PHOTO-FILM DEVELOPING OR CHANGING BOX.

`Developing or Changing Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in boxes for the changing and development of photographic films wherein the top, bottom and all four sides of the box are all made separable from each other to enable them to be separated in the knock-down form of the box, which is the form in which it is shipped and stored and is usually kept except when in use.

The object is to provide separable joints between said parts which will be proof against the passage of light therethrough, and which will be durable and also inexpensive to manufacture.

I accomplish the above, and other objects which will hereinafter appear, by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention in operative position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of same with the screen for i the eyes of the operator in the flat or knockdown position of said screen. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, with the eye-screen in position for use instead of knocked down, and Fig. a is a horizontal section on the line of Fig. 3 showing the corner slip-joints.

TheA box is preferably formed out of sheet metal, such for example` as sheet iron or steel, which may be appropriately galvanized, painted, enameled or finished in any suitable manner. he bottom 5, of the box is formed out of single piece of metal with the four edges turned up to form a continuous flange 6. The sides of the box fit into this flange with a vertical packing-strip 7 between the flange and said sides and a horizontal packing 8 between the lower edges of the sides and said bottom 5. This packing will preferably be felt or other suitable material which will insure a joint impervious to the passage of all rays of light.

The four sides after being assembled as described are setwithin the flanged inclosure of the bottoni 5, and will preferably be retained by fasteners 11, here shown two-leaf hinges, one leaf of which is j'iermanently secured to the flange 6 and the other to the corresponding side 7 or 9, but the pintle 12 of both hinges is removable for the separation of the hinge and separation of said sides from the bottom.

The sides 7 and 9 have hand-holes 13 for the introduction into the box of the operators hands, as shown in Fig. 1, and these are surrounded by flexible light-

14, 14, contracted at their outer ends by elastic draws 1.5, which stretch to let the hands and arms through and then contract the sleeves closely against the arms to exclude the light. The sleeves are made several inches long to make the exclusion of light more certain and also to afford freedom of movement of the arms in and outof the box required in the film developing or changing operations performed therein. The inner ends of the sleeves are fastened to the box by impingement between the latter and metal rings 16, the rings being secured by screws or bolts 17 to provide for easy removal in the repair of the sleeves.

The side l() is provided with a window 18 which is closed by a colored glass adapted to exclude all light-'rays liable to damage the film, and the four sides of the box, 7 8, 9 and 10, are covered by a lid or top 19, having a depending marginal flange 20 which receives the upper end of the box.

A shutter 27 is hinged inside ot the box opposite to, that is, under the sight-opening and glass 22, and is manipulated by the hands of the operator Within the box. The Window 18 has a curtain 30 fastened to the side 10.

ln the operation ot my device, the lid 19 is removed and the camera to be loaded or unloaded, together with the ilm-box to or from which the iilm is to be transferred, are placed Within and the iid i9 is replaced. Then the operator introduces his hands through the side openings and sleeves, opens the shutter 27 and removes the curtain 30. By the aid of he light entering through the Window 18 the operator can see through the sight opening to perform such operations as are required.

While l have described my invention with more or less minutesness as regards details of construction and arrangement and as being embodied in certain precise forms, l do not desire to be limited thereto unduly or any more than is pointed out in the claims. @n the contrary, l contemplate all proper changes in form, construction, and arrangement, the omission of immaterial elements and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or necessity render expedient.
