Be 1t known that I, SILAs' FORD, a citizen of the United States, lfr esiding 'at St.
Paul, in. the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have inventedcertainnew and useful Improvements in Roofing-Strips, of
' which the following is a specification.v
One object of m 'invention is to provide in roofing strips'y o fancy design means 'for giving a vheavy appearan'ce'to ,thel lower' edges ofthe shingles.
. Another object of my invention is to pro; vide in roofing strips a reinforcement 'at the loweredge and extending diagonally across the rooflngstrip to stilfen` it Another object of my invention is to prop vide in a roofing strip having a diamond shaped design, a drip to prevent'water from running back under the roong strip.
With these'and incidental objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and `combination of parts,- the essential elements of `which are.
In the `drawings Figurel is'a plan viewof a portion of a-roof 'covered with roofing 1 strips of my improved design, Fig. .Q Lbein'g va sideelevati'on 1' of the Same. plan -view of my improved roofing strips,
Fig.V 3 is a Fig. 4being a front elevation of the same,
while Fig. 5 shows a` development` of the roofing strip, shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Fig.V
6 is a plan 'view of a-.modication of lmy preferred construction. F ig..7 is a cross section taken'on the line B, Fig. l, to show the manner vin which the folds of the strips interlock. Fig. Seis avplan view of a' strip before it is folded to'form the lroofing strip,
shown lin Fig.- v6, -to showthe development 'of the folds.' Fig. 9-is a v'section of'a portion of 'a'strip, 4as shown in Fig. 3, taken on the line .AA, viewed in the direction of the arrows, tou-show the folds in the roofing' strip, and Fig. -10 is a front elevation of the modification Vof my preferred construction shown in Fig-'6;
' In my preferred construction' 1 take a strip of prepared roofing of any nature, such as strip l, Fig. 5, and make folds along the lines 2 and 3, thefolds being. parallel, `and.
I' Specification ofLetters Patent.
Another object of my invention is to pro- V vide in a roeng strip a positive lock in two directions for different layers of iroofingf ratentednov, 7,1916. Application meanarehgieie; 1 serial no, 82,381.
thesefolds also being parallel, the resnlt being'folds'crossing eachother at rightan 'gles at the-points 4, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4; With roofing strips made in this manner,
fit is.' evident that with the roofing strip' 5, f Fig.' 1,la1d- 1p'on the roofing strip'., Fig. 1,
the foldsof'thelower strip will. registerand lock `theffolds of thel upper strip,-
plainlyA shown' Fig. 10,' whichis a cross- -section takenon thelinefBB, Fig. 1. It-
is therefore apparent that-'the' folds which in each roongstrip runat 4right angles to each other'and'intersect in substantially the .center ofthejrooflng strip, will serve as an interlocking'. means.A for 'the superimposed strip, Y the Vlock `running in bothv directions,
and also that the roofing strips are sti'flenedv inboth directions by these folds.
invente noted Ainnige. 41,3- and what the folds are 'made in such manner in the' strips, that thereis a projection' extending beyond the maiuportion of the roofing strip',- and' which when the strips are-.laid u'pon va tion ofthe two/folds, theprojection'7I being reinforced by the two folds. l
matter which way the strip is cutfrom a sheet'.of rooling, the iibers will extend in as Va drip, so that water running down the surfaceof thestrip will fall below the cor? ner between the folds of the strip next be- As'the foldsVv are'm'ade one right-handedJ and one left-handed, it is'apparent that no 8o .roof project down below the corner formed inthe roofing stripbelow bythe intersecy low and thus serve asan additional precau-` l tion against water being drawn 'upa under the top roofing strip.
to, but not piercing the. folds lin the roofing strip, and as each of the roofing strips used on the roof `islocked to the strips above and below, the entire roofing will be locked as' one unit, but thefolds will also be expansion joints, allowing' eXpansionjand contraction'v in all directions, 'so that vthe contraction and m, joints, and not,` accumulate l 100 The strips would 'preferably benailed at points V8, Fig. l, which '-would be adjacent As an alternate construction, l fold'a strip 9, Fig. 8,4 along lines l and 11, similar as described in the case of the strip 1 in Fig. 5, and then along lines and 1l', producing a similar roofing strip, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, but without the crossing of the folds in the individual strips.
vIt is evident that thestiEening of the roofing strips above and below will be simiy. dierent acute angle with the lower edge of said roofing strip.
lar to that already described, andthe projections? are provided in the 'samemanner as heretofore described, but ,that the locking feature is omitted.
While I have described my .invention and illustrated itin particular designs, I dov not wish it understood that l limit myself to these constructions, as it is evident that` the application of my invention may be varied in many ways within the following` claims:
ll claim: l. As an article of manufacture a roofing strip having multiple parallel plaits formed therein runningat an acute angle to the lower-edge of said roofing strip anda second.v series of parallel plaits running at.a
2. As an -article of manufacture a roofing strip having a series of multiple parallel plaits running diagonally across said roofing strip, and a second series of multiple parallel plaits running diagonally across said roofing strip and joining said first series ofplaits.
` of said second series, said plaits being formed SQAS an article of manufacture a roofing strip having a series of diagonal plaits therein, ,and a second series of diagonal plaits crossing s'aid first series of diagonal plaits. f,
4:.As an article of manufacturev a roofing strip having a series of diagonal plaits therein, a second series of diagonal plaits in one instance right-handedly, and inthe other instance left-handedly, so that a roofj the scope 0f- Lacasse,
o 1 Q ing strip so formed may register ano` lock with a similar strip superimposed on saic. roofing strip in shingle fashion.
6. As an article `of manufacture a roofingA stripv having therein aI series of plaits riuining across the face of said roofing strip at one angle, a second series of plaits running across the face of said roong strip at a dierent'angle, each of said first seriesA crossing vone of the plaits of said second series, said plaitsbeing formedin one instance lright-handedly and in the other instance left-handedly, so that a roofing strip soformedinay register and lock withv a similar strip superimposed on said roofing strip lin plaits meeting one of the other seriesl of plaits below the lower edge'of said roofing strip. v
. 7. As an article of manufacture a roofing strip having therein a series of right-handed plaits running diagonally across Asaid. roofing strip, and a series of` left-handed plaits running diagonally,` across said roofing strip,
at an `,angle to said vfirst series, each of the right-handed plaits meeting oneof the left yhanded plaits below the lower edge of said roong strip.
8. As an article of manufacturea roofing strip having a series of right-handed plaits -therein at an acute angle to the lower edge ofsaid roofing strips, a series of left-handed plaits extending at a different acute angle across the face of said .roofing strip, each right-handed plait crossing one left-handed plait intermediate of the' ends of said roofing strip and joining another left-handed plait below the lower edge of said roofing strip 9. As an article of manufacture a roofing strip khaving folds therein adapted to serve as a loclr in two directions, with similar folds -in a roong strip placed on and above said roofing strip in shingle fashion.
l0. Asan article o f manufacture a roofing r strip having folds therein,.said folds crossingat intervals and serving'as expansion joints for said strip.
1l. As an article of manufacture a roofing strip having g intersecting .folds Vtherein adapted to serve as locks between two cf saidstripS, one superimposed on the other in shingle fashion, and said lock fold being also adapted toV serve as an expansion joint,
