Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a type-bar. an operating key therefor, and a noise-dtaidening stop of slightly compressible material arranged in the-path of the type-bar and in position to arrestthe stop-engaging portion of the type-bar before the type thereon reaches the platen, and permitting the type tohe carried by momentum to the platenafter the stopengaging portion is arrested. thetype-bar formed with broad soles projerting'at opposite sides of the type-bar and presenting a large stop-engagingsurface to prevent the type-bar from wearing or cutting into said stop.
In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a series of type-bars formed of resilient.material and arranged to swing to the platen. keys for individually operating the type'l'iars, and a stop consisting of sound-deadening material positioned to ar rest the type-bars before the types carried thereon reach the platen, said tyl'ie-bars having broad soles arranged to impact with relatively large. areas of the stop when engaging the latter. said soles arranged on each side of the type-bars in staggered positions, the resistance of the stop being suiiicient to bring the impacting portions of the typebars to a full stop before the types reach the platen, the resiliency of the type-bars permitting the types to be carried by momentum to the platen.
In a typewriting machine. the combination with a platen, of a type-bar arranged to be swung against the platen, a compressed felt stop in the path of the typebar and positioned to arrest the type-bar as it nears the printing position, the type-bar being formed with a broad sole arranged to strike the stop and thereby prevent the type-bar from cutting into-the stop, the latter operative to arrest the swinging movement of the type-bar, bringing the stop-engaging por-,

adjacent type-bars having staggered enlarged surface-contacting portions for engagement with sald stop, the area of said contacting portions being suliieient to limit the compression of the stop due to the imtype, said stop being formed of nearly-solid. material and having a solid backing, whereby said stop-engaging portion of the typebar is brought to a stop before the 'type reaches the printing position, the type stroke being connuleted by momentum; the. typebar having enlargedstop-engaging surfaces projecting beyond the op osite sides of the body of the ty 'ie-bar. In a ty iewriting machine having a platen. the combination of aset of pivoted type-bars carrying types arranged to swing to a common printing center. and a sounddeadening stop in the path of the typerhars and positioned to engage portions of the type-bars nearer to their pivots than to the types thereon, as the types approach printing position, each type-bar having enlarged surfaces or soles extending in staggered relation in opposite directions from 'the body of the type-bar in position to engage said stop, the soles which exteudin onedirection from the bars bein' out of, alinement with the soles which extend in the opposite direction, whereby interference between the soles on adjacent bars is prevented. said stop be ing in position to beengaged by thev soles of the type-bars and arrest the saint: just before the types reach the printing point. thetypebars being resilient to enable the throw of the types to be. completed by momentum after the arrest of-the stop-engaging portions of the type-bars.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation, with a platen; of a swinging typebar; and a cushion. disposed in the path of the hype-bar for arresting its swinging movement just before the type-carrying end of the bar reaches the platen, so as to cause saidend to spring by momentum to said platen; said type-bar having a pair of imthereon which are positione'd to directly strike the cushion, and which extend in opposite directions at right angles'tto the plane of the bar, with their impact faces located in advance of the for- Ward edge thereof, to prevent said edge from contacting with said cushion.

In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a platen; of: a swinging typehar a cushion of yielding material disposed in the path of the type-bar; and a retainer provided with claws engaging said cushion to hold the latter in place; said typebar having an impact projection which is positioned thereon to directly strike the cushion just before the type-carrying end of the bar reaches the platen, so as to arrest the swinging movement of said bar and thereby cause its said type-carrying end to spring to said platen by momentum.
