NTTED STATES PATENT CFFTCE.
PRESTON C. GIBSON, OF GIRARD, ILLINOIS.
AUTOMOBILE-LIFTING DEVICE.
Appli-cation iled April 29, 1916.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that PRESTON C. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Girard, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Lifting Devices; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lifting devices, especially designed for raising automobiles so as to relieve the tire of the weight of the machine and thereby extend the life o-f the tires.
The invention consists of a simple and efficient device of this character having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter vfully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing parts in adjusted positions in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. 4Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. l is an enlarged detail View of one of the rack bars and adjacent parts.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter', A designate standards in which the parallel lifting rods B are journaled, and A are supporting plates extending beneath said lifting rods and transversely thereto. An operating shaft, designated by letter F, is mounted in suitable bearings between and parallel to the lifting rods and a pair of pinion wheels H and H are mounted near each end of the shaft and rotate therewith. Collars L are also fixed to said shaft and one is'mounted adjacent to each pinion, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, said collars being of less diameters than the pinions. Rack bars K and K have teeth upon their inner edges near their ends and which mesh with said pinions, and 'the outer ends of said rack bats are connectd 'with the tsggle liaise-s P Specification of Letters Patent.

and E', and D and E' respectively, the said links D and D being connected each with one of the lifting bars and operable in vertical planes transversely to the lifting rods. Each rack bar is provided with a pair of spaced straps, designated by letter N, at the inner ends of the rack bars, said straps extending-from said bars around said shaft and engaging with the sides of the adjacent pinion and with the periphery of the collar adjacent thereto, to hold the teeth of the bars in mesh with the pinions.
A pinion O is fastened to the operating shaft and is in mesh with a pinion O3 mounted upon the stub shaft OL in suitable bearingsupon the frame, and O is a pinion wheel which is fixed to the shaft O* and is in mesh with the pinion wheel O2 upon the shaft OG, which latter has fixed thereto the crank R.
The. operation of my invention will be readily understood and is as follows: The parts being arranged in the manner shown in the drawings and the automobile positioned with the axles immediately over the bars B and C when the latter are at their' lowest positions, the automobile will be bodily raised by the operator turning the cranlr R in o-ne direction, which will cause the gear wheels H and H to rotate, driving the bars K and I in opposite directions which will cause the toggle linksto move to positions in alinement with each other, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thus relieving the tire of the weight of the automobile. A reverse movement imparted to the shaft R will return the parts to their normal positions.
that I claim to be new is An automobile lifting device comprising a pair of parallel lifting rods', a pair of supporting plates extending beneath said lifting rods transversely thereto, toggles' connecting the ends of said lifting rods to said plates, said toggles operable in vertical planes transversely of said lifting rods, an operating shaft mounted between and parallel to said lifting rods, a pair of pinions on each end of said shaft, collars on said shaft, one on each side of each pinion and of less diameter than said pinions, raclr bars meshing at their inner ends 'with .said pinions and conthezr outer with. the knuckles of said toggles, a pair of spaced straps on Caused to operate said toggies to raise or the inner end of each rack bar7 said straps lower said lifting' hars. l@ extending` from said bars around said shaft In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiX niy and engaging with the sides of the corresignature in presence of two Witnesses. spending pinion and with the peripheries of PRESTON C. GIBSON.
