To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY K. BENTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Babbitting-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be used on a lathe for the purpose of babbitting connecting rods and other articles, and for the purpose of reaming out the babbitting after it has been poured into place.
' The invention aims to provide novel means for supporting the connecting rod or other article while it is being babbitted and out.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for centering the connecting rod or other article.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the descrlptlon proceeds, the inventlon resldes 1n the combina- 'tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction herelnafter descrlbed 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the means whereby the connecting rod is supported; Fig. 5 1s a fragmental plan view showing the closure members which close up the ends of the opening in the article which is to be babbitted; Fig. 6 is a sectional view illustrating the shaft whereon the 'babbitt holding closures are mounted; Fig. 7 is an elevation showing a modified form of holding head, parts being broken away; Fig. 8 is an elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 7 Fig. 9 is an elevation showing, essentially, the clamp whereby the centering member is held in place; Fig. 10 is an elevation showing the clamp; Fig. 11 is a sectional detail showing a slight modification in the babbitt holding closure members. It is contemplated that the device formlng the subject matter of this application shall be used in connection with a lathe of any approved type, embodying a head stock 1 including a chuck 2, a tail stock 3 comprising a center 4, and a tool post 5, the latter having an opening 6, a set screw 7 bemg threaded into the tool post 5 to cooperatewith the opening 6.
In carrying out the present invention there is provided a support 8 in the form of a bar, the same extending through the openlng 6 in the tool post 5 and being heldin place by the set screw 7. Mounted to move for adjustment on the support 8 is a slide 9 which may be held in adjusted positions by means of a set screw 65 threaded into the slide and engaging the support 8. Projectmg from' the slide 9 is an arm 10 carrying a Washer 11 cooperating with a nut 1:2 threaded onto the arm. By means of securmg elements 14, a head 15 is detachably held to one end of the support 8, the head 15 having a slot 16 receiving for vertical sliding adjustment, bolts 17, each of which is provided with an abutment l8 and a nut 19, the construction being suchthat when the nuts 19 are tightened up, the head 15 is bound between the nuts 19 and the abutments 18, it thus being possible to adjust the bolts 17 vertically with respect to each other and vertically independently of each other. The bolts 17 pass through a slot 21 necting rod '64, the opening of which is to be babbitted, and the operation of positioning the connecting rod 64: will now be described.-
The slide 9 is properly positioned on the support 8 to correspond with the length of the connecting rod, the slide being retained in its adjusted position by tightening up the set screw 64. The arm 10 which projects from the slide 9 is passed through the opening in one end of the connecting rod 64, the other end of the connecting rod (which contains the opening to be babbitted) is gripped between the head 15 and the clamp plate 20, the nuts 22 on the bolts 17 being tightened up, so that one end of the connecting rod 64 is bound and held between the head 15 and the clamp plate 20. The rider 23 is disposed opposite to the connecting rod and the set screw 24 is advanced until it engages the connecting rod, an additional hold upon the connecting rod thus being secured.
The foregoing operation presupposes that the connecting rod 64 which is to be babbitted has been securely arranged in the position which it will assume during the babbitting and boring operations. However, before the connecting rod is finally clamped in place, the opening in the connecting rod which is to be babbitted must be centered properly, and the mechanism for centering the connecting rod will now be described.
The invention comprises a shaft 25 held by the chuck 2 and the center 4, the shaft 25 being provided intermediate its ends with a transverse opening 26 adapted to receive a cutter 27 whereby, after the babbitting operation has been carried out, the Babbitt metal may be reamed or bored out to define an opening of the required size. The shaft 25 is supplied with an axial passage 28 in which is longitudinally movable a rod 29, one end of which bears against the cutter 27. In the shaft 25 there is formed a transverse slot 30 and in the slot 30 is disposed a cross pin 31 movable in the slot longitudinally of the shaft 25. Intermediate its ends, the cross pin 31 bears on one end of the rod 29, the exposed ends of the cross pin 31 being engaged by a nut 32, threaded onto the shaft 25. Obviously, by tightening up the nut 32, the cross pin 31 and the rod 29 will be advanced, the latter bearing against the cutter 27 and holding the cutter in place. The invention comprises a closure member 33, so called because it closes up one end of the opening to be babbitted, the closure member 33 being mounted on the shaft 25 and embodying a centering cone 34. The cone 34 is provided with longitudinal slots 35 adapted to receive the protruding ends of the cutter 27, the said closure member including a tubular stem 36 surrounding the shaft 25. Slidable on the tubular steam 36 of the closure member 33 is an opposed closure member 37 embodying a hub .38.,
The position of the closure member 33 longitudinally of the shaft 25 may be adjusted by manipulating a set screw 39 threaded into the closure member and adapted to engage the shaft, as shown best in Fig.5. The position of the closure member 37 with respect to the closure member 33 may be adjusted by means of a similar set screw 40 mounted on the slide 9 and between the head 15 on the clamp plate 20, but before the connecting rod has been rigidly secured in position, the closure member 33 is slipped onto the shaft 25, the cone 34 entering one end of the opening which is to be babbitted, the opening thus being centered with respect to the shaft 25. After the opening in the connecting rod has been centered in the manner hereinbefore set forth, the nuts 22, the set screw 24 and the set screw are tightened up, and thus the connecting rod or other object is so held that the opening which is to be babbitted is centered properly with respect to the shaft 25. The closure member 33 is then turned end for end and is mounted on the shaft 25 as shown in Fig. 5, the closure member 37 being mounted on the tubularstem 36 of the closure member 33. The circumferential flanges 41 are brought up closely against opposed faces of the connecting rod, the set screws 40 and 39, are tightened up and the device is in position to begin the babbitting operation. The babbitt is poured through the notches 43 and thus the connecting rod 64 is babbitted in a manner which will be understood from Fig. 11, although that view discloses a slight modificae tion, to be described hereinafter. After the babbitting operation has been carried out,
the closures 33 and 37 are removed from the shaft 25, the shaft 25 is rotated, and the cut ter 27 operates to ream or bore out the babbitt in the opening in the connecting rod.
In the modification shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the head 15 is dispensed with, this form of the invention being of use where comparatively small casting, such as shown at in Fig. 9 are to be babbitted. The modified head is denoted by the numeral 44 and is provided with elongated slots 45. The head 44 includes extensions 46 united by the se curingelements 14 with the support 8 as before. Link-shaped clamps 47 are provided, and bolts 48 lie in the slots 45 of the head 44 and in the slots 51 of the clamps 47, the
heads 49 of the bolts engaging the member 44 and the nuts 50 on the bolts coacting with the clamps 47. The manner .in which the parts 45 and 47 hold the casting which is to be babbitted, will be understood clearly from Figs. .7 and 8. It may be desirable at times to hold the centeringmember in cooperation with the casting 70, as shown in Fig. 9, before the nuts 50 havebeen tightened up, and under such circumstances, re-
course is had to a yoke 60 having a notch 61 whereby the yoke may be straddled onto the shaft 25. In the ends of the yoke 60 are formed slots 75 receiving for adjustment toward and away from each other, hook bolts 62 adapted to engage the casting 70, there being nuts 63 threaded onto the bolts and coacting with the yoke 60. If the opening in the connecting rod is small, then the tubular stem 36 shown in Fig. 6 may be dispensed with, one closure member being denoted by the numeral 54, and the other closure member being denoted by the numeral 52, there being a set screw 53 carried by the closure member 52 and coacting withthe shaft 25, the closure member 56 carrying a set screw 55 which also coacts with the shaft 25. The closure member 54 is provided with a centering cone 56, shown in operative relation to the casting in Fig. 9, the closure member having been turned end for end, in Fig. 11, and having been applied to the casting or connecting rod properly to carry out the babbitting operation. The recesses in the ends of the closure members 52 and 5% are indicated at 57, the cone 56 on the closure member 54L being slotted as shown at 59 to receive the cutter 27.
The advantage in slotting the cone 34 as shown at 35 and in slotting the cone '56 as shown at 59 to receive the cutter 27 lies in the fact that by this construction, the closure members 33 and 3f may be backed off from the object which is being babbitted, without removing the cutter 27. After the bite of the cutter 27 has been adjusted, and after the cutter has been set by means of the rod 29 and the nut 32, the cutter need not be loosened when it is desired to move back the closure 33.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a babbitting machine, the combination with the head stock, the tail stock and the tool post of a lathe, of means carried by the tool post for supporting the article to be babbitted; a shaft carried by the head stock and the tail stock; and closures for the opening in the article to be babbitted, the closures being carried by the shaft.
2. In a babbitting machine, the combination with the head stock, the tail stock and the tool post of a lathe, of means carried by the tool post for supporting the article to be babbitted; a shaft carried by the head stock and the tail stock; and closures for the opening in the article to be babbittted, the closures being mounted on the shaft, one of said closures being reversible on the shaft and being provided upon one side with means for centering the article to be babbitted.
3. In a babbitting machine, the combination with the head stock, the tool post and the tail stock of a lathe, of means carried by the tool post for supporting the article to be babbitted; a shaft carried by the head stock and the tail stock; closures for the opening in the article to be babbitted, and carried by the shaft; and a cutter carried by the shaft and adapted to operate on the babbitted article, the closures being removable from the shaft to permit access to the babbitted article by the cutter.

5. In a babbitting machine, a rotatable shaft; a pair of closures for the article to be babbitted and carried by the shaft; and a cutter adapted to operate upon the babbitted article and carried by the shaft, the
closures being removable from the shaft to permit the cutter to have access to the babbitted article.
6. In a babbitting machine, a supporting rod; a.pair of closures for the opening in the article to be babbitted, one of the closures being provided upon one side with means for centering the article to be babbitted, said closure being adapted for end for end reversal on the rod to dispose the centering means toward or away from the article to be babbitted.
7. In a babbitting machine, a rotatably mounted shaft; a pair of closure members for the opening in the article to be babbitted; a cutter carried by the shaft and adapted to operate on the babbitted article, the closures being removable to permit the cutter to have access to the babbitted article, one of the closures having an opening receiving the cutter, whereby said closure may be retracted and advanced independently of the position of the cutter on the shaft; and means housed within the contour of the shaft and engaging the cutter tohold the cutter to the shaft.

In a babbitting machine, a rotatably mounted shaft; a pair of closure members for the opening in the article to be babbitted and mounted on the shaft; a cutter carried by the shaft and adapted to operate on the babbitted article, one of the closure members being provided with an opening adapted to receive the cutter, whereby the said closure may be retracted independently of the position of the cutter with respect to the shaft; a rod engaging the cutter; a cross pin movable longitudinally of the shaft and my own, I have hereto affixed my signature engaging the rod; and a nut threaded onto 1n the presence of Witnesses.
