BRAMAH JOSEPH mrLocK, or FULHAM, nonoon; ENGLAND.
VEHICLE.
Specification of ltetters Patent.
Patented Oct. er,
Application m s August at, 1915. Serial No. 47,190.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that l, BRAMAH Josnrrr DIP- LOCK, a subject of the King of Great Britain. residing at 3 Wylfold road Munster Road,
5 Fulham, London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vehicles, l of which the following is a specification I have before described a vehicle supported on feet carried by endless chains of foot carriers running on rails fixed to the body of the vehicle, each foot being pivoted to the lower end of a rod which was suspended from the foot carrier and was surrounded by a compressed spring,
The object of the present invention is to provide im roved means for connecting the feet of suc [vehicles to the foot carriers so that any sidewise tilting or twisting dis placement of a foot relatively to its carrier may be resisted and that when a foot which has been so displaced is raised from the ground it will at once resume its proper position relative to its carrier. this invention each foot is suspended from its foot carrier by two or more (preferably four) rods each surrounded by a compressed spring.
Figure l is a side elevation of the pre ferred arrangement and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and l are sections similar to Fig. 2 and showing the position of the parts when the foot is tilted and when the foot carrier is moved sidewise relatively to the foot. I showing the foot carrier twisted about the foot. Figs. 6 and 7 show a rod with a modi fled head. It
a is a slipper adapted to run on antifriction chains interposedbetween it and the rail.
b is a foot carrier pivoted at c to the slipper a.
d is a foot suspended from the foot carrier by four rods 6. The upper end of each rod passes through a hole in the foot carrier and is provided with a nut f and washer g. The lower end of each rod passes through a hole in a plate it fixed to the foot and is provided with a head i which lies in a recess'fin the foot and bears against the underside'bf the plate It.
is are compressed springs encircling the rods.
Z is a central stem which is fixed to the un- 55 (lei-side of the foot carrier and engages an According to Fig. 5 1s a plan elongated recess min a lug n onqthe plate it. This stem limits the relative movements of the foot and foot carrier;
I 0 arerims formed on the upper side of the plate it to keep the lower ends of the springs in position y a t l Fitz. 3 shows the foot tilted relatively to the bot carrier, the left hand spr'l accordingly further compressedgf I Fig. et shows a sidewise-dlsplicementot the foot relatively to the foot"carrier; ";;ln this case the rods become inclined anchth'e washers and heads are tilted so that they bear only on one edge, brought nearer to the foot, the springs. also being further compressed. 1
" Fig. 5 shows thefoot'carrier twisted aboiit,
the foot as a pivot. rods are inclined and compressed.
V In this case also th the springs are further? of the feet relatively to resisted and when feet so displaced are lifted from the ground they at once resume the proper positions relatively to the foot car: riers.
' Figs; 6 and 7 showhnother device having the object of providing greater resistance to the foot carrier being; 7
. v 4 Q 5 It will thus be seen. that all displacements; the foot carriers are.
longitudinal relative movements than to transverse movements, the bearing faces, of the heads a being made elongated or ellip tical so as to give a greater lift for the same" tilt in the one direction than in the otherq 9' may be made elon ing in it a plurality of holes, a foot also hav ing in it a plurality of holes, a plurality of rods, the ends of each of which through ah'ole in the foot carrier and the other through a hole in the foot means for preventing the ends of the rods from being withdrawn from such holes, and a spring surrounding each rod. i 2. The combination of a foot carrier having in it a plurality of holes, a 'foot also having in it a plurality oft holes,
, of rods, l through a hole in the foot carrier and the g other through a hole in the foot, means for preventing thhends of the rods from being a plurality the ends of each of which p'ass one tit? pass one withdrawn fromsuch holes, and means for limiting the movement of a foot relative to its carrier.
3. The combination of afoot carrier having in it a plurality of holes, a'foot also i having in it a plurality of holes, a plurality of rods, the ends of each of which pass one
