WATER-DISTRIBUTING SYSTEM.
Application filed July 6, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE M. HUBBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Gatos, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water- Distributing Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sanitary water systems, and has particular relation to a water system for live stock.
The object of the present invention is to provide a system of the class in which the water supplied is provided with a medicine or purifying liquid, said medicine or liquid being supplied automatically in such quantities as to always maintain the proper amount in the water supplied to the drinking fountain.
Another object is to provide a system in which the drinking fountain may be easily and quickly flushed out in order to rid the fountain of any impurities. When the system is used for animals that bathe, such as pigeons or ducks, this overflow water runs into a bathing pan.
A still further object is to provide a watersystem in which the supply of water to the drinking fountain is automatically controlled by the valve of the supply tank.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of a suitable water supply entering a common supply tank, an automatic valve for controlling the amount of water entering said tank, one or more drinking fountains and one or more valves for diverting the water from the common supply tank into the drinking fountain, whereby the said fountain may be thoroughly flushed out.
In the drawings there is illustrated a sectional elevation of a sanitary water system embodying the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, like characters of reference designate corresponding parts.
The main supply pipe shown at 10 enters the common supply tank 11, preferably at the bottom and is provided with a suitable cut-off valve 12, whereby the supply of water may be cut off from the entire system. This valve is of course left open when the system is in use and the supply of water entering the tank 11 is automatically controlled by means of a float valve 13. The float 15 is equipped with a pin 14 adapted Specification of Letters Patent.

to receive weights 16. These weights may be applied during the day and cause a slight elevation in the water level and a slight overflow from the drinking fountain sufficient to wash off the scum when the stock is drinking frequently.
An outlet pipe 17 is provided in the tank 11, this pipe connecting with a pipe 18, and at their point of connection is provided with a three way valve 19. The pipe 18 connects with the main supply pipe 10 at a point above the valve 12. One or more drinking fountains 20 are supplied with water from the tank 11, through the pipe 18, a cock 21 serving to cut off or regulate the supply of water to a particular fountain as desired. Means are provided for turning the fountain bottom side up on the axis of its connection in order to drain and clean it. The cock 21 is an angle cock placed horizontally. This arrangement allows the front or overflow of the fountain to be raised or lowered to exactly the proper height. This is very important, as without this arrangement it is practically impossible to have all the fountains exactly the right height. A drain cock 22 may be placed at any suitable point in the pipe 18 to drain the system.
In order to introduce medicine into the water or to purify the water before it reaches the fountain 20, there is provided preferably within the tank 11, a receptacle 28 adapted to contain a suitable medicine or purifying liquid. This liquid issupplied to the water in the tank 11 in regular quantities, as desired, by means of a wick having one end within the liquid in the receptacle 23 and its other end hanging so that the medicine or liquid drops into the water. This is only one of many means that may be employed to accomplish the same result.
From the foregoing, it is apparent fresh and purified water or water containing medicine may always be maintained in the drinking fountains and that any number of these fountains may be supplied from a com mon supply tank. It is apparent also that by turning the valve 19, connection will be cut off between the tank 11 and the fountain 20 and that water directly from the supply pipe 10 caused to flow through any or all of the fountains 20 so that they will be thoroughly washed out. This overflowing water may or may not be caught in pans for bathing purposes.
Various changes may be made in the form, proportion and minor details of construction Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any ofth'e advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A Water distributing system comprising a main supply tank, a main supply pipe communicating with said tank, an automatic valve for said pipe, means for controlling the operation of said valve When more 01 less Water is being used, an outlet pipe also communicating With the main supply tank, a pipe connecting said main supply and outlet pipes, a three Way valve located at the juncture of the connecting andoutletpipes, a cut-ofi" valve and a drain cock located in said connecting pipe and an open trough sWiveled to said connecting pipe.
