IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,175, dated October 24, 1871.

The nature of our invention consists in so arranging the bearings and frame for supporting the vertical shaft of a washing-m achine that they are readily adapted to and applied to any tub of ordinary construction without mutilatin g it, and thus to aflord a Washing apparatus at a very low cost, in such a form as to be compact and cheaply transported.
Figure 1 shows afront elevation of this invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a plan; and Fig. 4 shows a clamp.
The same letters of reference apply to the same parts in the several figures.
The construction and operation of the leverhandle and crank and shaft and internal mechanism are the same as in the invention for which we have filed an application for Letters Patent of the United States on the 4th day of August, 1871.
The novelty of our present invention consists in the manner of forming the frame and clamping it to the tub.
A represents the tub. B and 13 represent the ears or handles thereof. 0 and 0 represent the clamps formed of metal, each of which, embracing one of the cars 13 and B, is clamped thereon by means of the screw D. In the top of each of the clamps O are formed recesses E, into which fit the upper rail F. In the lower part of each clamp O is another recess, G, into which the lower rail H is fitted. Through the centers of each of the rails F and H the vertical shaft J passes through suitable metallic bushings K and L fitted into the rails F and H. The bushing K in the upper rail F has a bearing, M, formed on it to hold the prop N for supporting the vertical shaft J when introducing or removing articles in the machine.
The form of the recesses E and Gin the clamp O is such that the rails F and H fit in them by merely being cut off to the proper length to adapt the clamps to the distance between the ears B B of the tub A.
By thus making the upper frame of a washingmachine we are enabled to furnish the clamps and working part of the machine and send them to remote points without incurring any large outlay for freight; and they are easily applied to any washingtub of ordinary construction by persons of moderate mechanical skill, and require in so doing such tools as are always readily procurable.
hat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The clamps G O, in combination with the rails F and H and central shaft J, forming a convenient frame for a washing-machine, easily applicable to any washing-tub of ordinary construction.
