lie it known that I, CHARLFs ALAN SAW- ran, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vorcester, in the county of Vorcester and Commonwealth of l\/Iassachu'setts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Round Belting, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The present invention relates to round belting, of the type formed by imparting a spiral twist toa strip of leather or other suitable material. A
The invention resides particularly in the construction by which an improved belting of the above type is obtained. as fully set forth in the following description, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which--4 Figure lis a plan view of a strip of leather or other material suitable for belting of the type illustrated by my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of the same strip, which has had imparted` thereto an initial fold. Fig. 3 is a view of the same folded strip in the process of being'twisted to form the belting of my invention. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the end of strip of belting shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5' Visa perspective view of the end of the-folded strip shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective view', on the section indicated by the line 6-6, Fig. 3, showing the folded strip partially twisted. lIn the manufacture of my improved belting, a strip 1. 'of leather,'or other suitable material, of the proper width, preferably finished or dressed on atleast one surface, is folded lengthwise upony itself to fori'n' a more or less rounded doubled edge 2, the finished surface being outside, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. The edges of the 'two sides 3 and 4 of said fold are thereby brought adjacent one another; the edge 5 of the under side 3 is -preferably rounded or beveledof, as shown in Fig. 5, by removing -a portion of the smooth or finished outside surface of the side 3, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. v Likewise, the edge 6 of the other side 4 of the foldmay be less acutely beveled than the edge 5, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
W'hen the folded strip above described is twisted in a clockwise direction, as shown inFigs. 3 and 6, the side 4 of the fold is disposed inwardly, forming thereby a central core for the belting. The side 3 of the fold constitutes the outer surface of the belting substantially surrounding the core whicl is formed by the other side 4 of the fold, as shown in Figs. 6 and T. The free edge G of the side 4, being coextensive with the free edge 5 of the side 3, becomes interposed, when the folded strip is twisted, between said free edge 5 and the doubled edge 2 of the fold. In consequence of this, the tighter the twist imparted to the fbelting, the more firmly with the edge 6 Qbesqueezed or pinched between the. edge i5 sind the doubled edge 2, thereby receiving the full effect of the twist, and acting as an abutment to keep the edges 2 andl 5 out of contact. The completed belting, therefore, will always present, on its outer surface, the full width of the free edge 6, spirally disposed, and separating the edge 5 from the edge 2, and preventing any. deformation of these edges under an excessively tight twist imparted to the belting The rounding or lieveling of' the free edge 5' provi les a surface which merges substantially int-o the cylindrical contour of the outer surface of the belting, when completely twisted, as clearly shown in Fig. 7;

I claim,
1. As a new article of manufacture, a round twisted belt formed from a strip folded longitudinally upon itself along its center to bring its opposite freeV edges together and subsequently folded and twisted to bring one of its free edges between the doubled edge and the other free edge.

As an article of manufacture, a round twisted belt formed from a strip folded lon- Oitudinally substantially at its center and iwisted to bring its free edges toward its doubled edge, With each of its free edges eX- toward its doubled edge, with said beveled posed. edge outermost 10 3.
