IMPROVEMENT IN CHANDELIERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,114, dated October 17, 1871.

To all whom it may concern.:

Beit known that I, EDGAR M. SMITH, of the city, county, and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Drop or Center-Light Slide- Chandelier; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawing making' a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents in perspective a chandelier having my improved center-slide drop-light applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section through the same.

Similar letters, where they occur in the sepa rate figures, denote like parts of the xture in the drawing.

My invention consists in the manner in which I have arranged a sliding central drop-light in connection with a chandelier.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawing.

A represents a chandelier of any ordinary construction, to which is connected a sliding central drop-light, B, as follows: Above the canopy a of the chandelier are attached two rods, b c,one of which, (as, forinstance, the one 0,) at least, should be a gas-way or gas-pipe; the other one not necessad e are pipes or tubes, which move up and down on the rods b o, and are packed, as at f, so as to make a gas-light sliding connection. The two pipes or tubes d e may diverge near their lower ends, and then be united into one, and a gas-burner, g, arranged at or near their junction.- By this arrangement there is no pipe immediately over the drop-light burner, and no packing or packed joints to be injured thereby. There being two supporting-rods, for the drop-light to move upon, there is less swaying and vibration, and consequently less wearing of the packing. Besides this, both of the pipes or tubes d e pass through guides i i, arranged on the ring j oi' the chandelier and thus materially steady the drop-light as it is moved or slid up and down on the rods b c. Connecting the pipe or rods b c above the canopy a leaves more room underneath the canopy for greater extension of movement of the sliding or drop-light, by the double-geared chain k and weight l, said drop or slidinglight having a capacity to range up and down double or nearly double the distance that the weight l moves up and down. One end of eachoi' the chains la is fastened to a permanent portion of the chandelier, as at 1; thence they pass down and around the pulleys 2, respectively, on the weight or counterpoise l; thence they pass upward and over the pulleys 3, respectively, arranged in or over the canopy a; and thence descend; and the other ends are fastened to the sliding drop-light at 1. The weight or counterpoise moves up and down on a guide-rod, m, and a shield, n, is put on the lower end of the guide-rod tol protect the weight and rod from tarnishing. The rod m, at its upper end, is attached to a permanent part of the chandelier.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with a chandelier, a sliding center or drop-light that moves and is supported upon two guide-rods,- c d, one of which, at least, shall be a gas-pipe, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In combination with the chandelier and sliding drop-light moving' and guided by at least two rods or pipes, as described, thel compound gearing and weight and auxiliary guides t' z and m, as and for the purpose set forth.
