a citizen of the United States, and a resident f of the city of Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Casting Apparatus, of which I do declare the showing partly in horizontal scription;

Upon a suitable foundation 10 rests the base plate 11 from the four corners of which rise the standards or posts 12. As shown, the lower ends 'of the standards 12 pass through the base plate andare secured thereto by means of nuts13 that engage the reduced and threaded lower ends of the standards. The base plate 11 is preferably a casting, the upper face of which is formed with ribs to give it the desired strength and centrally from the base plate rises the cylinder 15 that is bypreferencefformed integral therewith. The upper face of the bottom mold-section 61 is formed with suitable elevations 62 corresponding in outline to the shape of the these elevations 62 in a mold for car wheels serving to form the brackets or strengthening ribs on the sides of the wheel. Thebottom mold-section is formed with a central opening 62 and, adjacent this central opening 62' with a plurality of vertically disposed vent holes 63. These vent holes 63 have branch openings 64 near their upper ends leading into the central opening 62 of the bottom mold-section,
and the lower ends of the vent holes 63 communicate with an open space or chamber 65 formed at the bottom of the mold-section 61.
The lower portion of the bottom moldsection 61 is shown as seated within a recess formed in the vertically movable carrier or platen 70. This mold carrier is preferably a casting. having arms 71 proycting or standards 12. The outer ends of the arms 71 have concaved,babbi tted portions 72 that serve as guides to slidably engage the posts 12. The bottom mold-section 61 is'rigidly connected to the mold carrier 70 by means of bolts 72 that pass through the moldcarrier 70 and into threaded openings in the lower portion of the bottom mold-section 61. The underside of the mold carrier 70 is formed centrallywith a hub 75 that is screw threaded to en a e the upper end of the piston rod 17 w ie is ad ustably secured thereto by means of a nut 17 by which the mold cars, rier 70 is raised and lowered. These rails 57 are bolted to brackets 57 secured adjustably on the corner posts or standards 12 and are supported centrally by upright bars 90, the

the base plate 11 and and the upper ends of which are secured by angle bars 92 to the rails 57. The vertical bars are preferably angle bars and are strengthened by strap irons 93 diagonally disposed and riveted to the angle bars 90.
In using my improved apparatus, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, for the casting .of car wheels, the parts will be brought to the closed position illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and at such time there will have been placed within. the molds a central core of dry'or baked sand and a surrounding sand core 101 adapted to form the annular chamber around the hub of the finished wheel. Above the central core 100 will also have been placed a ring 102 of dry or baked sand, this ring having inwardly projecting legs that rest upon the conical upper art of the central core 100. The downward projecting portions of the annular core 101 rest upon the upper ends of the vent holes 63 and the lower portion of the central core 100 will rest upon the top of the su port 81. In bringing the parts of the mo (1 to the closed position shown in Fig. 1, it will be seen that the ribs 49 and 60 will insure the accurate alinement of the upper and lower mold sections and the chilling ring as the parts are brought together. With the parts of the mold thus closed and with the cores in position, metal will be poured through the opening 42 of the top plate and will pass down into the cavities formed by the mold sections. The vent holes 63 will permit the escape of gases passing from the sand cores through these vent holes to the chamber 65 and thence by the ports 76 to the atmosphere.
After the wheel 52 has been cast, the operator will shift the handle 24 of thethreeway valve so as to cause air, steam or other fluidunder prdnure to be admitted to the upper portion the cylinder 15 above the piston 18 and us move down the carrier :0 and the bottom mold-section 61, and, as these parts move downward, the chilling ring 51, the wheel 52 and the support 81 will also move downward until the antifriction rollers 56 at the sides of the chilling ring 51 contact with the rails 57, at which time also the lower ends of the port 81 will contact with the upper ends of the stops 80 that rise from the boss 25 of the cylinder head 16, and the mold carrier or rods 80 below the supplaten will contact with the stops B so-'1 cured adjustably by bolts to the posts or standards 12. The parts will then occupy the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the support 81 serving to sustain the central portion of the freshly cast car wheel 52. The cast wheel 52 and the chilling ring 51 may then be moved away from between the top and bottom sections of the mold along the tracks 57 to a point adjacent the annealing pit. As soon as the rimof the wheel is suiiiciently chilled, it will shrinkand will drop away from the chilling ring 51 and the wheel may then be annealed in the usual manner, and the chilling ring 51 be returned to position between the top and bottom moldsections'. After a chilling ring has been returned to position between the top and bottom mold-sections, the cores will be placed in position as above described, and the-attendant will then-shift the three-way valve so as to admit fluid under pressure to the lower end of the cylinder 15, thereby causing the mold carrier 7 0 and the lower mold section to be raised until it lifts or picks up the chilling ring 51 and the under surface of the top inold section 45, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings;
the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 wish it understood that the detailsof construction and arrangement above set forth may be varied within wide limits without departing from the scopeof the invention and that features of the invention may be employed without its adoption as an entirety.
Having thus described my invention,

A casting apparatus comprising a upper and lower mold sections mounted thereon, a. chilling ring held in place between said upper and lower mold sections when the mold is closed, means for relatively shifting said mold sections and ring invertical direction to open the mold and separate said chilling ring and the cast ing from-said mold sections, to thereby permit the lateral removal of the chilling ring and casting from between said mold sec- T lJlOIlS, and means for supporting said chilling i-ing during its lateral movement,

A casting apparatus comprising a frame, upper and lower mold sections n'lounted thereon, a, chiller held in place between said upper and lower mold sections when the mold 1s,closed, means for lowering .said lower mold section and said chiller to open themold and means a): arresting said chiller and the casting in pos tion clear of arms projecting both of said mold sections to thereby permit the lateral removal of said chiller and the casting from between the same. 1 a
casting apparatus comprising a frame, a fixed mold-sectilm, a movable ujoldsection, a cylinder and forppeiating said movable mold-section, a chiller located between said mol -sections and movable toward and from the fixed mold-section and movable also laterally from between the mold-sections, when the latter are separated and means for supporting the chiller as it is moved from between the mold-Sections.

A casting apparatus comprising a frame, a top mold-section at the u r part of said frame, a vertically mova e mold-- section beneath said top mold-section, avertically and" laterally movable chiller farranged between said mold-sections, and m cylinder and piston movable mold-section for shifting said lower mold-section and, the chiller to close the mold.

A casting apparatus comprising a frame, a fixed mold-section at the upper part of said frame, a vertically movable mold-section beneath said fixed mold-section, a vertically and laterally movable chillefarranged between said mold-sections, a cylinder and piston located beneath said movable mold-section for shifting the low'er moldsection Sand the chiller, fluid delivery pipes leading to the opposite ends of said cylinder and valve mechanism for controlling the flow of fluid to said cylinder.

A casting apparatus comprising a frame, a top mold-section fixed at the upper part of said frame, a verticallymovable mold-section beneath said top mold-section, a vertically and laterally movable chiller arranged between said mold-sections, vertical posts or guides for directing tht movement of said movable mold-section, and a cylinder and piston located beneath said movable mold-section for shifting said lower mold-section and the chiller to close the mold.
