To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1 ROBERT L. TATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminating Devices for Musical Instruments; and I do hereby .declare the followin to be a full, clear, and

Another object of the invention is to provide an illuminating attachment for carrying out the above object, that can be easily attached or detached from the musical instrum'ent.
" A further object of the invention is to provide an illuminating attachment of this nature, that will be of-simple construction,
cheap to manufacture, and will be durable and eflicient in operation.
Other objects will appear and be better understood'from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof in which Figure 1 1s a side View of a comet showing the illuminating attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the illuminating attachment detached from the musical instrument; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through Fig. 2. ,Fig. 4 is a rear view of the attachment showing the same partly in section. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a spring washer designed for holding the lamp carrying arm in different horizontal adjustments. Fig. 6 is a vertical elevation of a connecting bolt for holding certain of the parts of the attachment in operative position, and Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic view of an electrical circuit for lighting the lamp. Fig. 8 is a view of the electrical'connection between the batteries and the illuminating attachment. Fig. 9 is a side view of one of the batteries.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a musical inr strument, which for conventional purposes 1s shown as a cornet, and the numeral 1 designates the illuminating attachment as an entirety The illuminating attachment comprises a base 2, which is adapted to be- A '2, is a support formed of upper and lower The primary object of this invention is to provide an illuminating attachment for rotating movement with respectto the sec- 7 tion 5, and is held in position, by means of a hollow bolt 6, which extends through alined longitudinal openings in the respective sections 4 and 5 and has its lower end extending through an opening in the base 2 and received by a nut 7, which is adjustable against the under side of the base 2, the said nut being held against rotation by means of locking washers 8. The upper end of the upper section 4', is enlarged as shown at 9, and the enlarged portion 9 has one side thereof cut away to provide an arcuate shaped seat 10. The bolt 6 has its head, designated 11, countersunk within the lower wall of the seat, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to cause the head to lie flush with the seat. A spring washer 12, is interposed between the upper end of the lower section 5 and the lower end of the upper section 4 and serves to hold the upper section 4 in different horizontal adjustments.
Associated with the upper end of the upper, section 4, is a horizontally disposed lamp supporting arm 13. This supporting arm 13,has its rear end provided with an enlarged circular head 14 which is rotatably received by the seat 10 formed in the prevent disconnection of the head 14 from i i the cylindrical portion 16. The outer end ,tially around the head 14, the opposite end of the arcuate passage 23 communicating with an arcuate shaped-recess 24, which recess 24 opens into the interior of the head 14.
The base 2 is provided with a pair of metallic sockets 25 and 26, which are located,
respectively, on opposite sides of the lower section 5 of the support, and said sockets receive respectively vertical metallic terminals. 27 and 28 carried by conducting wires 29and 30, the opposite ends of the wires 29 and 30 having suitable connections with the positive and negative poles of a battery of a design to be carried in the musicians pocket.
A switch 31 is adapted to be suitably mounted on the musical instrument A, and is secured in place by means of a spring clip 32. The switch 31 has a push button 33 therein, and one of the poles of the switch has connection with one end of a conducting wire 34, and the opposite end of the wire is passed through the hollow bolt 6 and through the recess 24, throughthe passages 22 and 23, and thence into the interior of the cylindrical portion 19 and the arm 13 and connected to the terminal of the lamp 21. The opposite pole of the switch 31 is connected with the socket 26 by means of a connecting wire 35.
The base 2, sections 4 and 5, and the arm 13 and the reflector 20 are all formed of metal and when the batteries are connected to the base 2 in the manner above described,
' and the push button 33 operated so as to bring the poles of the switch into contact,- the current will pass from the socket 26 through the wire 35. through the poles of the switch, thence through the wire 34 to the lamp, 'so as to light the same, the current in returning from the lamp passing through the reflector 20, arm 13, sections 4 and 5 of the support. to the base 2 and thence through the wire 29 to the battery.
Therack for holding the music, is designated by the letter B, andby virtue of the provision of the spring washer 18, which frictionally engages the adjacent side of the head 14, the arm 13 can be moved to. and held in different angular positions.
This application is asubstitute for my prior application Serial No. 873,190, filed November 19, 1914, and abandoned December 9,1915.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. A device of the character described comprising a base, a hollow support mounted on the base and formed of a lower stationary section and an upper rotatable section, a hollow member extending through the sections for connecting the sections to each other,;a lamp supporting arm carried by the rotatable section, a conducting wire extending through the hollow connecting member, and means for normally holding the rotatable section against rotation.
2. A device of the class described comprising a base, a support mounted on the base, attaching means carried by the base, an arm carried by the support, an incandescent light carried by the arm, socket members carried by the base, conducting wires having connection with the socket members, a switch located in spaced relation with the base, attaching means carried by the switch, an electrical connection between the switch andone of the socket members, and a second electrical connection between the switch and the incandescent light.
