The olneci; oi. the lnvention 15 to provide a new and improved crank movement more especially designed for use on internal com bastion engines of lhe two or four-cycle we, and arranged to insure a proper transo 1 ission of the developed power Without jar or vibration to balance the engine and thus provide an easy runningthereofv In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of two crank shafts geared i;o to run in opposite directions and each. provided with a crank for each cylinder oi the engine, and a yoke attached to the piston rod of each engine and providcd allcl guidcways having bearings enl by the two complementary cranks of ihe crank shafts.

lchc cylinders and 11 of each pair of cylinders reciprocate pistons 13, 14 connected by piston rods l5, 16 with yokes 17, 18, alike in construction, so that it suffices to describe but one in detail. Each yoke 17, 18 is provided with two parallel guideways 20, 21, in which are mounted to slide hearings 22, 23 engaged by the crank pins .24, 25 of cranks 26, 27 forming part of crank shafts 28 29 journaled in suitable bearings arranged on the main frame or base 12.
The crank shaft 28 isthe power-driven eiaft and provided at one end with a fly Wheel 7 and the crank shaft is a counterbalance shaft and is provided with a fly wheel 31 at the side of the engine opposite iihe one on which the lay Wheel is located, as will he readily understood by reference to Fig. 5"). The guirleways 20 and 21 of each yoke 17 and 18 extend transversely, that is, at a right angle to the axes of the shafts 261, 29. and the coniplcinentary cranks 26, 27 arc. so arranged one relatively to the other that the hearings 2;. 23 slide in opposite directions in their guideways 2,0 and 21.

The crank movement shown and described is preferably inclosed in a double casing--l0 as indicated in Figs. 1 and 5.
The crank movement shown in Fig. 5 is the same asahove described but is shown applied to the piston rod of a piston 51 moonied to reciprocate in the cylinder 52 "of an internal combustion engine of the four-cycle hype.
formed of topand bottom plates 69, 61 enneonates gaging at their ends screw rods 62, 64: provided with nuts (34, 65, of which the nuts 6% engage the top of the plate while the nuts engage the bottom of the plate 61, the two plates (30 and 61 being held spaced apart by spacing sleeves 60, 67 through which extend the corresponding portions of niost plate 60 of the. guideway 20, and the two guideways 20 and 21 are held adjustable on the two rods 62, 63 to space the same the desired distance apart and to space the in dividual plates 60, 61 and "Z0, 71 apart to insure proper sliding movement of the bearings 22 and 23; When the engine is running the power developed in the cylinders 10 and 11 is transmitted by the pistons 13, let to the yokes 17, 18 which by their bearings 22, 23 engaging the pins 24:, 25 of the cranks 26, 27 cause a rotary motion of the shafts 28, 29, and as the latter are geared together and the bearings 22, 23 travel in opposite directions it is evident that the shafts 28 I) and 29 rotate in opposite directions. As the shafts carry fly wheels at their opposite ends a complete counterbalancing of the engine is had to insure an easy running of the engine.
Having thus described my invention, *1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: I
1. A crank movement, comprising parallel shafts provided with cranks, gear wheels connecting the said shafts with each other to run the shafts in opposite directions, and a yoke having parallel guideways extending in a plane at right-angles to a plane passing through the axes of the said shafts, the said crank arms engaging the said guideways.
2. A crank movement, comprising parallel shafts provided with cranks, gear wheels connecting the said shafts with each other to run the shafts in opposite directions, a yoke having parallel guideways extending in a plane at right angles to a plane passing through the axes of the said shafts, and bearings slidable in the said guideways and engaged by the crank pins of the said cranks, the latter being arranged one relative to the other to slide the bearings alternately in opposite directions.
A crank movement for an engine, comprising a pair of crank shafts having their axes in aplane containing the axis of the engine cylinder, gear wheels connecting the said shafts with each other to run the shafts in unison and in opposite directions, and a yoke adapted to be attached to an engine piston and provided with two parallel guideways engaged by the cranks of the said crank shafts.

A crank movement for an engine, comprising a rod having a reciprocating movement in the direction of its axis, a yoke provided with two parallel guideways, each guideway having parallel guide plates, rods on which the ends of the said guide plates of both guideways are adjustably secured, the said rod being attached to one-of the outer guide plates, bearings slidable in the said guideways, and two parallel crank shafts having their cranks engaging the said bearings. the cranks being arranged to slide the bearings in opposite directions, gear Wheels connecting the shafts with each other, and fly wheels on opposite ends of the said shafts.

balancing crank shaft parallel. to the said power crank shaft and having cranks complementary to the cranks on the power crank shaft, gear wheels connecting theaSaid shafts with each other, and yokes adapted to be attached to the piston rods of the engine, each yoke having two parallel guideways and slidable hearings in the said guideways and of which one is engaged by a crank shaft on the power crank shaft and the other bearing is engaged by the complementary crank of the balance crank shaft.
6. A crank movement for a mnlticylinder engine, comprising a power crank shaft haw ing cranks, one for each cylinder, the cranks standing at an angle one to the other, a balancing crank shaft parallel to fjthe said power crank shaft and having cranks complenientary to the cranks on the pow-er crank shaft, gear wheels connecting the said shafts with each other, and yokes adapted to be attached to the piston rods of the engine, each yoke having two parallel guideways and slidable bearings in the said guideways and of which one is engaged by a crank shaft on the power crank shaft and the other baringis engaged by the complementary crank of the balance crank shaft, the said. cranks engaging the bearings of a yoke being arranged to slide the bearings in opposite directions.
