LOOSE-LEAF HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1916.
Application led September `24, 1913. Serial No. 791,470.
To all fwho'm t may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM I-I. MUnrI-IY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Holders, of which the following is a specification. f
My invention relates to improvements in loose leaf holders.
The object of my invention is to provide a loose lea-f holder adapted for ledger purposes, which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, not liable to get out of order, and which may be quickly opened and closed.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings 'which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my in# vention Figure 1 is a plan View showing the leaf supporting members in the extended or open position. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly broken away, showing the leaf supporting` members in the collapsed or closed position. Fig. 3 `is a vertical section, on the line a-b of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the oscillatable members and parts connected therewith, the nut being shown in horizontal section. Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line c-f of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a cross section, on the line G-CZ of Fig. 1. y
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
v1 and 2 designate respectively the leaf supporting members, preferably consisting of right angled metal plates, having secured to them transverse leaf supporting pinsB, which are telescopically slidable in` leaf supporting tubes 4, of opposite members. The leaf supporting members 1 and 2, are slidably mounted toward and from eachother, on a back member 5, which, as shown in Fig. 5, is preferably curved so as to have the form of the back of a book.
Secured to the inner side of the back mem-` ber 5, are housings forming bearings 6 and 7, between which and inwardly turned ends 8, of the back member,'are guided and slidably mounted the leaf supporting members 1 and 2. Rotatively mounted in the housing 7, is a longitudinal screw 9, the outer end of which is squared to receive an operating key, not shown, said outer end of said screw being disposed opposite to a key hole 10, in the adliacent end of theback member 5.
Mounted on the screw 9, within the housing 7, and movable inwardly and outwardly by said screw, is a nut 11|, to which is se cured one end of alongitudinally movable connecting bar 12, which is pivoted' by two pins 13 and 14 respectively, to two oscillatable members 15 and 16, preferably comprising flat horizontal disks, which are respectively pivotally mounted on axial pins 17 and 1S which are respectively secured, as shown in Fig. 3, to two brackets 19 and 20, which are secured, preferably by spot welding, to the inner side of the back member 5. For securing the bar 12 to the nut 11, said bar is preferably provided in one edge with a notch 12 in which the nut 11 is fitted, Fig. 4, the bar at the same edge having a lateral tongue 11 which is fitted in a transverse slot 9 in the outer end of the nut 11.
Means are provided forY simultaneously moving the leaf supporting members 1 and 2, in opposite directions, when the oscillatable members 15 and 16, are turned on their axes. Such means comprises preferably, two sets of link-s. One set of links comprises two links, 21 and 22, which are pivoted to the leaf supporting member 1, `and which are respectively pivoted by pins 23 and 24, to the oscillatable members 15, and 16. The other set of links comprises two links 25 and 26, which are pivoted to the leaf supporting member 2, and which are respectively pivoted by pins 27 and 28, to the oscillatable members, 15 andv 16. The pins 27 and 28, are located diametrically opposite from the pin-S23 and 24, and
at equal distances from the axes of the oscillatable members 15 and 16. `The connecting member 12, as shown in'Fig. 4, is provided with an oblong slot 29, through which the pin 14 extends.
To move apart the leaf supporting me'mbers, an operating key, not shown, is applied to the squared outer end of the screw 9, and turned in the proper direction, thereby moving the nut 11, from the position shown in the leaf supporting members, 1 and 2, to thev` open position shown in Fig, 1. To close the leaf supporting members the operating key is turned in the opposite direction from nthe direction'` in which it was turnedto open said members. The Ileaf supporting members l Y and 2, may be supplied with the usual swinging covers, not shown.
I do not limit my invention to the structure illustrated and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of`my invention.
Having Vthus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is .1. In a loose leaf holder, a back member having inwardly turned ends and provided on its inner side with bearing means which include a housing, two leaf supporting members slidably mounted between and guided by said bearing means and said inwardly turned ends, a screw rotatably mounted in said housing and held thereby from longitudinal movement, a nut fitted on said screw and movable longitudinally therebyin and covered by said housing, and means actuated by said nut for moving the leaf supporting members toward and fromeach other.
. 2. In a loose leaf holder, aback member, two leaf supporting members movable on said back member toward and from each other, a screw :rotatably mounted on said back memberan'd held thereby from longitudinal movement, anut fitted on said screw andr movable lengthwise thereof and provided with a transverse slot, an operating bar fitted in said slot and provided with a recess in which said nut is fitted, and means actuated by said operating bar for simulltaneously moving said leaf supporting memers." v
3. In a looseleaf holder, a back member provided von its inner side with an inverted U-shaped housing, two leaf supporting members slidably mounted on the housing, an actuating' member rotatably mounted in the two arms of the housing, andmeans actuated by the actuating member for moving the leaf supporting members toward and from each other.
4*. In a loose leaf holder, a back member washington, D. e.`
provided on its inner side with an inverted U-shaped housing, two leaf supporting members slidably mounted on the housing, a
' screw rotatably-mounted in the arms of said provided on its innner side vwith two in-y verted U-shaped members, two leaf supporting members slidably mounted on said U- shaped members, the back member having on its inner` side between said U-shaped members a bracket, and means supported on said bracket and upon one of said U-shape'd members for moving the leaf supporting members toward and from each other.
6. In a loose leaf holder, a back member provided on its inner side with two`-U shaped members and provided on its inner side between said U-shaped members with a bracket, two leaf supporting members slidably mounted on said `U-shaped members, an actuating member rotatably mounted in the arms of one of said U-shaped members, means supported by said bracket for moving the leaf supporting members toward and from each other, and means operated by lsaid actuating member for actuating said operating means.
7. In a loose leaf holder, a back member provided on its inner side with two U- shaped supporting members and a bracket intermediate of said U-shaped members, two leaf supporting members slidably mounted on said U-shaped members, means mounted on said bracket for moving said leaf supporting members toward and from each other, a screw rotatably mounted in the arms of one of said U-shaped members, a nut mounted on said screw, and means actuated by said nut for actuating said moving means. y f
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM I-I. MURPHY.
