To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR F. BENT, a

citizen of the United States, residing in- Swampscott, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Beds, of which the follow- '.''ing description, in connection with the ac and is herein shown as embodied in a bed vertical position, so that the metallic bed of small size and commonly known as a crib,

and has for its object to provide a metallic bed in which the mattress supporting frame is capable of being turned up into a sub- J stantially vertical position whennot in use, and in which the headand foot frames in whole or in part are capable of being moved into a position parallel with the mattress supporting frame when the latter is in its can be converted into a substantially narrow box-like structure when not in use, which is capable of being pushed under the regular or full sized bed or pushed upagainst the wall of the room during the daytime. hese and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.

Figure 1 is a plan and Fig. 2 a side elevation with parts broken away, of a metallicbed embodying this invention. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the bed shown in .Fig.;

Referring to the drawings a represents the head frame, 6 the foot frame, a, d, the side frames and e the mattress supporting frame of a metallic crib or small sized bed embodying this invention.

The mattress supporting frame 6 may and preferably will be provided with a wire mattress bottom of known construction and composed of connected links 10 and springs 12, upon which the usual mattress 13 rests, when the bed or crib is in use.

The mattress supporting frame 6, in accordance with this invention, is capable of being turned into a substantially vertical position when not in use, and for this purpose, it is mounted-to turn on pivots 14, herein shown as bolts, which are extended through and supported by metal brackets or bars 15, extended horizontally from and attached to the head and foot frames a, b,

said brackets or bars being strengthened by inclined braces 16, which are fastened at one end to the head and foot frames and at their other ends to the brackets 15, by rivets 17 or otherwise.

The mattress supporting frame 0 is pivoted materially nearer one side of the same than the other side, so that when turnediup into a substantially vertical position as. shown in Fig. 6, suflicient space is afiordedbetween the mattress supporting frame and the adjacent side. frame cl. of the crib, to enable the mattress 13 and. the usual bed clothes 18, to be moved with the mattress supporting frame. The pivots 22, 23, are preferably located so that the free ends of the parts 20 of the frames at, b, are beyond a vertical plane through the said pivots when the parts 20 are turned against the mattress supporting frame.

It is preferred to make the head and foot frames in two parts and pivot them together as described, as the crib when folded up has a box-like shape, and further can be folded up into this shape with the rear side of connected With upright bars attached to the front side bar ofjthe mattress supporting frame e,see Fig. 2. i 7

Provision is made for securing the side frame 0 in a vertical position, when the crib is to be used, and for this purpose the top bar or rod 26 of the side frame is provided with downwardly extended end portions 27 which are adapted to fit into holes in brackets or arms 28 attachedto the head and, foot frames, see Figs. 1 and 2. Provision is also made for supporting the mattress supporting frame -e at the outer ends of the latter, and for this purpose, brackets or arms 30 are attached to the head and foot frames and are engaged by the mattress supporting frame, when the latter is in its horizontal or operative position, see Fig. 2. g The rear side frame (X may be made stationary or'as herein shown, it may be arranged to be dropped vertically down, so

Claim: I

In a bed, in combination, head and foot frames provided with stationary members and with movable members pivoted to the stationary members to be turned into a position substantially at right angles thereto, brackets attached to said stationarymembers and extended horizontally toward said movable members, a mattress supporting frame located between said head and foot frames and pivoted intermediate of its sides to said brackets to be turned into a substantially vertical position, a side frame connecting the stationary members of said head and foot frames, and a side frame connected with said mattress-supporting frame and pivoted thereto to be folded over upon the mattress-supporting frame and having its upper end detachably secured'to the movable members of said head and foot frames.
