Description

iii
ISIDOR LOUIS, OF KANSAS CITY, .WIISSOURTl ROTARY TOOTH-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. MHH.
Application filed July 19, l1915. Serial No. 40,613.
To all Htom 'it 'may conce/n Be it known that l, lsmoun LoUis, a citizen of the United States, residing atplansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Tooth-Brushes; and l do dedlare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the Same, reference being had to the accompany- 'ing drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates-to tooth brushes and has for its principal object to provide a rotatable brush which may be operated in a persons mouth to brush the teeth longitudinally with, as distinguished from transversely across, the teeth and thereby secure desirable results that it is impossible to secure with the ordinary brush having bristles fixed on a handle.
ln carrying out my invention I also seek to provide a sanitary construction which may be easily and thoroughly cleansed and which embodies improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing where- Figure I is a perspective view of a rotary tooth brush constructed' according to my invention. Fig. Il is an enlarged detail of the brush proper and its mounting, a part of the mounting being in longitudinal section. Fig. III is a cross section on the line III-HI, Fig. Il.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, l designates the frame of the brush upon which the other parts are mounted and supported, and which preferably comprise a metal bar having one end turned at right angles to the body portion to form a shoulder 2 and extended outwardly parallel to the body to form a guard 3.
The end of the frame opposite tbe guard constitutes the handle of the brush and in order to provide a substantial holding body and also provide for a bearing for the brush shaft I turn the handle body back parallel with the main part to form the auxiliary handle. part 4, the free end 5 of which may be welded or otherwise permanently secured to the body l. The shoulder 2, end 5, and base G of the handle are provided respectively with bearing apertures 7, 8 and 9, and
rotatably mounted in said bearings or apertures is a shaft 10, the outer end of which extends parallel with the guard 3; the inner end of the/shaft, heilig provided with a screw threadedsocket 1:2, for receiving a handle lil tl1at-.1nay be inserted into the socket so that it may be firmly attached to 'the shaft or may be removed therefrom when the brush is to be packed in a case.
rThe outer end of the shaft l0 has a socket 14 therein yfor receiving the shank of the brush frame and the sockete'd portion of the shaft is provided with radial slots 16 for receiving wings 17 on the brush shank in order to lock the brush against rotary movement on the shaft while permitting the removal of the brush therefrom.
The brush proper preferably comprises a tubular body 19 having an interior web 2() and a pin 2l which is fixed in the brush frame and is adapted for projection into the socket 14 of' the shaft 10, the pin constituting the shank of the brush frame and carrying the wings 17.
Fixed to and radiating from the outer surface. of the brush frame 19 are bristles 23 which may be of any desirable fineness as to the bristles or to their' arrangement on the frame, and which may extend to any length along the frame, it being desirable, however, to extend the guard 3 beyond the end of the brush in order to protect the users mouth, gums, tongue or lips from the bristles.
The arrangement described is provided in order that the brush may be removed from.
the shaft and the shaft removed from the handle frame when the parts are t0 be cleansed, or when any part is to be replaced should it be tarnished or broken. In order, however, that the shaft and brush may be held against longitudinal movement and accidental displacement in the handle frame, when in use, I lock the shaft against longitudinal movement in the fran e by means of a spring keeper 24, having one end fixed and the other end provided with an oset arm 25 that is seated in a groove 26 in the shaft l0 so that the shaft may revolve freely in contact with the offset member While the offsetr member holds the shaft against longitudinal movement in the frame, the spring extending through the hollow portion of the handle With the offset arm-underlying the shaft and seated 'n the peripheral groove thereof.
In using the device, assuming the parts t0 be constructed and assembled as described, the user places the brush in his mouth so that the bristles are in contact with the teeth and the guard 3 lying adjacent the lip of the teeth may be cleansed. With the crank member attached to the shaft as described, the brush may be turned in any direction without danger oi the crank coming off of the shaft.` After the brush has been used it may be cleansed by removing the brush from the shaft and the shaft from the handle, so that all parts of the brush may be reached by cleansing liquid.
It is apparent from the description and drawings that while the brush may be revolved freely with the shaft, it is held against rotary movement on the shaft by the wings 1,7 that take into the s lots in the shaft socket, so that the movement of the brush is with the shaft although it may be 'easily and quickly removed when the brush is to be cleansed or replaced. It is also apparent` that while the device comprisesa number 0f separate, coperating elements, it includes no small pieces, such as screws, that might become disconnected from the device and cause injury to the user.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent isz 1. The combination with a handle body, having a shoulder at one end 1n'ovidcd With 2. The combination of a handle body,y havlng` a shoulder at oneend provided with a guard extension and having its opposite end bent back to form a bearing and handle grip, the end of the backturned part being turned toward and secured to the handle body. a shaft rotatably mounted in the shoulder and in the bearing portions of the handle, a crank member on said shaft, and a4 brush on said shaft lying along the guard extension.
The combination with a handle member comprising a bar having a portion eX- tended at right angles to the body to'form a shoulder of the bodv and then extended parallel with said bodyv to form a guard, the said handle having a backturned por tion at the end opposite the guard, the backturnod portion andthe shoulder member of the handle having apertures. forming bearings, a shaft rotatable in said bearings, a brush mounted on the shaft and lying along th guard, and a crank on said shaft,
In ltestimony whereof I aflix my signature.
