PAPER-FEEDING MECHANISM.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK WILLIAM Lnv', a citizen of Austria-Hungary, and a. resident of the city of New York, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Paper-Feeding Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanism adapted to feed a wrapper to a machine which folds the wrapper around an article.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby one wrapper only can be separated from a series and moved into engagement with the wrapper folding mechanism.
A further object is to provide means whereby one coupon can be separated from a series and aided into engagement with mechanism a apted to move it into position to be inclosed by the separated wrapper when it is being folded around an article.
The invention consists of a reciprocating carriage provided with a vertically moving slide having friction surfaces, which engage the upper one of a series of wrappers and move it free from needles forming part of vertically moving plate, which plate causes the needles to penetrate several of the wrappers, whereby they are held in place with the exception of the upper one which is not so securely held.
The invention also consists of means whereby the reciprocating movements of said carriage cause one coupon to be separated from a series and moved to rest on a support, adjacent to the wrapper folding mechanism.
The invention further consists of means whereby movement of an article against the wrapper causes the coupon to be moved from said support to rest between the wrapper and the article, so that as the article and wrapper are moved into the wrapper folding channel, the coupon also will be carried along and inclosed by the wrapper.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing my improved paper feed mechanism as applied to a wrapping machine. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 1lll of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the needle plate. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the paper feed mechanism. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on the line VV of Fig. 4, showing the paper feeding carriage moved to the other end of its reciprocating travel. Fig. 6 is a transverse section on the line VI-VI of Fig. 1, showing by dotted lines the manner in which a coupon is passed between the gage and the coupon support. Fig. 7 is a transverse section on the line VII-VII of Fig. 5.
Extending upward from the frame 1 of the wrapping machine is astandard 2 in which is journaled a shaft 3, to one end of which is secured a downwardly extendin arm 4. The free end of arm 4 is connected by a link 5 to a power actuated part of the machine (not shown) by which an oscillating movement is imparted to the shaft 3.
To vthe other end of shaft 3 is secured an upwardly extending arm .6 which is connected by a link 7 to a collar 8 forming part of a rod 9 which is free to slide in guides 10. Fitting against the ends of collar 8 are ears 11 forming part of an arm 12 which is pivoted upon the rod 9. Journaled upon the free end of arm 12 is a roller 13 which, during reciprocating movement of rod 9, caused by oscillation of shaft 3, travels on one of the two side walls of the wrapper magazine 14.
The arm 12 is provided with guides 15' in which rods 16 have vertical movement. The lower ends of rods 16 are connected by a shaft 17 and each rod is provided with a pivoted pawl 18 which engages a ratchet wheel 19 journaled on each end of shaft 17. Secured to each ratchet wheel is a rubber wheel 20 which rests on a series of sheets of paper 21 placed at the bottom of the wrapper magazine 14. In order to place additional wrappers in the magazine, the operator by means of the knobs 22 lifts the rods.
16 until the wheel 20 near the free end of arm 12 clears the hopper 14, when the arm is swung up until checked by the shoulder 23 forming part of the collar 8, as is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. Wrappers are then placed in the magazine in such a manner that one end of the series of wrappers fits against the end wall 24-of the magazine. A plate 25 having pointed needles 26 secured in the lower edgethereof, as shown in Fig. 3, is then placed 1n guides 27 formed in the two vertical walls of the magazine, and allowed. to slide down by gravity until the weight of the plate causes said needles to penetrate several of the wrappers at the top of the series. The weight of the plate is gaged so that the lower edge of the plate does not touch the upper wrapper. Arm 12 is then swung down until the roller 13 rests on one of the vertical walls of the magazine and the rods 16 are permitted to slideventing rotation of the rubber wheels 20,
cause the rubber wheels to move the upper wrapper forward, and as the needles have less tendency to hold the upper wrapper than they have to hold those below, the up-. per wrapper is readily torn free from the needles, and moved against the curved guide 28 and thereby turned down to the position shown in Fig. 5. I am aware that a knife blade has been used for the purpose of holding the lower wrappers while permltting the upper one to be torn loose, but owing to the fact that the knife quickly becomes clogged with lint, provision has to be made for keeping the knife clean, whereas I have found by experience that small pointed needles of round cross section do not become clogged.
When the carriage is moved back to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 1, and pawls 18 and ratchet wheels 19 permit rotation of rubber wheels 20, the separated wrapper shown in Fig. 5 is released and permitted to fall down the chute 29 until it comes to rest on a support 30, as shown in Fig. 1. The carriage moves back to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and forward again carrying another wrapper to the position shown in Fig. 5. It will be seen that as wrappers are successively moved from the series, the needle plate 25 and the rods 16 and shaft 17 carrying the rollers 20 are fed down by the action of gravity. It will also be seen that as the rollers move vertically downward at all times, the nicety of adjustment needed to effect separation of just one wrapper from the rest is maintained uniform, owing to the fact that the forward travel of the shaft 17 on which the rollers are journaled is always the same as that of arm 12, causing pull of the rollers on the wrappers to be uniform.
Forming part of arm 12 are two arms 31 which extend parallel to rod 9. At the forward end of each arm 31', a knife blade 32 is secured by means of a screw 33. During movement of the carriage from the position shown in Fig. 1, to the position shown in Fig. 5, the knives 32 take against the lower coupon 34 of a series, and move it forward between the central support 35 and a gage 36, in the manner shown b dotted lines in Fig. 6. The separated coupon then falls down the chute 37 to rest upon a support 38. The magazine 39 for holding the coupons is provided with a vertical wall 40 which holds the coupons when return movement of the carriage causes the knives 32 to be moved back beneath the coupons.
When the knives 32 have cleared the coupons, the coupons come to rest on the central support 35, and two side supports 41 which are located at a lower level than the support 35, in order that the central support shall be the main one and thereby establish a fixed relation of a small portion of the coupon to the narrow gage 36. The. gage 36 is provided with a slot 42 through which a thumb screw 43 is passed and screwed into the magazine, whereby the height of the gage may be varied and clamped in place.
J ournaled in bearings 44 near the lower end of chute 37 is a shaft 45 to which is secured a downwardly extending plate 46. Secured to one end of shaft 45 is a downwardly extending arm 47 which at its lower end is provided with an extension 48 in range with an article 49 on a support 50 when the separated coupon 34 rests on the support 38, as shown in Figs. 5 and 7.
WVhen the wrapping machine'mechanism moves the article 49 forward against the wrapper, the article 49 by taking against the extension 48 moves the arm 47 from the position shown in Fig. 5 to the position shown in Fig. l, causing the extension 48 to be moved out of range with the article. Vhen this has taken place the plate 46 will have moved the coupon 34 to rest on the article 49 as shown in Fig. 1. It will be readily seen that when movement of the article and wrapper between the upper and lower plates 51 of the wrapper folding channel 52 occurs, the coupon will be carried along by the article, and the upper portion of the wrapper will be folded upon the coupon.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A paper sheet feeding device, comprising a magazine having a horizontal support for a series of sheets of paper, a slide located near one edge of said series of sheets of paper and having pointed needles adapted to penetrate several of said sheets of paper a a carriage having horizontal reciprocating movements on said magazine, said carriage provided with a freely moving vertical. slide adapted during horizontal movement in one direction to engage with and tear one of said sheets fromzsaid needles; means whereby said slide can be moved upward clear of said magazine; in combination with a horizontally reciprocating slide on which said carriage is pivoted; whereby said carriage and vertically moving slide can be swung clear of said magazine, in order that additional wrappers may be placed therein, substantially as described. I
2. In a paper sheet feeding device, a magazine for receiving a horizontal series of sheets of paper, a carriage having horizontal reciprocating movements on said magazine, said carriage provided with a freely moving vertical slide adapted for engageof paper; a support for a series of thicker 1 paper coupons, a gage located next to one end of said series of coupons and placed a distance from the support thereof equal to the thickness of one coupon; in combination with a reciprocating carriage provided with friction surfaces adapted to tear one of said sheets free from said needles, said carriage having knives adapted to take against and move the lower coupon of said series forward between said gage and support.
4:. Paper feeding mechanism, comprising a wrapper folding channel, a support for an article, a support for a wrapper between said folding channel and said article, and a support for a coupon above said article; a horizontal support for a series of sheetsof paper, a vertically moving slide located near one edge of said series of sheets of paper and having pointed needles at its lower end adapted to penetrate several of said sheets of paper; in combination with a horizontally reciprocating slide carrying a vertically moving slide having friction surfaces at its lower end, and adapted during horizontal movement in one direction to cause said friction surfaces to move the upper sheet of said series free from the remainin sheets and to tear'said sheet free from said needles; means whereby a coupon can be moved to rest on said coupon support, return movement of said slide then permit ting the separated sheet to fall to said. wrapper support; and means whereby move ment of said article and wrapper into said wrapper folding channel causes said coupon to be moved from said coupon support to rest between said wrapper and said article.
5. Paper feeding mechanism, comprising a wrapper folding channel, a support for an article, a support for a wrapper between saidfolding channel and said article, and a support for a coupon above said article; a support for a series of sheets of'paper, a movable slide located near one edge of said series of sheets of paper and having pointed needles adapted to penetrate several of said sheets of paper; in combination with a reciprocating carriage provided with friction surfaces adapted to tear one of said sheets free from said needles and move it to rest on said wrapper support; means whereby a coupon can be moved to rest on said coupon support; and means whereby movement of said article and wrapper into said wrapper folding channel causes said coupon to be moved from said coupon support to rest between said wrapper and said article.

Paper feeding mechanism, comprising a wrapper folding channel, a support for an article, a support for a wrapper between said folding channel and said article; a horizontal support for a series of sheets of paper, and a horizontal support for a series of thicker paper coupons, a gage located next to one end of said coupons and placed a distance from the support therefor a, distance equal to the thickness of one coupon; in combination with a horizontally reciprocating slide carrying friction surfaces adapted during horizontal movement in one direction to cause said friction surfaces to move the upper sheet of said series free from the remaining sheets, said slide having a knife adapted during said movement to take against and move the lower coupon of said series forward between said gage and support to rest upon the first named coupon support, return movement of said slide then permitting the separated sheet to fall to said wrapper support; and means whereby movement of said article and wrapper into said wrapper folding channel causes said coupon to be moved from said coupon support to rest between said wrapper and said article.
8. Paper feeding mechanism, comprising a wrapper folding channel, a support for an article, a support for a wrapper between said folding channel and said article, and a support for a paper coupon above said article; a horizontal support for a series of sheets of paper, and a horizontal support for a series of thicker paper coupons; in combination with a horizontally reciprocatlSO ing slide carrying a vertically moving slide having friction surfaces at its lower end and adapted during horizontal movement in one direction to cause said friction surfaces to move the upper sheet of said series free from the remaining sheets, said slide having a knife adapted during said movement to take against and move the lower said folding channel and said article, andv a support for a paper coupon above said article; means whereby a Wrapper can be moved to rest on said wrapper support; means whereby a coupon can be moved to rest on said coupon support; and means whereby movement of said article and Wrapper into said wrapper folding channel causes said coupon to be moved from said coupon support to rest between said wrapper and said article.
10. Paper feeding mechanism, comprising a wrapper folding channel, a support for a Wrapper between said folding channel and said article, and a support for a paper coupon above said article; a horizontal support for a series of sheets of paper, a vertically mpving slide located near one edge of said series of sheets of paper and having pointed needles at its lower end adapted to penetrate several of said sheets of paper; a horizontal support for a number of thicker paper coupons, a gage located next to one end of said coupons and placed a distance from the support therefor a distance equal to the thickness of one coupon; in combination with a horizontally reciprocating slide carrying a vertically moving slide havin friction surfaces at its lower end adapted during horizontal movement in one direction to cause said friction surfaces to move the upper sheet of said series free from the remaining sheets and to tear said sheet free from said needles, said slide having a knife adapted during said movement to take against and move the lower coupon of said series forward between said gage and support to rest upon the first named coupon support, return movement of said slide then permitting the separated sheet to fall to said wrapper support; and means whereby movement of said article and wrapper into said wrapper folding channel causes said coupon to be moved from said coupon support to rest between said wrapper and said article.
