To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR M. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Time-Recorder, of which ,the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to time recorders and has for its object the production of a time recorder in which the movable parts are automatically actuated, and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views. Y
Figure 1 is a front elevation, parts being removed, of the mechanism of one form of time recorder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of parts seen in Fig. 1, and including some of the parts omitted in Fig. 1, the case being shown in section. Fig. 3 is an opposite side elevation to that seen in Fig. 2, all of the contiguous parts of the case being included and parts of the mechanism being omitted. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of parts seen in Fig. '2, the motor and power transmitting connections operated thereby being removed; Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views illustrating in opposite side elevations, a portionof the power transmitting mechanism for shifting the card-guide laterally. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line 77, Fig. 5, looking downwardly. Figs. 8 and 9 are detail views in opposite side elevations, illustrating the operation of the means for holding the cardguide in a position to which it is shifted by hand, and contiguous mechanism, the same being on the plane of line 8-9 looking to the left, Fig. 3. Fig. 10 is a fragmentary sectional view, partly in elevation, through the power shaft. Fig. 1.1 is a plan view of the portion of the case shown in Fig. 3, through which the mouthof the card-guide projects. Fig. 12 is a view of the card used in this machine.
This time recorder'comprises, generally, two elements, one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one being shiftable relatively to the other to position said elements to make successive records, one of the elements of the printing couple being also member, a train of power transmitting means between the actuating member and the shiftable element, a second train of power transmitting mechanism between the actuating member and the movable-member of the printing couple, said trains being normally disconnected from the actuating member, time controlled means for controlling the shifting of the first train into connection with the actuating member to effect the shifting of the shiftable element," manual means for effecting the connection of the second train with the actuating member in order to effect the printing operation, and means operated by the actuating member for disconnecting said trains after each operation thereof.
The invention also includes constructions by which the shiftable element of the printing couple may be moved by hand independently of its power actuating means, and also means by which said shiftable element is returned, or controlled in its return, toward its starting position. Some of the foregoing features may, however, be eliminated.
I have here illustratedmy invention as embodied in a card time recorder in which the card guide shifts laterally relatively to the printing couple in order that successive daily records, as the regular in and outrecords, will be located side by side, and in which the card is shifted longitudinally or vertically in the card guide by a time controlled card abutment shiftable at regular intervals in order 'that the records of the diflerent days ofthe week will be in difi'erent columns or rows 0n the card, as will be understood by those skilled in the art. or type of printing couple in themselves, form no part of this invention, and are important only in so far as this invention is concernedin connection with the features of the invention cooperating therewith to effect the movements thereof. Also, other mechanisms, as for instance, the mechanism wheels 1, and the other of which is a hammer 2 movable toward and from the type of the wheels 1 at the printing line, in order to make a record, through a suitable inking ribbon, on the card in the card guide. The card guide or receiver 3 extends between the type wheels 1 and the hammer 2. These type wheels 1 are carried by a suitable carriage 4 supported between the side plates 5, 6 of the main frame 7 which is secured to the rear Wall of the suitable casing 8.
The type wheels 1 are connected in any suitable manner to the time movement through gearing supported by the carriage 4, the gearing being connected by a shaft 9 to a time movement, not shown, which is arranged in the upper part of the casing in the ordinary manner. The card guide 3 is shiftable laterally along guide rods 10 be tween the side plates 5, 6 of the main frame and is provided with suitable passages for said rods 10, Fig. 4.
The hammer 2 is mounted on a suitable rock shaft 11 and is actuated by a lever 12, see Fig. 2, mounted at its rear end on a rock shaft 13 journaled in the side plates 5, 6 of the main frame, and having a hook shape latch 14 pivoted thereto and coacting with a projecting arm 15 on the rock shaft, so that upon downward movement of the lever 12, the rock shaft 11 will be rocked against the action of its returning spring 16 in order to draw back the hammer into position to strike, when-released, the blowto make the record. The hammer 2 and its shaft 11 are released by means of a knock-0E device 17 carried on an arm provided on the rock shaft, this device 17 being located above the arm 15 and coacting with an extension 18 on the latch 14 so that the said device pushes the latch 14 on its pivot and disengages the hook thereof from the arm 15, after the hammer has been withdrawn sufiiciently. This form of hammer mechanism and actuating lever 12 per 86 forms no part of this invention.
19 is the movable card abutment movable in the card guide 3, and shiftable upwardly at regular intervals, as once every twentyfour hours until it reaches its topmost position from which point it falls to its starting-position at the end of each week. Said abutment is shifted by the time movement in y suitable manner, and as here shown, see ig.,4, it is shifted by means of a lever 20 pivoted at 21 on a rod extending between the side plates 5, 6, Fig. 1, the lever bei g double, as seen in Fig. 1, and one ar thereof having a pin 22 which coacts with a double scroll cam 23 mounted on a shaft 24 journaled in the side plates '5, 6. A link 25 connects the forward end of the lever 20 to the abutment 19, the link being slidable along a rod 26 connecting the front ends of the lever arms 20 in order to conform to the lateral shifting of the card guide 3. The shaft 24 upon which the cam 23 is mounted extendsthrough the side plate 6 of the main frame and is connected to the clock driven shaft 9 in any suitable manner.
As here shown, the shaft 24.is provided with a ratchet wheel 27 at its outer end which cooperates with the pawl 28 on a reciprocating link 29 suitably supported on the outer face of the side plate 6, the link 29 being connected at its upper end to a lever 30 which coacts at its free end with a scroll cam 31, so constructed that the lever 30 is raised slowly against the action of its returning spring 32, causing the'pawl 28 to take hold of a new tooth on the ratchet wheel 27, so that when the lever 30 falls from the high point to the low point of the cam 31, the link 29 moves downwardly and shifts the ratchet wheel 27 and parts connected thereto, a single step. The cam 31 is mounted on the outer end of a shaft 33, Fig. 4, which is connected by means of a train of gearing 34 to the shaft 9.
35 is a card operated lock carried by the abutment 19 and operated to release the hammer operating mechanism to be described. Said card lock 35 operates an elongated wing or crank 36 which is carried by the abutment and which coacts with a vertically elongatedcrank 37 j ournaled in suitable bearings 38 carried by the side plate 6 of the main frame, the wing 36 being of sufficient length to coact with the crank 37 in any lateral position of the card guide, and the crank 37 being of sufiicient length to coact with the wing 36 in any vertical position of the abutment.
I do not claim as my invention the mechanisms thus far described which form the subject matter of applications of parties other than myself, and the same are important so far as this invention is concerned only in combination with the mechanisms about to be described.
39 is a base mounted in the bottom of the case 8.
40 is the actuating member as a power shaft, and 41 is an electric motor connected to the power shaft in any suitable manner as by a worm 42 mounted on the armature shaft thereof and meshing with a Worm gear 43 mounted on the shaft 40, Figs. 1 and 10, the shaft and the motor being mounted on the base 39. The motor is usually a normally idle electric motor, but obviously may be any other form of energizer or I 'primary actuating means.
which permits the driven member to be actuated independently of the driving member in order that the card guide 3 may be shifted laterally by hand independently of the power transmitting mechanism. Said power transmitting mechanism includes a shiftable part which is normally disconnected from the power shaft and which is controlled in its shifting movement into connection with the power shaft, by time controlled means which also controls the actuation or the energizing of the motor. In the illustrated form of my invention, the driven member of said power transmitting mechanims includes a rock shaft 44,.Figs. 1, 3, 5 and 6, a toothed segment 47 mounted on the rock shaft and meshing with a rack 48 associated with the card guide 3; and the driven member includes a ratchet wheel or segment 49 loosely mounted on the rock shaft 44 and having a shoulder 50 projecting from one side thereof which coacts with an arm 51 provided on the rock shaft 44. When the ratchet wheel 49 is actuated, the shoulder 50 abuts against the arm 51 and shifts the card guide 3 laterally to the right against the action of the returning spring 52, Fig. 3, acting on the rock shaft. The shoulder 50 normally abuts against a stop shoulder 53, Fig. 5, provided on the arm projecting outwardly from the side plate 5 of the main frame, this shoulder 53 determining the starting position of the card receiver. The rock shaft is supported by suitable brackets projecting from the side plate 5. The power transmitting mechanism between the shaft 40 and the card guide 3 also includes a pawl 54 carried at the upper end of the elongated link or rod 55 mounted on a crank pin 56, Fig. 3, carried on a sleeve 57 loosely mounted on one end of the power shaft 40, the sleevebeing connected to the power shaft 40 by a shiftable part as a clutch section 58 keyed or otherwise secured to the sleeve, as seen in Fig. 10, and movable lengthwise thereof into and out of engagement with a clutch section 59 fixed on said shaft 40, the clutch section 58 being movable into engagement with the clutch section 59 by a spring 60 encircling the sleeve 57 and interposed between a head thereon and the clutch section 58. The clutc section 58 is normally held out of engag ment with the clutch section 59 as hereinafter described, and is controlled inits movement by time controlled means. This time controlled means includes a cam wheel 61, Fig; 3, andparts operated by the cam and coacting with the clutch section 58, to control the shifting thereof. The cam as here illustrated is mounted on one end of a shaft 62, journaled in suitable bearings in the side plates 5, 6 of the frame and having at its other end a bevel gear 64, Fig. 1, meshing with the bevel gear mounted on one .75 and carrying the latch end of the upwardly extending shaft 66, which carries at its other end a gear 67 meshing with the gear 68 mounted on. the
outer end of the shaft 33 upon which the a cam 31 is mounted. The-shaft 33 is con nected asbefore stated to the shaft 9 by the gearing 34. The ratio of gearing between the shaft 9 and the cam wheel 61 is such that the cam wheel rotates once every twentyfour hours and said cam is provided with twenty-four sets or pairs of holes 69 for the securement of cam points 70. These points 7 are adjustable in any one of the pairof holes 69 so that the cam acts at any desired predetermined intervals. There are three cam points shown adjusted to act at the tiguous ends and at their opposite ends at 74, to the side plate 5 and to the base 39 supporting the power shaft 40, and motor 41, the upper link having a cam point 76- which coacts with the cam points 70 so that the links are shifted laterally at predetermined intervals against the action of the returning spring 77. The lower link 72 carries means as a latch 78 coacting with means as a detent 79 pivoted at 80 to the base 39, the detent having a shoulder or notch 81 which receives means as a peripheral shoulder 82 on the movable clutch section 58, and normally holds the clutch section from turning. The latch means 78 is also provided with a cam face 83 arranged to be engaged by the end of said shoulder 82 in order to disconnect the latch 78 from the shoulder 84 on said detent 79. The notch 81 is inclined as shown at 85, Fig. 1, in order to shift the clutch section 58 laterally to the left, Fig. 1, as it completes a rotation. The parts operated by the time controlled cam 61 also operate a switch which controls the energizing of the motor 41. As here illus-. trated, the detent 79 carries a switch contact 86 which is movable during the movement of the detent 79 into engagement with the terminal 87 connected in the motor circuit to close said circuit and cause the motor '41 to be energized.
In the operation of the time controlled means, one ofthe cam points 70 engages the cam surface 76 of the link 71, and said link is shifted gradually to the right on its pivot 74 moving the link 72 about its pivot ment with the shoulder 84 on the detent 7 9.

78 into engage point of the cam 76, the spring 77 returns the links 71, 72 to the left and the latch 78, being engaged with the shoulder 84, pulls the detent 79 to the left carrying its shoulder 81 out from under the shoulder 82 on the clutch section 59, and at the same time carries the contact 86 into engagement with the terminal 87, thus releasing the clutch section 58 so that it is moved or shifted by its spring 60 into engagement with the clutch section 59 and at the same time causing the motor to be energized so that the shaft 40 is madeactive, the clutch section 58 and sleeve 57 is rotated, and the link 55 reciprocated, and hence the pawl 54 at the upper end of the link 55 is engaged with a tooth of the ratchet wheel 49 to shift the ratchet wheel one tooth, and the card guide one step to the right. As the shaft 40 and clutch section 58 near the completion of a revolution, the pin 82 engages the knock-off surface of the latch 78 and disengages said latch 78 from the shoulder 84 permitting the detent 78 to be returned to its starting position by its spring 88, and carrying its shoulder 81 into the path of the pin 82. The shoulder 82 engages the cam 85 of the shoulder 81 causing the clutch section 58 to be again shifted to its inactive position. The cam 61 effects this shifting movement at predetermined intervals and the ratchet wheel 49 and parts actuated thereby, are nor. nally prevented from movement from the position to which they have been shifted by means of a detent 89, Figs. 5, 6 coacting with said ratchet wheel. This detent 89 is pressed into operative position by a spring 90 and is moved out of operative position by time controlled means here shown as connected to the shaft 24 upon which the cam 23 is mounted which controls the movement of the card abutment. This time controlled means consists of the cam wheel 91 which resembles a ratchet wheel Figs. 3, 4 and 7 "mounted on the shaft 24, a lever 92 pivoted to the side plate 5 and coacting with the cam wheel 91 and held by a spring 93 in engagement with saidcam wheel, a reciprocating link 94 having a shoulder or hook 95, Figs. 5 and 6, at its upper end movable into operative engagement with the shoulder 96 on the detent 89, and means connecting the lever 92 and the link 94. Said means consists of a lever 94 pivoted to the outer side of the plate 5 and connected to the link 94, and a shoulder 92 projecting laterally from the lever 92 through an opening in the side plate and extending through a hole in the lever 94*. The end of the hook 95 is normally pressed against the side of the shoulder 96 by a spring 95 acting on the link 94, so that when the hook is carried above the shoulder 96, it is hooked over the shoulder by said spring 95*. when the lifts of the cam raise the lever 92 against the actionof the spring 93, the hook 95 is gradually raised to engage the shoulder 96, and when the pin 93 of the lever 92 drops from the high to the low point of the lift, the link 94 will be pulled downwardly withdrawing the detent 89; and the ratchet wheel 49 and the parts operated by said wheel will be returned to their starting position by the spring 52 acting on the rock shaft 44. The hook 95 is disconnected from the shoulder 96 when the ratchet wheel and associated parts approach their starting position, by a knock-off pin 98 provided on the ratchet wheel, and engaging an arm or extension 99 on the link 94. 1
A shield 100, Figs. 5 and 6, is provided for rendering blank the tooth of the ratchet wheel 49 which would cause the card guide to be shifted automatically beyond the night out position, said shield being for the purpose of preventing automatic shifting in case the pawl 54 and its actuating means should be accidentally operated. The shield is located on one side face of the ratchet wheel 49 so as not to interfere with the operation of the pawl or detent 89 and the pawl 54 is of double width so as to engage said shield. Said shield is held in position by a screw 101.
The card guide 3 is shiftable laterally by hand, additionally to the movement effected or controlled by the time cam 61, this movement being efiected by turning the rock shaft 44 by means of a handle 102 located on the outside of the casing, see Fig. 3, the movement of this rock shaft being permitted by reason of the connection formed by the shoulder 50 and arm 51, Figs. 5 and 6,'this movement being for the purpose of permitting the card receiver to be adjusted laterally beyond the point where it is shifted automatically by the time controlled means, into position to receive the extra in or extra out registration, as for instance, when the workman leaves before the regular quitting time, or when he works overtime.
The card guide is held in the position to which it is adjusted by the handle 102, by means of a pawl 103 suitably carried by the main frame or side plate 5 thereof, Figs. 5, 8 and 9, the pawl 103 coacting with a ratchet disk 104 mounted on and rotatable with the rock shaft 44, this disk having two teeth 104 corresponding to the extra in and extra out positions of the card guide, that is, they are arranged to receive the pawl 103 when the card guide is in its extra in or extra out position. The pawl is moved into engagement with the teeth 104 by gravity and when not engaged with said teeth slides on the periphery of the'disk 104. Said pawl is moved out of engagement with the teeth 104 upon each operation of the printingcouple by a connection between the hammer actuating lever 12 and said pawl 103. This connection comprises a reciprocating link 105 pivoted at'one end at 106 to a rearwardly extending arm 107 mounted on the shaft 13, Fig. 3, and having end provided with "a tooth or shoulder 108 which coacts with a shoulder 109 on the rear arm of the pawl 103. 9
Upon each operation of the hammer lever, the link 105 is reciprocated and the hook 108 engaged with the shoulder 109 and the pawl.
103 moved on its pivot; and in case the pawl is engaged with one of the teeth 105, the rock shaft 44 and the card guide 3 are permitted to return to the left to their starting positions from the extra in or extra out position to which they have been shifted by hand, or to any intermediate position to whichthey have been automatically shifted, determined by the position of the ratchet wheel 49 and the shoulder 50 thereof. The link 105 is moved out of position to engage the shoulder 109 during downward movement of said link by a cam surface 110 on the link which coacts with the fixed shoulder or pin 111 provided on the bracket which supports the shaft 44 or any fixed part.
- The hook is forced into operativeposition by a spring 108 g In order to prevent the tooth of the pawl 103 from engaging the next tooth after itv has been disengaged from one tooth, or to prevent the pawl from engaging the second tooth due to overthrow of the card guide and disk 104, means is provided on the disk 104 for shifting or carrying the hook until the teeth have passed by the pawl 103, said means consisting of a cam 112 pivoted at 113 to the disk and movable slightly on its pivot between stops 114, said cam 112 having inclined surfaces 115 coacting with a pin 116 on the side of the hook of the pawl 103. Thus when the pawl 103 is released by its operating means 105, from the second tooth 104 the cam surface 115 will engage the pin 116 and carry the pawl 103 upwardly over the first tooth 104 When the disk 104 is being moved by the shaft 44 in a forward direction, the pin 116 engages one edge of the cam 112, see Fig. 8, and said cam is tilted on its pivot sufiiciently to incline the surface with which the pin 116 is engaged so that' the pawl will engage the first tooth when the handle is released or will ride over the point of the cam 112 into position to engage the second tooth 104 upon continued turning of the handle. During the movement of the pawl into engagement with the second tooth the cam moves on its pivot.
The operation of the cam 112 is the same during the retrograde movement of the disk 104, the pawl in one instance having to ride over the cam 112 to pass over the first to the second tooth and in the other instance, having to ride over the point of the cam 112 in order to clear the its upper The mouth of the card guide projects through the case as shown in Fig. 11 and carries a pointer 117 movable along a scale 118dwhich shows the position of the card gui e.
The hammer actuating mechanism includes a sleeve 120, a shiftable clutch 121 operated by a spring 122, and movable into and out of engagement with the'fixed clutch section 124 on the power shaft, all similar in construction and operation to the parts 57, 58,- 59 and heretofore described. The sleeve 120 is provided with an eccentric pin 125 which is connected by a link 126, see Figs. 1 and 2, to the hammer lever 12 by a pin-ancl-slot connection 127 so that upon each rotation of the sleeve 120 the hammer is reciprocated. The clutch section 121' is L and is moved out of operative position by a lever 132 pivoted at 133 to a lug 134 on the base 39, and carries a latch 135 coacting with the shoulder 136 on the detent 130, this latch having an extension 138 arranged to be engaged by the pin 128 as the clutch section 120 approaches, or almost completes, a revolution, in order to disengage the latch 135 from the shoulder 136 in the manner similar to the operation of the latch 7 8.- The lever 132 also carries a switch contact 139 cooperating with a terminal 140 which controls the operation or the actuation of the motor 41. This latch 135 is normally engaged with the shoulder 136 and is held in position to engage the shoulder by the spring 140 acting on the free or upper end of the lever 132. The lever-132 is actuated to move the detent 130 by means of the rock upper section by a detachable coupling 144.
In operation, when the card is placed in the card receiver, it depresses the card lock- 35 which actuates the horizontal elongated rock shaft or wing 36 which in turn actuates the vertical rock shaft 37, the latter actuating the rock arm 1 11, link 142, lever 132, causing the latch 135 to pull the detent 130 to the right, Fig. 2, thus releasing the shoulder 128 and causing the switch contact 139 5 to engage the terminal 140 so that the motor is energized to actuate the power shaft 10, at the same time permitting the clutch section 121 to engage thefixed clutch section 124 so that the sleeve 120 is operated causing the link 126 to operate the hammer 2.
As the sleeve rotates the shoulder 128 thereof engages the knock-off extension 138 of the latch 135, thus disengaging the latch 135 from the shoulder 136 permitting the detent 5 130 to move into operative position under,
or into the path of, the shoulder 128, which shoulder cams the clutch tothe right, disengaging it from the fixed clutch section 124;. The spring 140 moves the lever 132 to the left causing the latch 135 to again engage the shoulder 136 for the next operation and to move the switch contact 139 out of engagement with the terminals 140, thus breaking the motor circuit.
In operation, for regular registration, the workman merely places his card in the receiver and the operation of the mechanism is controlled thereby automatically except when it is necessary to make an extra in or extra out registration, and then the workman turns the handle 102 to the extra in or extra out position prior to placing his card in the receiver, and upon the placing of the card in the receiver the hammer 5 mechanism is operated and after the record normally disconnected from the shaft, and
time controlled means for shifting said part into connection with the shaft, substantially as and for the purpose described.

4. In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive records, means for effecting the shifting movement including a power shaft, power transmitting mechanism between the shaft and the shiftable element including a shiftable part normally disconnected from the shaft, time controlled mechanism for shifting said part into connection with the shaft, and means operated by the shaft for resetting the shiftable part after each operation thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other .a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive records, means for effecting the shifting movement including a normally idle motor, power transmitting mechanism between the motor and the shiftable element including a shiftable part normally disconnected from the motor, time controlled means for controlling the shifting of said part and the .actuation of the motor, and means operated by the motor for resetting the powertransmitting part and motor controlling means after each operation thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. In a time recorder, two elements, one a printing couple and the other a record sheet, support, one of said elements being shiftable relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive records, means for effecting the shifting movement including a normally idle motor, power transmitting mechanism between the motor and the shiftable element including a shiftable part normally disconnected from the motor, automatic means for operating the shiftable part, and means operated by the shiftable part for controlling the actuation of the motor, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7 In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive records, means for effecting the shifting movement including a normally idle motor, power transmitting mechanism between the motor and the shiftable element including a shiftable part normally disconnected from the motor, means operated by the shiftable part for controlling the energizing of the motor, and means operated by the motor for resetting the shiftable part after each operation thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable relatively to the other for positioning the same to make successive records, means for effecting the shifting movement including an electric motor, power transmitting means between the motor and the shiftable element, a switch for controlling the energizing of the motor, time controlled means connected to the switch to operate the same and thereby cause themotor to be energized, and means operated by the motor for shifting the time controlled means to open the switch after each'operation, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
9. In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a card-guide shiftable laterally relatively to the printing couple for positioning said elements to make successive records, means for shifting the card-guide including an actuating member, power transmitting mechanism between said member and the card-guide including a shiftable part normally disconnected from the actuating member, and time controlled means for shifting said part into connection With said member, substantially as and for the purpose described.
10. Ina time recorder, two elements, one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable relatively to the othg for positioning said elements for making successiverecords, time controlled means for controlling the shifting of the shiftable element, manually operated means for shifting said elements independently of the time controlled means in any position of the shiftable element and the time controlled means, and means for restoring the shiftable element to the position to which it has been automatically set by the time controlled means, after each operation of said manual means, substantially as and fonthe purpose described.
11. In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable laterally relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive records,
means for effecting said shifting movement including an actuating member, power transmitting mechanism between the actuating.
member and the shiftable member including driving and driven members, the driven member being connected to the shiftable element, time controlled means for controlling the operation of said mechanism, manually operated means for shifting said shiftable element independently of said power transmitting mechanism, and a spring for returning the driven member toward its starting position, substantially as and for the purpose described.

In a time recorder, two elements .one a printing couple and the other a recordsheet support, one of said elements being shiftable laterally relatively to the other for position ing said elements to make successive records, means for effecting such movement including power transmitting mechanism comprising driving and driven members, the driven member being connected to the shiftable element, a connection between the driving and driven members permitting the driven member to be actuated independently of the driving member in any position of the driving and driven members, areturning spring connected to the driven member for resisting actuation thereof, and manual means for actuating the driven member against the ac tion of its spring and relatively to the driving member, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
13. In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive records, means for effecting such shifting movement including power transmitting mechanism, said mechanism comprising a driven shaft connected to the shiftable element and a driving member loosely mounted on the shaft and having a shoulder, and the shaft having an arm arranged in the path of the shoulder whereby the shaft is actuated in a forward direction, time controlled means for controlling the actuation of the driving member, and a spring tending to return the shaft to its starting position and to hold the arm thereof against said shoulder, substantially as and for the purpose described.
14. In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive records, means for effecting such shifting movement including power transmitting mechanism, said mechanism comprising a driven shaft connected to the shiftable element and a driving member loosely mounted on the shaft and having a shoulder and the shaft having an arm arranged in the path of the shoulder whereby the shaft is actuated in a forward direction, time controlled'means for controlling the actuation of the driving member, a spring tending to return the shaft to its starting position and to hold the arm thereof against said shoulder, and manual means for actuating the shaft in a forward direction independently of the driving member, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
15. In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable laterally relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive records, means for efiecting such shifting movement including power transmitting mechanism, said mechanism comprising a driven shaft connected to the shiftable element, and a driving ratchet wheel loosely mounted on the shaft, the ratchet wheel and shaft being connected by means normally preventing movement of the shaft in a forward direction relatively to the ratchet wheel and for permitting forward movement' of the ratchet wheel and the shaft, a

In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a cardguide shiftable laterally relatively to the printing couple for positioning said elements to make successive daily records, means for shifting the shiftable element including a motor, an actuating member, power transmitting mechanism between the actuating member and the shiftable element, said mechanism including a shiftable part normally disconnected from the actuating member, and driving and driven members, the driven member belng connected to the shiftable element and the driving member being connected to the shiftable part to be member, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive records, time controlled means for controlling the shiftable element, means for holding the shiftable element in the position to which it has been shifted, manual means for shifting said element in a forward direction independently of the time controlled means, means for temporarily holding the shiftable element in the position in which it is moved by the manual means, time controlled means for releasing the first mentioned holding means at predetermined intervals, and means operable during each printing operation of the printing couple to release the second mentioned holding means, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
20. In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable .relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive records, means for controlling the shifting of the shiftable element including a rock shaft provided with means connected to the shiftable element, a disk on the rock shaft provided with the detent out of operative position, and a spring acting to return the rock shaft to its starting posltion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
21. In a time recorder, two elements, one a printing couple and the other a card-guide, one of said elements being shiftable laterally relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive records, the card-guide having a movable abutment, time controlled means for shifting the abutment periodically, time controlled means for controlling the shifting of the shiftable element including driving and driven members, one being connected to the shiftable element, a detent for holding the shiftable element in the position to which it has been shifted, and means operated by the time controlled means actuating the abutment, for moving the detent out of operative position, substantially as and for the purpose described.

In a time recorder, two elements, one a printing couple andthe other a record sheet support, one of said elements being shiftable laterally relatively to the other for position-- ing said elements to make successive records, means for effecting such shifting movement including power transmitting mechanism comprising a driven rock shaft connected to the shiftable element, a driving member loosely mounted on the rock shaft, a connection between the driving member and the rock shaft permitting the shaft to be actuated in a forward direction independently of the driving member, a spring acting on the shaft to rotate the same in a retrograde direction, manual means" for actuating the shaft in a forward direction independently of the driving member, a disk mounted on the rock shaft and formed with ratchet teeth, a detent coacting with the ratchet teeth of the disk and arranged to hold the rock shaft in the position to which it is moved by the manual means, time controlled means for actuating the driving member intermittently, a detent 'for normally holding the driving member from retrograde movement, time controlled means for moving the last mentioned detent out of operative position at regular intervals, and means operated by the printing operation of the printing couple for releasing the first mentioned detent, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a record sheet support, one being shiftable laterally relatively to the other forjpositioning said elements to make successive records and one of the members of the printing couple being movable relatively to the other to make a record, means for shifting the shiftable element and for actuating the movable member of the printingcouple including a driving shaft, a train of power transmitting mecha-' nism between the shaft and the shiftable element, and a second train between the shaft and said movable member of the printing-couple, said trains being normally disconnected from the shaft, time controlled means for connecting the first mentioned train and the power shaft, manually operated means for connecting the other train to the power shaft, and means operated by the power shaft for disconnecting said trains after each operation thereof, substantially v operable to shift said train into connection a with the power shaft and to control the actuation of the motor, a second train of power transmitting mechanism between the shaft and. the movable member of the printing couple, the secondtrain being normally disconnected from the shaft, and manually operated means for connecting the second train and the shaft and controlling the actuation'ofthe motor, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a time recorder, a printing couple including a member movable for effecting the making of a record, a card-guide be tween the members of the printing couple to support a card in position to be printed on by said couple, an actuating member, power transmitting mecha ism between the actuating member and the movable member movlng 1n the guide to connect the power transmitting mechanism and the actuating member, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
27. In a time recorder, a printing couple I including a member movable for effecting the making of a record, a card-guide, an actuating member, power transmitting mechanism between the actuating member and the movable member of the couple, said mechanism being normally disconnected from the actuating member, means operated by the card when moving in the guide to connect the power transmitting mechanism and the actuating member, and means operated by the actuating member during each operation thereof to disconnect said mecha nism from the actuating member, substantially as and for the purpose described.
28. In a time recorder, two elements one a printing couple and the other a card-guide, one of said elements being shiftable laterally relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive daily records, one of the members of the printing couple being movable to effect the making of record, a movable abutment in the card guide, time controlled means for shifting said abutment periodically, a power shaft, a train of power transmitting mechanism between the shaft and the shiftable element, a second train of power transmitting mechanism between the shaft and the movable member of the printing couple, said trains being normally disconnected from the power shaft, time controlled means for controlling the connection of the first train to the power shaft whereby the shiftable element is shifted laterally step by step, a detent for holding the shiftable element in its shifted osition, a spring for normally returning the shiftable element to its starting position, a connection between the first-mentioned time controlled means and the detent for moving the detent out of operative position,-
means arranged in the guide to be operated by the card and effect the shifting of the second mentioned train into connection with the power shaft, and means operafid by the power shaft for disconnecting said trains after each operation thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

one of said elements being shiftable laterally relatively to the other for positioning said elements to make successive daily records, one of the members of the printing couple being movable to effect the making of a record, a movable abutment in the cardguide, time controlled means for shifting said abutment periodically, a power shaft, a train of power transmitting mechanism between the shaft and the shiftable element, a second train of power transmitting mechanism between the shaft and the movable member of the printing couple, said trains being normally disconnected from the power shaft, time controlled means for controlling the connection of the first train to the power shaft whereby the shiftable element is shifted laterally step by step,a detent for holding the shiftable element in its shifted position, a spring for normally returning the shiftable element toward its starting position, connections between the first mentioned time controlled means and the detent for moving the detent out of operative position, means carried by the card abutment and arranged in the ath of the card to be operated thereby and e ect the shifting of the second mentioned train into connection with the power shaft, manual means for shifting the shiftable element independently of its actuating means, a detent for holding said element in the position it has been shifted by the manual means, and means operated by the second mentioned train for releasing the last-named detent, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
30. In a time recorder, the combination of a power shaft, movable elements actuated by the shaft, a train of power mechanism between the shaft and each movable element, each train including a shiftable clutch member normally disconnected from the power shaft, means for shifting one clutch section into connection with the shaft, and other means operable independently of the former means for shifting the other section into connection with the shaft, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
