FREDERICK MESINGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SADDLE-TOP.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FREDERICK MEsINGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saddle-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a saddle top of the suspension or hammock type, for motor cycles which is reinforced in such a manner that it will, under all adjustments,
layer being preferably water proofed.
To the upper side of lower layer 3, there is attached a reinforcing canvas sheet 5, which is lapped also over flange 4, and prevents said layer from stretching. The canvas sheet is however, of .a smaller size than the upper and lower leather layers, so that it is set back therefrom, along the entire circumference of the saddle. In this way, any objectionable exposure of the canvas sheet along the rim of the saddle, or any fraying out of its edge is prevented. Canvas sheet 5 is attached along its edge to lower layer '3, by means of a continuous seam or line of stitching 6, while its lapped over portion is additionally attached to the flange 4, by a row of rivets 7. Over this lapped over portion and consequently along flange 4, there extends likewise a taut binding wire 8, over which the heads of rivets 7 project, and which is by such heads secured in position, the ends of the wire being bent over the shanks of the two flanking rivets if desired. This binding wire serves to greatly strengthen the saddle and prevent it from buckling or turning up between the rivets.
A padding of felt 9 is interposed between the upper layer 1 and the canvas sheet 5,

which padding however, is omitted at the center of the saddle, where the usual ventilating openings 10 are provided.
The upper layer 1 fits snugly over the lower layer 3, and is secured thereto along its edge by a line of stitches 11, so that in this way, flange 2 will overlap and conceal the rivets 7 as well as the binding wire 8.
The parts in addition to being stitched in the manner described, are also glued together, throughout, so that they form a compact unit.
Below the layer 3, there extends a stay spring 12, the rear portion of which engages a pair of bolts 13, depending from lugs 14 that are secured to a cantle 15 carried by the depending rear flange 4 of lower layer 3. The two front shanks of spring 12, are connected by a cross piece 16 through which passes loosely a screw 17 which is tapped into the threaded aperture of a bolt 18, depending from a nose piece 19, secured to the front of lower layer 3.
It will be seen that by manipulating screw 17, not only the leather layers 1 and 3, but also the canvas sheet 5 will become stretched, so that the tautness of the canvas layer will always correspond to the tautness of the leather layers. In this way the saddle top will maintain its reinforcement under all adjustments, so that it will constitute at all times a taut and reliable support for the rider.
I claim:
1. A saddle top comprising an upper layer having a depending rear flange, a lower layer having a depending rear flange, a reinforcing sheet extending along the upper side of the lower layer, and over the flange thereof, and means for simultaneously stretching said layers and sheet.
2. A saddle top comprising an upper layer having a depending rear flange, a lower layer having a depending rear flange, a re inforcing sheet extending along the upper side of the lower layer and over the flange thereof, means for securing said sheet to said lower layer, and a binder extending over the sheet along said last named flange.
3. A saddle top comprising an upper layer having a depending rear flange, a lower layer having a depending rear flange, a reinforcing sheet extending along the upper side of the lower layer and over the flange thereof, rivets securing said sheet to said last named flange, and a binding Wire likewise extending along said flange.
4;. A saddle top comprising an upper layer having a depending rear flange, a lower layer having a depending rear flange, a reinforcing sheet extending along the upper side of the lower layer and over the flange thereof, rivets securing said sheet to said last named flange, and a binding Wire like- 10 Wise extending along said flange, said binding Wire being engaged by the heads of said rivets.
FREDERICK MESINGER.
