To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ALBEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marlboro, in the county of Middlesex, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in HeeLBreasting Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to heel breasting machines andmore particularly to means for cutting and removing the breasting chips and the object of my invention is to provide suitable means to cut the chip fromthe heel and to remove said chip from the path of travel of the cutter.

With this and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel devices, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and more specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, I have shown certain parts of my heel breasting machines sufiicient to enable those skilled in the art to understand the construction and operation thereof.

Referring to these drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my heel breasting machine, Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of arrow a same figure; in this view some of the parts are omitted and some broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Some of the parts in this view are shown in a different position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view, similar to Fig. 3, showing particularly the cut chips about to be discharged; the trimmed heel having been removed.

In the accompanying drawings, 10 is the base portion of the main frame, having an upright bearing 11 in which is loosely mounted the shaft portion 12 of the cutter holder plate 13. A spring 14 encircles the shaft 12 and bears at one end against the bearing 11. The other end of said spring 14 has its bearing against a flange portion 12 onthe said shaft 12. Said spring 14 acts to retain the cutter holder plate in its upper position, (see Fig. 1).

15 is the cutter and is preferably of curved contour. Said cutter is secured to the holder plate 13 by means of a screw 16. Adjustably secured to the base portion 10, by. bolts 17, is a U shaped member 18 having a recess 19 Specification of Letters Patent.

therein, in which are loosely guided the ends of a bar 20 provided with lugs 20 Said bar 20 has its ends loosely mounted on pins 21 said pins 21 having their lower ends secured in the member 18. The upper ends of said pins 21 are secured to the caps 22 which are mounted on the member 18. A spring 23 encircles each pin 21 and acts to retain the bar 20 in its proper position.

26ois the heel to be breasted and is guided into the proper position by lugs 20 and a guide member 27, (see Fig. 4) adjustably secured to the member 18 by bolts.

I will briefly describe the operation of the above mechanism. The heel is first placed by the operator on the block 24, under and in the path of the cutting knife 15. Thecutter 15 is then forced downwardly into the heel by means of a cam or other suitable mechanism, (not shown) operating on the flange portion, 12 of the shaft 12 (see Fig. 3). By means of bolts 28 adjustably secured in the plate 13, the bearing 20 is forced down with the travel of the cutter thus disengaging and carrying the lugs 2O below the heel, (Fig. 3). After the cutter 15 has completed its operation, the spring 14 encircling the shaft 12 will cause the cutter 15 to be carried upward to its normal position, the bolts 28 releasing the bar 20. The springs 23 will then force said bar 20 upward to its normal position.

The lugs 20 engage and discharge the breasting chip, 26*,through an opening in the base portion 10, into a proper receptacle.
