01mm BAILEY, or ELIZABETH, new JEitsEY, ASSIGNOR T0 EMiL BLOCH, OF NEW l YORK, N. Y.
DRESS-FASTENER.
To all whom it 'm (43 concern:
Be it known that I, 01mm BAILEY, citizen of the United States, and resident of 58 Summit road, Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey,,have invented certain new and useful' Improveinents in Dress-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dress fasteners and has particular reference to an improved construction of the said fasteners.
As is well known dress fasteners are composed of two members, one of which memhers is attached to a certain portion of a dress or garment while the other member is attached to another portion of the said garment which is to be fastened to the said first portion; the said two members are then pressed together in order to fasten the said portions of the garment together.. When so pressed together the two membersof the fastener are retained in closed position by means of a spring until the tension of the said spring is overcome by forcing-the said parts apart.
My inv'ention aims at providing a socket member for a dress fastener of simple and compact construction, the parts of which easily lend themselves to manufacturing by mechanical means on a large scale. Fur thermore, the spring which holds the two members of the fastener in closed relation to each other is of a shape which easily lends itself to manufacture by mechanical. means and yet has a greater resiliency than the springs heretofore used, while at the same time it is very much shorter and it is possible therefore, to effect a considerable econ omy of material. Moreover, by reason of the simple and short form of the spring, the mechanism by .which the said spring is formed has a much longer life.
My invention is illustrated in the accom panyirig drawing.
Figure 1 of the said drawing isa plan view of my soeketmember for a dress fastener; Fig-.2 is a cross-section of the same, like numbers referring to like parts.
The said socket member is composed ofa circular disk of sheet metal 16 usually formed slightly concave, the outside edge of which is spunup at right angles to the said bottom portion, 16, for the purpose of forming a rim 4. The upper extremity of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
Application filed February 9, 1915. SerialNo. 6,989.
said rim is beaded over inwardly. The central part of the said bottom portion is punched upward'from below so as to-form. a hollow boss or projection 2. Near the.
base of the saidprojection the latter is provided with two opposite longitudinal. slots 3, 3. 'VVithinthesubstantially cup-shaped vessel thus formed there is located a spring The said spring has substantially the formof a U, and the extremitiesv 8 thereof are bent outwardly inorder to form also two substantiall U-shaped end portions. The central U-siaped part 7 of the said spring bears against the said rim 41-, and the two U-shaped extremities of the said spring also bear against the rim *l, the spring be ing held in position within the said. cup-- shaped vessel by 'means of the beaded over rim thereof. The straight portions of the said U-shaped springs pass within the said slots 3, 3, so that they partially protrude into the interior of the said hollow boss or I A socket member for a dress fastener.
comprising a substantially dish-shaped ves- Se] having a beaded-over rim and a central hollow projection, said projection being provided with two oppositely-disposed slots and a substantially U-shaped spring having the ends thereof reversely bent outward, the U-shaped part. of 'the spring consisting of two portions substantially parallel to each other throughout their whole lengths, the said parallel portions being partially disposed in the said slots, the apex of the U and the extremities of the outwardly-bent ends resting against thebeaded-over rim of the said dish-shaped vessel. 1
w Signed at New York, in the county of New York; and State of New York, this 8th day'of February, A. D. 1915.
