Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIUS R. BLUMEN- BERG, a citizen of the I'nited States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Casting Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Type casting machines, as generally constructed, although capable of properly casting the type, have necessitated a number of operations requiringthe time and attention of an operator, so that even a rapid and experienced operator cannot cast a large number oft pe in a short space of time.
This invention relates to a type casting machine wherein the various elements are so related to one another and connected for simultaneous operation that the movement of a single lever on the part of an operator serves to remove the core and die from the mold and transfer the mold to a point convenient for access to remove the casting therefrom.
It is an object of this invention to construct a type casting machine wherein a mold is mounted upon a slidable table and with a core for insertion within the mold and slidably mounted for withdrawal there from prior to movement of. said mold with the table.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a type casting machine having a mold adapted to be closed by a die member and a core member, said die member and core member being movable away from the mold simultaneously, and prior to the movement of said mold away fromthe metal pouring means.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a hollow mold adjustably mounted upon a traveling table and with a die member and core member slidably mounted to register with said mold to receive molten metal therein, and after the casting is made,
simultaneously actuatable by suitable levers out of register with said mold to permit to an accessible point for removal of the casting.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a device wherein a hollow member affording a mold is adapted to be closed on its upper end by a suitable die member registering therewith, and at its lower'end by a core member projecting thereinto, and after the molten metal, allowed to flow into said mold, has hardened, said upper and lower members may be simultaneously drawn away from one another, permitting subsequent movement of the mold to a convenient point of access to remove the casting therefrom.
It is further an object of this invention to construct a rapid molding machine wherein the pattern and core .for the mold are introduced therein by suitable mechanism for the purpose, and after the casting is made, are instantly withdrawn therefrom prior to movement of the mold to a place for removal of the casting.
It is finally an object of this invention to construct a molding device wherein a traveling mold suitably gated is adapted to be moved to a point to receive molten'metal therein and with coring means and type forming means each forming a part of said mold, but actuatable out of engagement therewith prior to the movement of the mold away from the molten metal supply.
The invention (in a preferred form) is hereinafter more fully described and defined in the accompanying drawings and specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the machine, with parts in section and parts in elevation, and showing the'mold closed to receive the molten metal therein. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. with parts omitted. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. tis a fragmentary detail showing the under surface of the car; riage for the die member and the clamping means thereon. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail of the top surface of the mold members. showing the gate leading to the hollow portion. Fig. 6 is a central vertical section taken through a type casting made by the machine. Fig. 7 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 8 is an end view of said type member.
As shown in the drawings, the machine comprises a table top 1, supported upon legs 2, affording a standard upon which is slidably mounted in suitable grooves for the purpose a table 3. The hollow mold member is formed by a pair of right angled adjustable blocks 4:.and5, which are supported and clamped upon the blocks 6 and 7, respectively, by means of relatively long machine screws 8. Said blocks 6 and 7, are slotted, and projecting through said slots and threading into the table 3, are machine screws 9, thus permitting adjustment of said blocks. An upstanding rib 10, is provided on said table 3, and is apertured and threaded to receive clamping bolts 11, therethrough adapted to bear on said block 6, to assist in maintaining the same in proper position on the table. A pair of vertlcal guide elements 12, are threaded into the top 1, of the standard of the machine and serve to guide a vertically moving standard carriage 13, thereon. A hollow tubular member 14, is threaded in an aperture in said carriage 13,
and contains a pushing spring 15, normally bearing against a plate 16, in the recessed portion of a clamping plate 17, secured on the under surface of said traveling carriage 13. Lugs 18, are provided on said clamping plate and threaded therethrough are clampmg screws or bolts 19, adapted to engage clamping blocks 20, which in turn grip tightly against a die member 21, which is adapted to close over the upper open end of the mold formed by said blocks 4 and 5. The purpose of the spring thrust plate 16, is to insure clamping of the die member properly between the blocks 20, said plate acting to thrust the die. member outwardly from the clamping plate 17, so that the outer surface of the former may be ositioned flush with the outer surfaces 0 the clamping blocks 20.
As shown, the block 5, is provided with a gate 22, which leads into the hollow mold formed by said blocks 4. and 5. at the upper end thereof, adjacent the die member, when said latter member is in register with the mold. The core for the mold comprises a relatively long member 23, which is tapered at its end 23, to permit easy withdrawal from the casting when the same has been formed, andmechanisms are provided and connected to said core member for moving the same into and out of engagement with the mold at the proper intervals.v For this purpose, .thelower end of said core member is recessed and a link 24, is pivotally connected therein with the lower end thereof pivoted to a link 25, which is in turn pivoted to a lug 26, projecting downwardly from the under surface of said top 1. An actuating lever 27, is pivoted to one of the rear legs 2, of the machine, and is provided with a yoke 28, engaged to said link 25, by means of a pin29, whereby actuation of said lever 27, will cause movement of said lever 25. Owing to the fact that the link connection 24, be-
tween the lever 25, and the core member, is
at a greater'distance from the center of rotation of said lever 25, than the yoke 28, of the lever 27 a small movement of said actuating lever 27 will cause a relatively great movement of said core member, which, as shown, moves' longitudinally through recesses provided for the purpose in the top 1, and traveling table 3, and between said blocks 6 and 7, whereby the tapered portion of said core member may be projected into the mold. Mechanism is also provided for simultaneously moving the traveling carriage 13, with movement of said core members, and for this purpose a pair of upright supporting standards 30, one on each side of the table top 1, are provided, which have journaled therein a shaft 31, secured on the outer ends of which are levers or arms 32, the slotted ends of which engage on studs 33, secured in the ends of said traveling carriage 13. A crank 34, is secured to said shaft 31, at substantially a central point thereon and linked thereto and to said actuating lever 27, is a connecting rod or bar 35, which transmits movement from said actuating lever 27 to said crank and thence by means of said shaft 31,'to the arms 32. Accordingly, when the actuating lever 27, is moved downwardly, thus causing a retract1on or lowering movement of the core member 23, owing to the link and lever connec- .tions, said traveling carriage 13, is con, strained to move upwardly on the guide members 12.
Molten metal for the machine is supplied 00 from any suitable source, as, for instance. from a container 36., provided with a valve 37,. and communicating with said gate 22 by means of a spout 38. For the purpose of removing the mold after the introduction 10a of metal thereto and the casting of the same,
a bell crank is pivoted to the table top 1, on
a pivot 39, and with one arm 40, thereof slotted and engaging a pin 41, secured in a lug on the end of said traveling table 3, and 110 with the other arm 42, of said bell crank projecting outwardly and adapted to be engaged by one or the other of pins 43 and 44, respectively, secured in said connecting rod or bar 35.
A spring 45, is secured to the floor or other support for the device at one of its ends, and at the other thereof is secured to said actuating lever 27 to assist in the downward movement thereof, and in the raising 120 of the traveling carriage 13.
Reference to Fig. 4 will disclose a means of adjusting the die member 21, between the clamping blocks 20, whereby the same may be made to properly register with the mold.
For this purpose a relatively long wedge member 46, engages between said die memberand an upstanding plate or lug 47, secured on the block 5, so that "nward movement of said wedge member -16, will serve to move said die member between ,said clamping blocks 20.
The operation is as follows: It is evident from the description that the three movable members, the traveling carriage 13, the movable table 3, and the core member 23, are
simultaneously actuatable in proper se-.
quence of movement owing. to the link and lever connections, therebetween. Owing to the pins 43, and 44, secured in the connecting rod 35, whereby the bell crank for actuating the traveling table 3, is moved it is apparent that the traveling carriage 13, which supports 'the die member, will be moved upwardly and that the core member 23, will be drawn downwardly away from the mold, before the movement of the, levers is transmitted to the table to Thus as the operator actuates the lever 2 downwardly, the traveling carriage 13, carrying the die member will be raised upon its guides 12, and the core member 23, will be retracted downwardly, and subsequently the traveling table 3, will move towardv the operator, carrying the casting in the mold therewith, and of course by means of tongs or other devices the casting may be readily removed from the device. An upward actuation of the lever 27, again serves to' bring the elements into proper relation for casting another type character.
As shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8, the typecharacter 48, as formed has a portion of metal projecting therefrom and designated by the reference character 49, which is due to the gate leading to the mold, and this portion of metal must of course be severed from the casting. In order to guide the core element 23, in its movement upwardly into the mold a guide plate 50, adjustably mount- 1 ed in the traveling table 3, on a screw 51, is
provided in the aperture through said table and opposite thereto is a spring pressed pin 52, which,.as the core element 23, projected upwardly to said aperture 1n the table top, impels said core element into contact with the guide plate, to insure proper positioning of the same.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the prlnciples of this invention. I therefore do not purpose'limiting the patent granted otherwise mold on said table, die and core members respectively inser'ti'ble in the mold, and
mechanism for movingsaid members out of engagement with said mold prior to the movement of said mold carrying table.

mold forming members adjustably clamped on said table, and die and core members respectively actuatable into and out of engagement with the mold.

said table for withdrawing said core and die members from the mold and retracting said table. .and mold from the source of-metal supply.
5..In a device of the class described mold forming means, die and core members respectively 'actuatable into engagement therewith, a'slidable support for said mold, and connecting mechanism for actuating said respective members and said slidable support to permit removal of a casting from the mold.

In a device of the class described adjustable members for forming a mold, slidable means suppdrting the same, a die member adapted to fit within and close one end of said mold, adjustable clamping means therefor, a core member adapted to close the other end of said mold, and mechanism for moving said core member and said die member into and out of engagement with said mold and for moving said mold carryin means.
. In a' device of the class described a table top, a table slidable in grooves therein,
in said table top, a carriage slidable thereon, adjustable clamping means on said carriage, a die member secured therein, mechanism for adjusting the same into proper register with the mold, a core member for said mold, and connected mechanism for actuating said carriage and table.
8. In a. molding machine of the class described members adjustably mounted to form a mold, movable core and die members forming a part thereof adapted to close the bottom and the top of said mold respectively, and means for Withdrawing said core and die members from the mold after the metal has been cast therein.
9. In a molding machine of the class described adjustable members forming a mold,
movably mounted means adapted to close the top end,-and means adapted to close the bottom end of said mold, and operative connections between said means for effecting a simultaneous movement thereof.
10. In a molding machine of the class described a mold open at its top and bottom, means adapted to be projected toward one another into said respective open top end, and means adapted to close the bottom end of the mold to close the same, and operative connections between said means for retracting the same away from one another and from said mold after an object has been cast therein.
11. In a molding machine of the class described a plurality of horizontally and vertically adjustable members adapted to be moved into engagement with one another to form a mold, a slidable support for said horizontally adjustable members, and operative connections between said members for separating said vertically adjustable members one from another after an object has been cast in said mold.
12. In a molding machine of the class described a plurality of adjustable blocks adapted to form a mold, members slidably engaged in said mold, operative connections for moving said members into cooperative relation with said mold, and means operating in proper sequence to efl'ect a separation of said members after an object has been cast in said mold.
