HENRY B. KOPF, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
FASTENER FOR CEAIES.

Application filed July 12, 1915.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. :KOPF, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fasteners for Crates; and I do hereby declare the follow ing, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a view in perspective of a pineapple crate constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a broken view of the crate in vertical transverse section on the line ab of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a detached view in elevation of one of the anchor-plates for the cover of the crate. Fig. l an edge view of the two anchor-plates. Fig. 5 a broken detail sectional View on an enlarged scale, showing the attachment of the cover of the crate to the body thereof.
My invention relates to an improvement in pineapple crates, the object being to produce a convenient, compact and strong pineapple crate designed with particular reference to enabling it to be opened without mutilation, so that it may be used again and again.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a pineapple crate having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
As herein shown, I employ two sheetmetal anchor-plates 2 perforated as at 3 for their attachment, respectively, to the inner faces of the end-pieces 4 of a hipped cratecover 5. At its lower end each anchor-plate 2 is formed with a pair of prongs 6 offsetting from the plane of the plate as shown in Fig. 1, these prongs being designed to be Specification of Letters Patent.

driven into the upper edges of the upper stiles 7 of the framed ends 8 of an oblong rectangular crate-body 9, whereby the cover 5 of the crate is prevented from endwise and sidewise movement with respect to the body 9 thereof. Each plate 2 is also provided at its lower end with a locking-tongue 11 arranged between the prongs 6 and having a perforation 12 for the reception of screws 13 entered into the centers of the said upper stiles 7 of the ends 8 of the body 9, as shown in Fig. 5. For the reception of the tongues 11, each stile is centrally cut away upon its inner face to form a recess 1 1 which is closed in by a sheet-metal guard-plate 15 secured to the inner face of the stile by screws 16. The said plate 15 is formed with an elongated locking-slot 17 for the reception of the inner end of the screw 18 and compensating for inaccuracies of construction.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing that in applying the cover 5 to the crate-body 9, the tongues 11 are inserted into the recesses 14 after which the screws 13 are introduced for locking the cover to the cratebody, from which the cover may be readily removed without in any way mutilating any part of the crate by simply removing the screws 13. The crate may therefore be used over and over again. For reinforcing the cover 5 and the crate-body 9, they are by preference separately bound with light sheet metal straps 18.
I claim:
An anchor-plate adapted to be applied to the inner faces of the ends of the cover of a pineapple-crate, the said plate being formed at its projecting lower end with lookingprongs, and with a locking-tongue positioned between the said prongs, the said tongue being removably fastened to the ends of the crate-b0dy and the said prongs being driven thereinto.
HENRY B. KOPF.
