To all whom it may concern;

Be it known. that I, THEODORE S, Lis'r, a citizen of the United States, resident of Itemsen, in the county of Plymouth and State of'Iowa, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Casting-Harness; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the inven-' tion, reference being had to the accompany- 1ng drawings, and to letters or figures of'reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, as applied. 'Fig. 2 is a detail side view of the rope carrying clutch member and parts connected thereto, partly broken away, and showing the rope. Fig. 3 is a detail front end view of the rope carrying clutch member, and parts connected thereto, partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of one of the hopples. Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of another of the hopples straightened out.

The invention has relation to casting harness, for use by veterinarians and others in throwing an animal upon its side when it is desired to cast the animal, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates a back strap, placed over the back of the animal, forwardly thereof, and having depending from each end a metallic loop 3, a metallic rope-carrying clutch member 4 being suspended from each loop, said member having fiat sides, spaced apart from each other, an upper cylindrical portion pivotally engaging the lower arm of the loop, and a lower enlarged cylindrical portion adapted for passage of the rope therethrough. A cooperating clutch member 5 is pivoted at 6, within the member 4, near the front end thereof, and has a lower arcuate head 7, grooved longitudinally thereof at 8 tofit the upper face of the rope, the grooved lower face of said head being toothed at the sides, at 9, to bite the rope. This pivoted member projects at its front end from the other clutch member.

The rope 10, at one side of the back strap, is fastened at one end at 11 to the loop 3, and carries two

12 and 13, the hopple 12, nearest the fixed end of the rope, be-

ing secured around the hind leg of the animal at this side, and the hopple 13 being.

Both hopples have sliding engagement 7 with the rope. The'front hopple is preferably provided with a pulley block 14, carrying a pulley 15, under which the rope passes, said block having engaged therewitha metallic loop 16, secured to the hopple strap 17, said'strap having a tongued buckle 18. The rear hopple is preferably made with a metallic loop 19 at one end through which the rope passes, the hopple strap 20 connected to said loophaving at its other end a metallic hook 21, engaged over the rope. The rope 21, at the other side of the animal, is fastened at one end, at 22, to the loop 3 at this side, and passes thence downwardlyto the rear hind leg of the animal at this side, a hopple 23 (which is a duplicate of the hopple 12, engaging the rope in the same way) sliding upon this rope, being secured around the hind leg, said rope passing thence upwardly to the ropecarrying clutch member 4, and through the lower enlargement of the same, under the pivoted clutch member, and thence forwardly of the animal to the operator. The rope 10 passes first downwardly to the rear hopple, thence horizontally forward to the front hopple, and thence upwardly and backwardly to the rope-carrying clutch member at this side, and through said member forwardly to the operator. A breast strap 24 is connected at its ends to the forward arms of the loops 3, by snap hooks 25.

In the use of this invention, a pull upon the two forwardly extending ropes will force the two legs of the animal upon one side thereof toward each other, upwardly from the ground, and will force the other hind leg of the animal also upwardly, and throw the horse upon its side, the pivoted clutch members or dogs eflectually holding the rope after the animal is thrown, so that binding of the horse is not'needed to insure safety.

The harness is of simple construction and easily applied, the following being the best mode of procedure: First place the back strap over the animals back, standing on theleft side; place the breast strap in position, engaging the snap hook with the loop at the opposite side; engage hopple 13 with the left front fetlock of the animal; engage hopple 12 with the left hind fetlock, the

hook on the outside and downward, and engage hopple 23 with the right hind fetlock,

the hook to the outside and downward.

I claim: v

1. Incasting harness, a back strap, ropecarrying members suspended from the ends thereof, a breast strap, a rope secured at its rear end adjacent to one end of said back strap, said rope passing first downwardly and rearwardly to one hind leg of the animal, thence forwardly to the front leg, and

thence upwardly and rearwardly and then forwardly through one of the rope carrying members, and a second rope secured at its rear end adjacent to the other end of the back strap, passing first downwardly and rearwardlyto the other hind leg of the animal, and thence upwardly and forwardly through the other rope-carrying member.

In casting ha'rness, aback strap, ropecarrying clutch members suspended from the endsthereof, abreast strap, arope secured at its rear end adjacent vto one end of said back strapfsalid rope passing first downwardly and rearwardly to one hind leg of the animahthence forwardly to the front leg, and thence upwardly, and rearwardly and then forwardly through one of the ropecarrying members,1a-second rope secured at itsrear endv adjacent to theother end of the back strap, passing first downwardly and rearwardly to the other hind leg of the anir mal, and thence upwardly and forwardly operating with said rope-carrying clutch members, a breast strap,- a rope secured at its rear end adjacent to one end of said back strap, said rope passing first downwardly and rearwardly to one hind leg of the animal, thence forwardly to the frontoperating with said rope-carrying clutch members, a breast strap, arope secured at one end adjacent to one end of saidgback strap and passing forwardly through one of said rope-carrying members, two hopples carried by said rope, a second rope secured at one end adjacent to the other end of said back strap and passing forwardly through the other rope-carrying member, and a hopple carried by said last named rope.

5. In casting harness, a back strap, loops suspended from the ends of said strap, ropecarrying clutch members suspended from said loops, pivoted clutch members cooperating with said rope-carrying clutch members, a breast strap, a rope secured at one end to one of said loops and passing forwardly through one of said r0pe-carrying members, two hopples carried by said rope, a second rope secured at one end to the other of said loops and passing forwardly through the other rope-carrying member, and a hopple carried by the last-named rope.
