. which the following is a specification.
My invention 'relates to improvements in fireplaces, and the object of my invention is to provide a fireplace which shall embody an adjustably movable draft controlling device for varying the cross-sectional area of the passageway leading from said fireplace to a chimney which same device shall serve to radiate and direct rays of heat through the open front of said fireplace. I accomplish this object by means illustrated in the accompanying drawings whereinl Figure 1 is a view in vertical section on broken line a, o of Fig. 2 of a fireplace embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a view of the same in vertical section on broken line a@ of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an operative part of the same.
Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, 4 is the brick work of an open front fireplace which forms a combustion chamber 5 within the lower portion of which is disposed a fuel grate 6, and extending obliquely rearward from the upper portion of which is a passageway 7 that leads into a chimney 8.
The surface of the rear, wall of the combustion chamber 5 is formed to extend from the lower portion thereof obliquely upward and forward in a slight curve to the passageway 7, and upon an offset portion 9 of said rear -wall aljacent to the grate 6 is horizontally disposed an iron bar 10 whose top side is provided with a groove that extends throughout its length, and the opposite ends of said bar 10 are secured respectively to oppositely disposed iron end plates, as end plates 11, which serve to line the end walls of the combustion chamber 5 and which are secured in their respective positions by said bar 10 with the aid of a staybar 12 which extends horizontally therebetween at points in the upper portion thereof, as more clearly indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Disposed with its bottom edge resting within the groove in the top side of the bar 10 is an iron plate 13 which extends upwardly and forwardly in a curve that corresponds to the curve of the surface of said I rear wall of the combustion chamber 5. whereby the whole rear surface of said plate 13 may normally be disposed adjacent to the surface of said rear wall, as more clearly shown in Fig. 1, said plate 13 being provided with a backwardly turned flange 14 to which is riveted an angular forked bracket 15 whose` forks project vertically 'upward as morel clearly shown in Fig. 3. Extending through the brick work .4 from the front surface thereof into the passageway 7 in a line registering with the space between the forks ofy said bracket 15 is a rod 16 which is adapted to be rotated in response to the turning of a knob 17 which is attached to the outer end ofl said rod 16, and said rod 16 is provided withv a collar 19 and an integral inwardly extended portion which has been flattened and twisted to form a screwlike portion 18 which resembles the twisted portion of a carpenters bit, which screw-like portion 18 is disposed to extend between the forks ofthe bracket 15 to engage with the inner side surface thereof, whereby when the rod 16 is rotated in a clockwise direction for a rrequisite number of revolutions then said screw-like portion 18 will co-act with the forks of said bracket 15 to Vmove said plate 13 to tip it toward the front of the fireplace to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, in which position it will wholly obstruct the passageway 7, while a rotation of the rod 16 in a contraclockwise direction will serve to push back said plate 13 to its normal position against the surface of the rear wall of said combustion chamber 5 to unobstruct said passageway 7 in an obvious manner.
Obviously, the knob 17 may be turned a required number of revolutions in a required direction to cause the upper portion Manifestly, changes may be made in thev forms, dimensions and arrangement of parts of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
What I claim is:
1. A fireplace of the class described which embodies a combustion chamber whose opposite end Walls are each lined with a metal plate; a chimney; a passageway for smoke disposed to extend from the upper portion of said combustion chamber into said chimney; a metal bar horizontally disposed to extend between the lower portions of said metal plates to which its opposite ends are respectively fastened, said metal bar being provided with a groove disposed in its top side to extend throughout the length thereof; a stay-bar of metal horizontally disposed to extend between the upper portions of said metal plates to which its opposite ends are respectively fastened; a radiator plate of metal, disposed with its bottom edge freely resting in said groove of said bar and adapted to extend upwardly therefrom in front of and adjacent to the rear wall of said combustion chamber and into said passageway; 4a 'rod provided with a screwthreaded portion and rotatably disposed to extend through the front wall of said passageway with its screw-threaded portion in said passageway; and means associated with said screw-threaded portion of said rod and with the upper portion of said radiator plate whereby said radiator plate may be tipped forwardly and backwardly in response to a rotative movement of said rod to control and regulate the draft through said passageway.
2. A fireplace of the class described,
metal disposed with its bottom edge freely resting in said groove of said bar and adapted to extend upwardly therefrom in front of the rear wall of said combustion chamber and into said passageway; a rod provided with a screw-threaded portion and rotatably disposed to extend through the front wall of said passageway; and means associated with said screw-threaded portion of said rod and with the upper portion of said radiator plate whereby said radiator plate may be tipped forwardly and backwardly in response to a rotative movement of said rod thereby to control and regulate the draft through said passageway.
