To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that l, CHARLES L. MEYERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Envelops, of which the following is a specilication.

The object of the invention is to provide an envelop, preferably of transparent mate rial, adapted to contain revenue stamps to be aiiixed to an accompanying document, with means for sealing such envelop and for attaching it to such document, and preferably bearing instructions for affiXing and canceling the stamps, so that stamps in the amount required by law for such document may accompany the latter ready to be aiiiXed thereto.

One of the principal uses of the invention is in connection with the insurance business. It is customary to forward the policy to the assured for acceptance, and if accepted the required stamps must be affixed and can celed; this invention offers a simple means for forwarding the requisite stamps in a sealed container attached to the policy, conveniently presented and ready to be re moved, affixed and canceled, or in case of non-acceptance, to be returned with the policy, uncanceled and still inclosed in the sealed container or envelop.

The invention consists in certain novel features by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described and claimed.

The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show three forms of the invention.

Figure l is a face view of a portion of a document intended to represent an insurance policy, with an envelop of preferred construction attached thereto and containing stamps to be affixed thereon. Fig. 2 is a view of the reverse face of the same envelop. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 8 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4c is a view of the front or outer face of an envelop of modified construction. Fig. 5 is a corresponding view of the rear face. Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 6-6 in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a front view of an envelop showing another modification of the invention. Fig. 8 is a corresponding rear view. Fig. 9 is a section taken on the line 9-9 in Fig. 8.

Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, A is the front of the envelop provided with end flaps D B gummed upon the back C, and having its upper margin or sealing flap D gummed on its inner face as at Z to be moistened and secured upon the front face of the back C which projects beyond the sealing flap D, as at E, to form a flap which has a stripe of gum e on its rear face by which the envelop thus made may be attached to the insurance policy or other document M.

Stamps of denominations to make up the amount required for the policy are inserted within the envelop as indicated at N, the gum Z moistened and the flap D sealed; the gum e is then moistened and the envelop with its contents gummed upon the policy. If the recipient accepts the policy he removes the envelop, breaks the seal D and removes the stamps which are then aiiiXed to the policy and canceled.

Figs. l, 5 and 6 show an envelop similar to the form above described but in this modification the front A1 carrying the end flaps B1 B1 projects beyond the back C1 and its sealing iiap D1 and forms a flap E1 having a stripe of gum el by which the envelop is attached to the policy. In this form the envelop is sealed at d1 and presents a smooth unbroken outer face when attached.

Figs. 7, 8 and 9 show an envelop of common type having a front A2 with end flaps 'B2 B2 gummed to the back C2, and a sealing flap D2 gummed at cl2, all as usual. The rear face receives a stripe of gum e2 along the upper margin, by which the envelop may be attached to the policy after the stamps have been inserted and the envelop sealed.

In all the forms the material is preferably transparent paper so that the stamps may be readily seen and their denominations ascertained without breaking the seal, and

the outer faces of.all the forms preferably bear printed instructions as to afiixing and canceling the stamps.

I claim l. As a new article of manufacture, an envelop comprising a front having a gummed sealing flap, a back extending beyond said sealing iiap and gummed on its rear face, the gummed surfaces being upon opposed faces of the back and flap, and end flaps 0n said front folded and guninied upon said back, all arranged to serve substantally as and for the purposes herein set forth. v
