 of the closing plate 30. The closing plate 30 extends across the front of the goods-chute and is adapted .to swing in a pivot 31, the form shown being a screw which is not screwed in untilit binds but allows space for the free swinging of the walls of the cut-away part or slot 32 being preferably beveled as at.83 s0-as to facilitate the installation of the plate 30, since it is desirable to remove this plate 30 to make it easier to put the packages 14: into the chute. .The plate 30 thus being pivoted or supported at one end so that it can swing on this end, drops by gravity when it is released. lit is,- however, held against swinging by reason of the pin 27 resting in the hole 28 and acting to hold the plate in the position shown in full lines. in Fig. 1. On
the stack of packages 14: is ajfollower 34E which is of material weight and is preferahly provided with upright flanges 35 and 36,- these not being essential but they are desirable because they prevent undue tilting of the follower and insure its travel directly down inside the chute. The follower is provided with a lip 37 which extends forward and is over the end or eXten-' 'sion of the lever 24. The height of the lip 37 above the bottom of the follower 34 is such that after the last package is ex pelled and-'the follower drops to take its 7 chine.
- plate sticking, and since the weight is all place, the. lip engages the extension 25 and forcesit down. When this end 25.is
forced down it swings the end carrying the pin 27 inward, which releases the plate 30 and the plate 30 swings to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and when so swung it covers the coin slot 20. so that no more coins can be inserted into the ma- The beveled or thinned part 33 underneath the head of the screw 31 provides a narrow edge on which the plate swings so that there is very little likelihood,of the to one side of the pivot, the plate swings quickly into its closing position. v
The device takes up but little room in the machine, being confined for the most part within the lines of the chute, and it is easily and quickly set into its normal position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: p 7
1. A slot closing device comprising a goods-chute adapted to hold articlesto be ejected from the bottom thereof a plate swinging on .the goods'chute, tripping means for supporting the plate in its inoperative v position, and a follower resting on ,the articles in the chute and adapted to actuate the tripping means and to withdraw the supportfrom the plate when the last article is expelled from the chute, the parts being so disposed that when its support is with; drawn the plate swings in front of a slot in the machine.
A slot closing device comprising a goods-chute, the goods-chute being adapted to support articles ejected from the bottom thereof, a right-angled lever mounted on the chute, a pivot for the lever intermediate of the ends of one of its arms, a plate adapted to be supported and tripped by said rightangled lever, and a follower on the goods in the chute and adapted to trip the lever as the last article is expelled from the chute. and to thereby withdraw the support from I the plate.
31A slot closing device comprising a,
' goods-chute having an opening down'the goods ejected from the bottom thereof, a
4. A slot closing device comprising a goods-chute/adapted to contain articles dis pensed from the bottom thereof, the chute having a vertically arranged opening, a follower on the goods, a lip on the follower extending through the opening in the chute. a right-angled lever having a horizontal arm and anupright arm, the horizontal arm being pivoted intermediate of its length, a plate pivoted at one end to the chute, and coacting means on the upright arm and on the plate for supporting the plate in an inoperative position against the action of gravity, the lip of the follower being adapt ed to engage the horizontal arm of the lever to withdraw the support from the plate.
5. A slot closing device comprising a goods-chute adapted to contain articles e ected from the bottom of the chute, the chute having a vertically arranged opening, a follower on the goods with a lip projecting through said opening, a right-angled lever with a horizontal arm and an'upright arm.
the horizontal arm being. pivoted with its end in the path of the lip on the follower.
a pin on the upright arm, and a closing plate pivoted near one end and having a flange on its other end, the flange having an opening to receive the pin of the upright arm and to normally support the plate against the action of gravity.
6. In a slot closing device, a closing plate having an inclined slot near one end, the slot having beveled edges, the free end of the plate having a flange thereon, the flange having an opening therein, a lever having a pin to enter the opening of the plate, a
goods-chute adapted to contain articles eject ed from the, bottom thereof, a follower on the articles in the chute, and means operated by the follower for withdrawing the pin from the opening in the plate, thereby permitting the plate to turn by gravity.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing. I hereto set my hand, this 2nd day of May. 1916.
