To all whom it may; 00m
Be it known that L BERT E. Rocmmm", a citizen ofiho United. some, residin of; Detroig county oi Wayne, State of 1V ichigan,
have invented a certain new and useful im govemene m Bordeofi tmps for spring ushions, and declare the followin to be a; foil, clear, and exact deseripeion of t 1e seine, such as will enable where sliiiied in the are to which it pertains to make and? we the some, reference bein hai to the accom' any ing drawings, Whic form a pai't'o thie specification,
This invention relates to seat cushion frames for spring seatwushions.
The specific ObJGCt in View is a seat spring for on automobile seat, having e bottom frame which will not only serve to hold the sprixi 5 along thebomiers but also serve to detac mbly holri the ugizoisitering skirt.
It is the object of t is improvement to so clamp the upholseering skirt in place thee in case for any reason ii; is desired to change the upholstemng skirooz' take ii; out for repair, it; may be reediiy accomplished. Thie Y cannot very successfully be done with the singiepiece clamping strips which are made-i heavy gage steel and "which when. once damped in place cannot very enemas-"' of vet fully be pried open to take the skiii'n one Without tee 'ing the skirt. The bowie? eerioe which carry tacking strips are objectionable because when the skirt is tacked on, it requires the removal of seveml tacks to gee the skirt off; and ihe tacking/strip in itself is inherently obiectionable as a, rather inse em'e way of? resisting the unusual vertical pulling sireeses in e seaizfspring for e vehicle.
ism'y perspeciive of the border 'etrip showin it inchingihe lowereoil of one of the helloe springs and the skirt of the upholstery. Fig, 22 is a similar view showing a modified form. Fig. 351 is a plan View showing how the border strip is assembled to engage-the iipho sieving; skirt.
adesigne nes the border strip which 155 made up of afoundation strip having a lower doubled flange U-slmpo in CZQSSEGG- Mon and opening inwardly so time it maybe pinched over the bot-tom coil 6 of the helioai spring. A vertical! continiiation'of oie flange aireaiyii'flude to may be celled the In the drawings, Figure 1 is e fregmew;
toned to the foundation strip .at tixfi iop in an edge which is bent outwerdly and then upwaediy, flee last bemi formim the lip o moi the firs? bend coo-nee siting with the structure new to be described in forming-e channel. i
Zihe second part; of this 51Wo-pert horde)? sen comprises a Web a? which eon he laid against Hie Web ofthe foamietion strip anoiwhich at its top iebeneoii'eweriiigg a iifiie more si'i'arply than the Web of thefoundetion sti i is hem inwarciiy, time veriice'iiy and fine 13/ outwardly to form the Ho e. These two bends of the webs form, a channel with a restricted opening when the two webs are riveteli eogecher, as shown} in Fig. 1, by gromets f, or when they are fastenefi together as shown in Fig. 2 by striking tongues out of one member which can. be bent beck through perforations in the other membeei In this channel groove the lower edge of the uphoistering skirt g may be pinched no its is ordinarily provided! a seweci-in eoi'ci which makes the lower edge. wider so me it may be easily grippezi in channel having a restricted openm' v In case it is desired to take theskmi; egg;
at any ltime the gmmeie can be easily oemoved Wieh eeuiteoie tool or the temedovextongues can he new: book into pee Pendiculor position toieiiow the diseseembiy of'the two 'webs.
In Fig. 8 the peefierebi Way of making i e eomplee assembiy is e The inner or Wheeie termefi the fehmietion pare oiehe ioorcier strip can be made in two pieces, or for ehet-mettee. ii; senile made in e single piece .Foei e the compieee reeeaogie neeeifsaey eo encompass the entire euehion. The outer whee might be termed the removable peril of the border strip can be made up ofe pair of stripe bent at each em?! to eiigegeei-oued the-eerie of the cushion and which, sii-igz-s are m'egiiifr.
shallow Eiehape. 'i'heseejeipe aim he meal to form the long sides of the horde? gem;
and may be supplemeiitedjioy o pair off shore ships to complete the rectangle oi; the eerie; These, as already eiiuziefi to, can be fee? in the manner gi tready described. v
,fihe spring seat ismenufoetm'ea by the spzing maker with the foundation steigi attached and the removeiiie 's'srips em to the automobile manufacturer or trimmer who rivets them on when the upholstering is in place "llihat I claim is: v l. A border strip for spring cushions,
having in combination, a foundation strip form part. of a channel and having means at its bottom to secure the helical springs in lace and a removable art com risin a Web adapted to be clamped to the Web of the foundation strip and provided with a bentover portion at the top forming a part of the said channel, said channel operating to pinch the upholstering skirt in place.
3. border strip for spring cushions, comprising a foundation strip in the form of a Web bent atlltS top to form part of a channel and doubled upon itself at the bot tom to form a helical spring-retainingchannel and a removable part comprising a web adapted to abut the web of the foundation strip and the bent-over portion at the top forming the other part of the saidchannel and a restricted openingtherefor,
and'means for removably clamping the two Webs together so the upholstering skirt can .be removably held along its lower edge in the channel with the restricted opening.
4. A border strip for spring cushions, having in combination, a foundation strip comprising a vertical web having means at its bottom to secure the helical springs in V lace and a removable stri com risin a vertical web, one of the said strips being provided at its top edge with a longitudinal corrugation which when in'place forms With the top portion of the other strip a groove with a restricted opening to hold the bot tom of the upholstering shirt, the said removable strip being adapted to be removably secured to the foundation strip, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification.
