To all whom it may concern: I
' Be it known that I, MAURICE'SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State a of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Insulation-Formin Machine, of which the following is a speci cation.
My invention relates to insulation forming machines and has to deal more particularly with machines for the manufacture of a. removable and replaceable type of insulation for flanged pipe joints, flanged fitting joints and the like.
The invention has for its general objects 7 to improve and simplify the'method of producing a split or sectional type of flange insulation, composed of alternate layers of wire cloth and asbestos or magnesia segment blocks and finishing same with plastic insulating composition so that it will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to produce, thoroughly reliable and eflicient In use.
Another object of the invention is the production of a portable machine for the production of flange coverings capable of binding, forming and plasteringsame. -Another object of the invention is the provisionof a circular or oblong formof mold fitted with radial and transverse channels at the 4 cardinal points of the same and extending inwardly, and adjoining channels running parallel with same. Thesechannels are for the reception of adjustable partitions and fastening attachments so that partitions can be raised or lowered as required.
Another object of the invention is the provision of adjustable partitions fitted with lugs for fastening purposes and a tapered slit cut in the center of each partition and extending inwardly and adapted to receive a binding twine for binding material on a form.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a forming and finishing trowel attached to the end of a balance lever, an adjustable weight being attached to the other end, said lever balanced on an adjustable fulcrum projecting from the frame of the machine. The adjustable weight regulates the necessary pressure required on the point of the trowel or former while the plastic composition is being applied, with such objects in View and others which will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention comprises many novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto. In the accompanying drawings which illustrate certain embodiments of the invention and wherein similarcharacters of ref-' erence indicate corresponding parts in all the MVIGWS, Figure 1 is an elevational side view showing the machine assembled and a tical view of the machine assembled. Fig.10 shows the disk form C mounted on -a shaft with the interior wire cloth and magnesia segment blocks and exterior wire cloth wound on the ends of exterior wire cloth projecting beyond the magnesia segment blocks and cut at intervals and bent inwardly and overlapping the sides of the interior wire cloth and both stapled together. Fig. 11 shows the disk v form C with the interior and exterior wire cloth stapled together and a perspective view of the plastic'composition applied.

A tapering slit t, is cut inwardly in the center of partition R for the reception of the binding twine a, which is attached to said slit t, and on form C being rotated the tension on twine a, 'draws the spring lever M forward, the pawl 71. and the cog wheel 9 catching at every degree of a revolution and on form C being stopped revolving the spring lever M moves backward until pawl and 7, by this means the necessary pressure is brought to bear on the point of the trowel when plastic composition is being applied.
The method of manufacturing the cover-. 1ng will be described in connection with Figs. 8 to 11 inclusive. The first ste in the forming of-the covering is having the wire cloth and magnesia'segment blocks cut to their proper dimensions. The binding twine a, is drawn through tension device P,

Both wires are then fastened by driving staples 2'. i. throughfthem and into the magnesia segment d. 0?. as shown in Fig. 10, the binding twine a is then out and the end fastened. Stove bolts g. g. are then inserted radially through the covering and tightened with nuts at the sides'of each partition'R. The alternate layers of wire cloth and magnesia segment blocks being wound on the form C- and securely bound together the plastic composition is now spread over the top of the covering by hand and the form C bein rotated rapidly the forming trowel spreads the material over the surface of the covering and trowelsthe plastic material on the face sides and edges of the covering down to a smooth, true and hard finish. When the covering is completed a knife is inserted at the-sides of the partitions and the binding twine cut through. Thus the sections of covering are removed from the form. I
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the advantage of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is scope of the appended claims. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination in an' insulation forming "machine, of a diskrotating form of mold, fitted with radial channels extending inwardly from the outer edge of the mold and at right angles to each other, a system of adjustable slidin partitions and their attachments for fastenlng fitted in said channels, and a tapering slit cut in the center pf each partition as fully described and set or 2. The combination inan insulation forming machine of a disk form of mold mounted on a shaft and fitted with adjustable dividing partitions each partition provided with a tapering slit'cut in the center, a bal- 1 anced lever trowel, and balance Weight supported onan adjustable fulcrum and so arranged that the trowel engages the face of the disk form while same is revolving.
