VYCKOFF, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Asbury Park, county of Monmouth, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improve- 'ments in Buttons, of which the following is one of which is attached to the article on which the button is to be used, so that when the parts are separated only a comparatively small part of the button remains attached to the cloth t0 interfere with laundrying.
Another object is to provide means for attaching a covering material to the button, S0 that the material may be replaced or changed.
Another object is to provide a button comprising a plurality of parts, each of which may be covered with difierent materials, or which parts may together be co-vered with a single material. Either or both of the parts may be constructed of an ornamental substance, Which may, or may not be covered with an ornamcntal fabric.
Another object is toprovide durable and simple means for holding the parts of the button together, which means also draws together the parts to provide for different thicknesses of covering material clamped betweenthe parts. It is understood that this holding means may be applied to a button comprising merely a member for attaching a button to cloth and an ornamental body member.
Other and further objects and advantages Will appear from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanymg drawings, forming a part of this specificatien, and Will be pointed out in the clanns.
In the drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a Vertical cross-sectional view of a button embodying the preferrcd form of my invention; Fig. 2 is an underside view of the button' shown in Fig. 1, with partsbroken away;- Fig. 3 is' a section through Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlargement of a portion of Fig. 1.
The button herein described for the purpose 0f disclosing my invention comprises a. base member 1, which may be circular or of any desirable form, the lower face of the base 1nember being concave, as shown at 2, and the upper face being provided with a depression 3, which is concentric with the ridge -1 formed in said upper face. A cap member 5, which may have a circular or any other desirable form, is provided in its lower face with a depression (3, which is adapted to accommodate the ridge 1 in the upper face of the base 1nember 1. The lower edge 7 of the cap member 5 may be arranged to fit within the depression 3 of the upper face of the base member 1. The cap me1nber is shown as being covered with covering material 8, which may be of any character, having any color or metallic luster. This covering is stretched over the cap member by means of threads 9. The base member is shown as being provided with a covering 10, which may be of any material, color or metallic luster. Threads 11 may be used to stretch this material across the upper face of the base member, but it is to be understood that they may be dispensed with and tlireads 12 stretch this 1naterial across the lower face thereof.
It will,be seen that, When the cap member is positioned 1ipon the base member, the ridge 4, entering the deprcssion 6, and the edge 7, entering the depression 3, Will cause the covcring materials 8 and 10 to be strctchcd. T0 further stretch the ma terial 10 on the base, a hack-plate or clamp 13 is provided, which fits partly into the concavity 2 of the base member. T his plate 13 is provided with radial slots 14, which give it resiliency.
The 100p 15 is provided for attaching the button to the material on Which it is desired t0 use it. This attaching 100p has seeured to it a shank 1G, WhClb extends throngh the opening in the base member and into the recess 17 in the cap member. The upper end of the shank 16 is sCrewthreaded at 18, and is also provided with diametrically opposite longitudinal slots 19. Radial openings 20 extend from the periphery of the cap into the recess 17, and, positioned in these openings and held therein, as, for example, by the friction between their enter surfaces and the inner surfaces of the openings 20, are lugs 21, preferably formed of durable material, and extending Cil into the recess 17. These lugs have width slightly less than the Width of the slots 19, so that the shank may be inserted into the recess by translatory longitudinal motion, and, when the shank is rotated, the lugs 21 W111 engage with the thrcads thereon and the shank W111 be locked within the recess 17, and, while the shank is being turned, the three members comprising the button, namely, the back-plate, the base and the cap, Will be draWn tightly together. It Will be seen that a clamping or locking device is provided WhiCh W111 permit of the use of different thicknesses of covering material, since the shank may be inserted into the recess unti1 all the parts are in contact, and, upon rotation of the shank, whatever threads are opposite the lugs 21 W111 engage the lugs and the rotation of the shank Will cause the parts to be drawn firmly together. The shank can be held against accidental rotation by friction produced by roughening the parts, or in any manner Which suggests itself to the person skilled in the art.
The clamping plate is provided With crossed depressions 22, Which intersect in the opening through which the shank 16 extends. When the 100p 15 is rotated relativcly to the back-plate, it Will slip into these depressions, due to the resiliency of the plate, and the shank Will be held against rotation relatively to the plate. IVhen the shank is rotated so that the lugs are within the slots 19, all parts of the button, except the shank and the 100p, can be removed from the material to which the button is attached, so that the button W111 not interfere with laundrying.
Any kind of material may be used to cover the diiferent parts of the button, or both the cap and the base be covered together, the stitches 12 alone being used, and the matcrial being stretched by the action of the clamping plate 13; or difterent materials may be used on the cap and base and transparent material placcd over both.
While I have illustrated and described, a particular embodiment of my invention, I do not intend that it shall be limited to the specific details herein set forth, but that it shall include variou s modifications and adaptations which may occnr to those skilled in the art, and that it shall be limited only by the hereunto-appended claims.
What I clai1n and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is the followingz 1. In a button, the combination of a base member, a cap member, a covering for said cap member, the opposing faces of said members having interfitting parts to stretch said covering when said members are pressed to-gether, and means for holding said members together.
2. In a button, the combination of a base me1nber, a cap memher, a covering for one of said members, the opposing faces of said members each having a ridge and a depression, the ridge on one member fitting Within the depression on the other, whereby said covering is stretched when said members are pressed together, and means for holding said members together.
3. In a button, a body member, a back plate, said body member having a recess thcrein, and a locking member coperating with said plate to hold it against the rear face of said body member and adapted to be inserted by longitudinal movernent into said recess, the interior of said recess having means to engage said locking member and hold it in said recess.

In a lontton, a body 1nember, an attaching member, one of said memhers having a closed recess and the other a projection, the walls of said recess and said attaching member having projections and depressions t0 permit the insertion of said projection into said recess by translatory movement and the locking of said parts togcther upon relative rotation.
5. In a bntton, a body memloer, an attaching me1nber, one of said mernbers having a recess and the other a projection, said projection and recess being formed to permit the insertion of said projection into said recess by translatory movement and the looking and drawing together of said parts upon relative rotation.
6. In a button, a body member, an attaching niember, one of said members having a recess and the other a projection, said recess having parts extending from its sides, said projection having portions permitting said projection to be pushed into said recess and engaging said parts upon relative rotation of said mcmber.
7. In a button, a base member, a cap member, a back-plate, a covering for said base member and a covering for said cap member, said cap and base members having means on their opposing faces t0 stretch the covering on said cap member and the co-vering on one face of said base member when said members are forced together, and said back-plate and the other face of said base memher being provided with means to stretch the covering on the other face of said base member. when said plate and base member are forced together, and means for holding said members and said plate together.
8. In a button, a base member, a cap member, a back-plate, a covering for said base member and a covering for said cap morn ber, said cap and base members having their opposing faces provided with means to stretch the covering on said cap member and the covering on one face of said base member when said members are forced together,
and said back-plate beirig positioned to hold the covcring on the other face of said base member when said plate and base member are held together, and means for forcing said members and plate together and holding them positioned.
9. In a button, a base member, a cap member, a back-plate, a covering for said base member and a covering for said cap member, said cap and base members having means on their opposing faces to stretch the covering on said cap member and the covering on said base member When said members are forced together, and means for holding togethcr said members.
10, In a button, a body member having a recess therein and lugs projecting from the walls of said recess, and an attaching member having a threaded and and longitudinal slots extending across said threads, whereby said attaching member may be thmst into said recess and rotated to look said members together.
11. In a button, a body member having a recess therein and lugs projecting from the walls of said recess, an attaching member having a threaded end and longitudinal slots extending across said threads, whereby said attaching member may be thrust into said recess and rotated to look said members together, and nieans to hold said members in relatively rotated position.
12. In a button, a body member having a recess therein and lugs projecting from the walls of said recess and an attaching membe1 having members thereon, said lugs and said mcmbers being arranged to permit said attaching 1ne1nbcr to be inserted into Said recess by substantially translatory motion and to be rotated to engage said lugs with said members to look said attaching member within said recess.
