Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. HERVEY, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTLES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,277, dated October 24, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, J AMES C. HERVEY, of Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sewing-Machine Bobbins, Snc.; and do hereby declare that thefollowin gis aiull, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, referencebeing had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of hinged lid, hereinafter described.
This invention has relation to certain improvements in sewing-machine shuttle for the purpose of giving proper tension to the thread and allowing the more ready insertion or removal of the bobbin;A and consists of the construction and novel arrangement of material parts, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, A represents a shuttle with a threadhole, a, in one side 5 B, a cylinder, hinged within the shuttle, and furnished with a hinged cap, C, intended to close the forward end of it. D represents a threaded pin or fixed screw, projecting from the cap C; D', a loose washer or disk; E,
anut, workin g on the pin D; and F, a small spring coiled around the pin between the nut and washer. G designates the spool placed Within the cylinder B upon a spindle, g; B', a slot in the side of the cylinder, through which the thread passes from the spool, and thence through a loop, g', above the slot thence it passes through a slotted eye, g", on one side of the lid G, and around the pin D underneath the disk D', and is brought through the hole a, in the manner clearly illustrated in the drawing. The tension of the thread is increased or lessened by tightening or loosening the disk D' by means of the nut-E and spring F.
The spool may be inserted or withdrawn by raising the cylinder.
I claim as my inventionl. The lid C, washer D', spring F, pin D, and nut E, in combination with the cylinder B and shuttle A, substantially as speciied.
2. The combination and arrangement of the hinged slotted cylinder B, spool G, hinged lid (l, with eye y", washer D', spring F, nut E, loop g', and shuttle A, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereimto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
Witnesses: JAMES C. HERVEY.
