To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. DAVIS, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident.
of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elevator-Door-Operating Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention pertains to elevator-door operating devices, and is particularly applicable to the type of elevator closure in which the doors slide away from one another, to leave a central opening, when the same are opened.
It is the principal object of my invention to improve upon the devices heretofore employed for causing one of the doors to move in one direction when the other is moved in the opposite direction.
It is another object of my invention to provide a simple, economical, efficient and compact device for opening one elevator door from another, to cause such door to be moved forward and backward whenever the other door is similarly moved. And other and further objects of my invention will become clear from the specification taken in connection with the annexed claim.
By way of example, I have described in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawing, a form of elevator-door operating device constructed in ac cordance with my invention. Changes, however, may be made in theconstruction shown and described, without exceeding the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front View of an elevator doorway, provided with a door operating device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan of the door operating device; Fig. 3is an enlarged front view of the center sprockets; and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan of the same, the section being taken at the'line aa of Fig. 3.
Throughout the following specification, like reference characters indicate like parts in referring to the several figures of the accompanying drawing.
Referring now to the drawing, 10 and 10 designate a pair of elevator doors, each having hangers 11 carrying rollers 12. These rollers run on a track 13 which is provided at the top-of the doorway; so that,:by moving the doors 10 and, 10 away from each other, the same are opened, and are likewise closed by moving them toward each other.
Secured to the door frame, at or near the center thereof, is a bracket 13 in which is mounted a spindle 14, which carries a pair of sprockets 15 and 16 respectively. Somewhat beyond the ends of the doors, when the latter are in their closed position, the door frame is also provided with brackets 17 and 18, which carry sheaves or sprockets 19 and 20. A chain 21 passes around the sprocket 19 and the sprocket 15; and a chain 22 passes around the sprocket 20 and the sprocket 16. It will be seen from this that if one of the chains is moved in either direction, the other chain will move in the same direction. 7
The hangers 11 of the doors 10 and 10 are connected by cross bars 23, the crossbar 23 of the door 10 being connected to the lower part of the chain 22, and the cross bar 23 of the door 10 being connected to the upper part of the chain 21.
From the above, it will beseen that when the door 10 is moved to the left,to open the same,it will cause, through the chain 22, a clockwise rotation of the sprocket 16. The sprocket 16 will effect a corresponding rotation of the sprocket 15, which will cause a movement of the upper part of the chain 21 to the right, such movement being proportionate in extent to the movement of the lower part of the chain 22 to the left. Thus the door 10, which is connected to the upper part of the chain 21, will be moved to the right at the same speed, and to the same extent, as the door 10 is moved to the left. Suitable devices, such as those indicated at 24, may be provided for taking up any slack in the chains.
The door-operating device of my invention is extremely simple in construction, as,
well as being compact and presenting no parts which are liable to get out of order.
Moreover, it is positive in its function of causing either door to move proportionately to the other door. It does not present any slack chain at the center of the doorway, as has been the case in previous constructions wherein a single chain extending the entire width of the doorway has been employed.
