TRIMMING MECHANISM FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT RoN'rKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trimming Mechanisms for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying e drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in seam-trimmers for sewing machines and has for its object to. provide a construction and arrangement of coacting cutting elements better adapted to the requirements of seam and edge trimming, together with improved means for actuating the trimming element and for controlling its action and inaction at the will of the operator, and to effect this the trimmer element comprises an open ring in which one or both of the walls of said opening comprise cutting members, said ring being mountedto oscillate in a guide ring having an opening one of thewalls of which comprise a ledger-blade, the trimmerring being operatively connectedwith the actuating mechanism of the sewing machine through a chain of connections including coacting elements capable of manual control during the seam formation, to effect or discontinue the trimming operation.
Referring to thedrawings whiclrform a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a front side elevation of a sewing machine equipped with the present invention; Fig. 2a front plate beingremoved to better illustrate certain of the elements, later to be referred to, important to the means for actuating. the present stitch-forming and cloth-feeding mechanism; Fig. 3 a plan view of the front end portion of the sewing machine bed-plate shown in the previous figures; Fig. 4: a view in elevation of the present improved trimming mechanism corresponding to that of Fig. 3, detached from the sewing machine, the trimmer-ring, its bracket and retaining plate being shown in section; Fig. 5 an elevation, partly in full lines and partly in 50 section, of the elements comprising the chain of connections arranged betweenv the trimmer ring and its operating eccentric carried by the main-shaft looking in the direction indicated by the arrow X, Fig. 4; Figs. 6, 7,

The present invention is herein shown and will be described in connection with one'variety of Singer universal feed sewing machine, substantially the same as is represented by United States Patent No. 989,538, of April 11, 1911, to A. Rontke, andonly such reference will be made to the well known parts herein illustrated as is deemed sufficient for a proper understanding of its appiication. I
Referring to the figures, 1 represents the. sewing machine bed-plate upon which is mounted the bracket armfcomprising the standard 2 and arm bracket 3, 4 the main or needle-bar actuating shaft provided at its rear end withthe band wheel 5 and at its opposite end with the shaft flange 6, 7 the needle thread take-up operated from the main-shaft in a manner common to the present machine, 8 the spring depressed clothpresser carrying bar provided at its lower end with a cloth- presser 9 and 10 the needlethread tension device. i 5.
' 11 represents an oscillatory feed actuating frame mounted upon oppositely arranged pintle bearings comprising the stud 12. threaded into the armbracket and pin 13 secured by screw lfi: in the arm 15 of the oscillating frame, the tapered portion 16 of the pin entering an opening 17 of like shape in the bed-plate 1, said framebeing opera-. tively connected with the main shaft 1 by pin 18, eccentric strap 19 and eccentric 20', the latter secured to the side of the belt pulley 21, as in Patent No. 989,538 previously referred to. y
22 denotes a belt for transmitting, through the pulleys 21 and 23, rotary movements to the looper actuating shaft 24 carrying the loop-taker 25.
26 represents the needle-bar operatively connected with the main-shaft through the stud collar 27 and link, 28, thelatter journaled at its upper end on a stud 29 (shown in dotted lines only, Fig. 3) rigidly secured in the flange 6, said needle-bar being mounted to move vertically in suitable hearings in the lugs 30 and 31 formed integral with the arm 32 of the frame 11. Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. In a seam-trimmer for sewing machines, the combination with a stitch-formin mechanismand means for-presenting a fa%ric to the action of the latter, of a circular guide-frame supporting a ledger-blade, a trimmer-blade mounted to oscillate about the axis of said guide-frame, and connections for operatively connecting said trimmer-blade with the actuating mechanism of the sewing machine.
2. In a seam-trimmer for sewing machines, the combination with a stitch-form'- in mechanism and means for presenting a fabric to the action of the latter, of a circular guide-frame supporting a ledger-blade, a trimmer-blade mounted to oscillate about the axis of said guide-frame, and connections for operatively connecting said trimmer-blade with the actuating mechanism of the sewing machine, said connections including means efiective, at the will of the operator, to place into or out of action said trimmer-blade.
3. In a seam-trimmer for sewing machines, the combination with a stitch-forming mechanism and means for presenting a fabric to the action of the latter, of a circular guide-frame provided with a guide-ring having a ledger-blade, a trimmer-ring mounted to oscillate in said guide-ring and provided with a trimmer-blade, and connections for operatively connecting said trimmer-ring with the actuating mechanism of the sewing machine.
4. In a seam-trimmer for sewing machines, the combination with a stitch-forming mechanism and means for presenting a fabric to the action of the latter, of a circular guide-frame provided with a guide-ring having a ledger-blade, a trimmer-ring mounted to oscillate in said guide-ring and provided with a trimmer-blade, and connections for operatively connecting said trimmer-ring with the actuating mechanism of the sewing machine, said connections including means effective, at the will of the operator. to place into or out of action said trimmer-blade.
5. In a seam trimmer for sewing machines, the combination with a stitch-forniing mechanism and means for presenting a fabric to the action of the latter, of a circular guide-frame supporting a ledgerblade, a trimmer-blade mounted to oscillate about the axis of said guide-frame, and connections for operatively connecting said trimmer-blade with the actuating mechanism of the sewing machine, said connections including means effective, at the will of the operator, to place into or out of action said trimmer-blade, and means for registering said trimmer-blade out of its field of effective action when disconnected from the sewing machine actuating mecha nism.
6. In a seam trimmer for sewing machines, the combination with means for presenting a fabric to the action of a stitchforming mechanism, of a circularguideframe supporting a ledger-blade, a trimmerblade mounted to oscillate about the axis of said guide-frame, and connections for operatively connecting said trimmer-blade with the actuating mechanism of the sewing machine including an eccentric, a trimmer-actuating bar, a trimmer-actuating link, a latch and latch retainer, said latch capable of manual adjustment, during the stitching operation, to effect or discontinue the triniming operation.
7. In a seam trimmer for sewing machines, the combination with a sewing machine bed-plate, a stitch-forming mechanism and means for presenting a fabric to the latter, of a circular trimmer guide-frame suspended in an opening in said bed-plate and provided with coacting cutting elements, means for actuating one of said elements and a retaining plate for holding said cutting elements against accidental dis placement,the opening in said bed-plate acting, in connection with said trimmer guideframe and retaining plate,as a chute to direct the trimmed oif portion of the fabric below the bed-plate.
8. In a seam trimmer for sewing machines, the combination with a stitch-forming mechanism and means for presenting a fabric to the action of the latter, of a trimmer-frame comprising a trimmer guide frame and securing bracket, said guideframe provided with a circular bearing into which is mounted a guide-ring provided with a ledger-blade, a trimmer-ring provided with a trimmer-blade mounted to oscillate in said guide-ring, a retaining plate for holding said trimmer-ring against accidental displacement, and connections for operatively connecting said trimmer-ring with the actuating mechanism of the sewing machine.
