To CZZZ w tem may concern Be it known that l, lVAL'rnn i. OESUHGER, a citizen of the United States oi' America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne g and State of ll/iichigan, have invented certuin new and useful Improvements in ndicators, of which the following is aspecication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
in the operation or'. multi-cylinder internal combustion engines, particularly those of automobiles, it is the present practice to maint-ein oil in the crank cese of the engine, to lubricate crank pins, bearings and other movable parte by 'splash or automatic feed systems, and this invention relates to ineens for fletermining the quantity or level offoii in .an engine crank case.
The object of my invention is, to provide an indicator of the Hoet'. actuated type which cenloe easily and quickly installed to indicate the quantity of lubricant in a crank case, the inciiczrtor being simple in constrnction, not liable to injury by orclinary use, and highly efficient 'for the purposes for whi'chit is 'intenciecl The above and other object-s are attained by a 'mechai'iicel constrncion'.that' vwill he hereinafter specically fleecriloecl and then claiinecl, reference will non' be haci to the drawing, wherein-- Figure l is longituinal sectional. View of the indicator-as applied to a portion ofi the cranlr case; Fien 2 is an end View of an :ingle connect-ion constituting' a housing for the indicator; Fig. 3 is n. bottonil plan of the indicator rliel, anrl Fig. 4iie e tcp plan the Sorce.'
the drawing, l denotes, hy the wey :in ernnple, a hollow angle connection heringz :i'ered inner end i, and c fiel-eci outer necioii is suitably connected, to the eife Wall. of en engine crank case 5, by screw bolts 6 or similar fastening Ineens, and this inner end, of the angle connection coirnnnniczies or ree-iste; with :in opening 7 in the weli 4i.
'The outer flared end 3 of the coi necion l is exteriorly Soren/threaded, es uit Z andsenterl on the outer end of seid conu .nectionis a 'alici plate 9 retained thereon by e oep l0, screwecl upon the outer end 3.0il the connection. The can l0 hes a transparent plate l1, preferably made of egles, whereby the diei plate 9 can be easily oo- The inner end '52 of 'the ongle core4 as shown in Fig'. l, and cooperates tmc cap l0 in holding the diei plate une ts 60 sent. TheI dial plate, as siion'n in F l and 4, has acircular enlargement 13 .m the end or the connection anfl properlr positioning the dial plaire relative to said connection. The dial plate preveneti from rotating; upon its seal; by tioivei 'pins ll engaging in slots or notches provided, tliereforfin the end of rche connection. it ie therefore'possible "to correctly posit-ion dial plate prior to placing the een l@ nnen l@ the connection. i 'i Journaled in the dial pir-.te if?, 'contiguous to an edge thereof, is e epinrlie l@ ami mounted upon the outer encl oi. seid rpinrlie is an indicator hancl or no' iter l?. f 75 ed upon the inner end of the crank 18 provided with a ici slot 19.

4Without further description, and While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall Within th'e scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is l. An indicator of the type described comprising an angle connection adapted for attachment to an engine crank case, a deV tachable dial carried by said angle connection, a spindle disposed eccentrically of said dial, a pointer on the outer end of 'said spindle adapted to swing in an arc over said dial, a slotted crank on the'inner end of said spindle and in parallelism With-said dial, and a float actuated arm in said angle connection and pivoted in the angle of saidr connection With Vthe outerend of said arm extending into the slotted portionof said crank whereby a movement of said lioat actuated arm imparts a rocking movement' to said spindle.
2. An indicator comprising an angle connection adapted for attachment to an engine crank case, a detachable dial carried by the outer end of said angle connection, a cap on .said connection having atransparent plate protecting said dial7 a pointer movable in front of said dial, a slotted crank back of said dial in parallelism with said pointer, means connecting saidfpointer andsaid slotted crank whereby said pointer and crank can only move in synchronism, an arm in said angle connection engagingvin lthe slot of said crank, and afloat on'said arm.
