ATTACHMENT FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented t. 24 1915 Application filed November 16, 1915. Serial No. 61,251.
ments for Type-Writers; and I do hereby d'eclarevthe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to attachments for typewriters, and my object is to provide means for operating the key shift, space bar and carriage by pressure of the foot.
machine. v p A further object is-to provide means for stopping thev movement'of thetarriage in "one direction Y at a predetermined point.
And a further object is to'fprovide adjust able means for parts of the operating'mechanism,
Other objects and advantages win be hereinafter set forth and more particularly ,said bar between its 'piyotedand free ends.
' pointed out in the accompanying specification. I In the accompanyingdrawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1' is a perspective view of a typewriter show ing my improved attachment applied there: to. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view ofJtwoof the foot levers and foot rests therefor. Fig.
3 is a detail perspective view showing the manner of attaching parts of the device't'o parts of the typewriter. Fig. 4 isa detail elevation of a key shifting lever.
I Referring to the-drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corre-" p from the standard.
sponding parts throughout the several 7 views, 1 indicates a table iwhicli-rmay be 7 constructed 1n any preferred mannenupon which is placed a platform 2 and'mounted ordinary eonstructlon, said typewriteruhavs ingas parts of the construction, a shifting! lever 4, a space bar 5, and typeshiftingkey 6, and acarriage 7, all of said parts being;
5g, of the usual or ordinary construction.
In order to depress the space bar 501 the type shifting key '6, by pressure of the foot of the operator, treadles8 and 9'are hingedly secured-at one end ito a base plate 10, the opposite ends thereof-dieing positioned over levers .11 and 12 respectively which are like:
up'oh'said platform'is a typewriter 3 ofthe",
wise hingedly secured to the base plate, the levers 11v and 12 preferably extending at. right angles to the treadles 8 and 9. Ex-
tending upwardly from the free ends of the levers l1 and 12 are cables 13 and 14 respectively, the .upperends of which are extended through eyes 15 and-16 of rods 17 and18, the upper ends of said rods having hooks 19 and 20 which engage withlthe 1 space bar 5 and type shifting key 6 reispectlvely, said rods extending through openings 21 and 22 in the platform 2 and in order to accommodate the cables for tables or desks ofvarying heights, the cables are adjustably attached ,to'the eyes in anyssuit-t A further object is to provide means' for readilyattaching the operating partszto the able manneri so' that they can be lengthened,
or shortened if desired.
a one end of which] is fals'o pivotally' attached to the-base plate-105th; outer iendofrsaid treadle preferably having a? channel pulley 24 which engages; anoperating bar 25, one.
. end of which is'.-l1kewise.-pivetally attached to the baseplate,"thelpulley 24 engaging Adwstably attached to one of a, series of loops 26 formedu'pon' the; bar 25 is a cable 27 which extends upwardly from the bar over a sheave 28'and into engagement with the shifting lever 4; the cable preferably extending beyond the; end of thesupportingtable or-desk, gthe' end of the cable beingeo;
reinovably securedtothe, shifting lever. The sheave 28-is mounted upon'. the end of a standard 29"carried;- by,the- ".p latforni 2,2
brace rod 30 extending froinsaid standard to the typewriter-"to reinforce'said standard and holdtheitypewriter properly, spaced When .using -this improved device, the" be dispensed within lieu of which an ,ad- .100
justable stop31 is attached .tothe standard 29-to engagetheend of the carriage-7 as it is moved-iiiv one direction, thus directing the impact of the force of the carriage against the 'standard instead of against ,the usual formof'stop now used-upon the ma- 'chinethuSflObViatmg the possib lity of m juringathe parts-of thelmaehine should the ,-.same be returned toits' -init' starting position with undue for-oe;* 10;
The downward swmmovement the. bar 25 is regulatedbyxmeans of an admst able bumper 32 attached to'the base plate I a 10, while the downward movement of the space bar and type shiftingkey 6 is likewise limited by meansof set screws '83 and 34: respectively carried by the platform2. The levers 11 and 12 are returned to their normal elevated positions after being depressed by introducing springs 35 and 36 and 9 and the treadles 23, the rest block 87 is attached to the forward edge of the base plate 10, said rest. block having extensions 38 and 39 extending laterally therefrom to receive the feet of the operator and as said extensions are in juxtaposition to the treadles 8 and 23 and the treadles 9 respectively, it is but necessary to shift the foot sidewise and direct downward pressure" upon the various treadles by tilting the foot sidewise in order to operate the same. By operating the treadles in this manner but a slight exertion is required to operate the treadle and does not necessarily tire the foot or strain the muscles of the operator in operating the treadles. I
In some makes of machines there are three characters used upon each type bar and in order to bring any one of thetype in registration with the platen of the typewriter it would require two type shifting keys and in order to accommodate the device for machines of this class the treadle 9 and its cooperating lever is dispensed with and a rocking lever 40 provided, said lever being pivoted at its longitudinal center to,the base plate 10, saidrocking lever having a cable 42 ateach end thereof which coeperates with the respective type shifting keys of the chine, the movement "of the rocking lever #501 p *having'm shifting lever, a space bar and a being limited in either direction by means of adjustable bumpers 43.
If it is desired to store the machine, it is but necessary to disengage the cable 27 from the shifting lever .4 and the hooks 19 and 20 from the space bar and type shifting key respectively when the machine may be lifted from. the platform 2 and stored'in any-suitable place and when the machine is again placed in use, it is but necessary to'reen gage the end of the. cable 27 with the-shifting lever and the hooks with their respective parts which may be accomplished quickly. Having thus fully described my invention .what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatentof the United States 1-s:
-1.- 'lh'e combination -with "a typewriter type-shifting key, of .pivotally mounted Copies i iffthts'nctent may. be obtained for pressure receiving treadles, a plurality of pivotally mounted levers at right angles to said treadles adapted to be operated by said treadles, cables attached to said levers, means to removably attach said cables to said parts" of the typewriter, and stationary foot rests adjacent the pivoted ends of said treadles whereby when the foot of the operator is rocked laterally on said rests the treadles will be depressed and theparts of the typewriter operated.
2-. The combination with a typewriter having a shifting lever, a spac'e bar and a type shifting key, of pressure receiving treadles, levers engaged and operated by said treadles, cables attached to said levers, means to attach said cables to said parts whereby said parts will be operated when the treadles are depressed and means to adjust the length of said cables.
3. The combinatlon with a typewriter having a shifting lever, a space bar and a type shifting key, of a plurality of treadles,
a base plate, a plurality of levers, said treadles and levers being secured to said base plate, adjustable cables connected to said levers and said parts of a typewriter, a standard, and an adjustable stop carried by said standard adapted t9 limit the movement of parts of the typewriter in one direction.
4. The combination with a typewriter having a space bar and a type shifting key, of hingedly mounted treadles, hingedly mounted levers extending at right angles to said treadles and adapted to be engaged by crated when the treadles are depressed.
5. The combination with the carriage of a typewriter and a shifting lever therefor, of. a treadle, a bar adapted to be depressed by said treadle, said treadle having a pulley for engagement with the bar, a cableextending from said bar to said shifting lever, a sheave over which said cable passes, a standard supporting said sheave, and an adjustable stop carried by the standard adapted to engage and limit the movement of the carriage in one direction.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
