A driving shaft 12 is mounted in bearings at the back of the bed, and a driving pulley 13 is supported to rotate on the shaft, independently thereof, this pulley being arranged to receive a belt 'driven from any suitable source of power. An operating lever 22 is pivotally supported by the bed, and from a banprojecting therefrom, said lever being connected at one end with the stopping and starting pin, and at its other 'end with an actuating rod 23 connected at its lower end with a treadle 24 arranged to be operated by the foot of the user of the ma chine, a spring 25 secured at its upper end to the rod and at its lower end to the treadle drawing said partstoward each other and forcing the rod normally downward and causing the pin 21 to normally engage with the cam 19'. When the treadle is pressed downward, the rod is forced upward, moving the pin 21- downward from engagement with the stop shoulder 20, thus permitting thespring 18 to force the clutch parts into engagement to effect rotation of the shaft 12.

A plunger supporting slide 47 is mounted in a slide-way 48 formed in the bed on the opposite side of the center thereof, from the slide-way 34, .this slide being held in place in a manner similar to that above described, with respect to the slide 33, one of the dove-tailed shaped projections being shown in Fig. 6. This slide bears a washer forming plunger 49 having a central opening 50 in which, in some instances, a perforating plunger, similar to the plunger 41 and operated in like manner, may be located. In the form of machine herein shown, however, the perforating plunger is omitted and the plunger 49 is formed with an opening 51, constituting a die coiiperating with the plunger 41 to produce .the central openings A rivet securing plunger 52 is secured to the slide 47 on its opposite side from the washer. forming plunger 49, the plunger 52 having a centrally located recess in which a rivet punch 53 is removably secured, projecting beyond the end of the plunger 52. This rivet punch is tubular and contains a rivet supporting pin 54 having a head 55 to retain it in place, a spring 56 being located in the recess behind said pin and thrusting against it to force it normally outward.
A cap 57 secured to the plungerlsupporting slide 47, has ,a slide actuating rod 58 pivotally secured thereto, said rod being connected with an eccentric 59 secured to the cross shaft 29, by means of which eccentric the slide 47 is reciprocated. The cap has an opening therethrough registering with the opening 50 in the plunger 49, as clearly shown in Fig; 4 of the drawings. An adusting screw 151 is mounted in the cap 57 and serves as a back stop to properly locate the rivet securing plunger 52 by determiiiing its backward-position in the slide, and a like or similar adjusting means may be emare placed on edge, and a supporting shoe 62 is secured at one end to a block 76 locatedin the slide way 48 and secured to the bed, the end of theshoe being pointed and extending along the groove 39, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, in position to project into an envelop, the end of the flap of which rests against an envelop stop 63 .to be hereinafter described. This shoe 62 has an opening 64 to receive the washer formingplunger 49 by means of which opening and plungernvashers to be affixed to the envelops are produced. A die 98 against which the" rivets are headed by the punch 53 is secured to the shoe, and an envelop guide 99, in the form of a spring, is secured at one end to the shoe and projects to guide the envelop over the die 98 when the former is placed on the shoe, the guide yielding and its free end moving toward the shoe when the riveting takes place. f
A supporting bar 65 is secured to the legs 10 at the front of the machine, and. extends across the machine from side to side, a .rest support 66 projecting upwardly from said bar' at about its center, and having the envelop stop 63, that is adjustably supported on the bed 11, ocated over or resting against its upper end. This gate has an opening 119 in its edge to receive the hollow hub of the rivet, and the cam 118 is so formed that, as the riveting plunger 52 moves forward, it operates to move the gate backward at the proper time to allow the rivet to be carried by the pin 54 against the die 98, a spring 160 returning the latch 117 to its normal position, as shown in Fig. 4. A ratchet wheel 120 is secured to one of the journals of the carrier and is actuated by a pawl 121 supported on a pawl lever 122 mounted onthe journal and connected by a rod 123 with an actuating arm 124 mounted on the slide 47. A pin from the arm 124 is located in a. slot 125 in the rod, and a spring 126 connects the arm 124 with the lever 122 independently of said rod so that, should any obstruction present itself to movement of the carrier to feedirivets along the runway, the spring will permit the arm 124 to move and thus avoid injury of parts, the engagement of the pin with the slot posi- .tively moving the pawl to reengage the ratchet.
A tape feed support 127 rises from the bed 11 and has a foot 128 by means of which it is secured to the bed, this support having branches 129-13l) at its upper end in which a tape feed shaft-131 is journaled. A tape feed operatingv lever 132 is rotatably mounted on the shaft and has a pawl engaging a ratchet 133 secured to the shaft.
The lever 132 may be formed intoa handle 134, and it is connected with the actuating rod 85 whereby the tape feed is actuated by means of the cam 87 on the shaft 28, from whichit will be seen that the feed of the tape at the moistening device and at the upper part of the machine is simultaneous and from the same source. A feed wheel 135 is secured to the shaft 131, this wheel having teeth to engage with teeth on a feed wheel 136 loosely mounted on its shaft and also journaled in the branches 129-130, the

This main feed wheel is rotated as by means of an intermediate gear 148 mounted on a stud on said bracket, said gear meshing with a pinion 149 formed, in the construction herein shown, as a part of the feed wheel 135, said intermediate gear also meshing with a gear 150 mounted to drive the main feed wheel 145.
The operation of the device is as follows: It will be understood that in the first few operations of the machine the tapes 72 are engaged by the feed wheels 135-136 that draw upon the tape until a sufficient length is obtained to engage the studs 147 of the main feed wheel 145. after which the handle 142 is operated to dis ngage the feed wheel 136 from the feed wheel 135, by engagement of the cams 137 with theflanges 138.

The latter now engages the rivet, forces it through the back or" the envelop and heads it on the die 98, securing the rivet in place. On the return movement the spring 56 will forcethe rivet supporting pin 54= into the position shown in the drawings and the spring. (not shown) will return the latch 11? to the position shown, placing the gate in position to cover the runway to retain the next rivet which shall pass down the;runway in positioiron the stop 11%. In this movement of the plunger supporting slide 47 the washer forming plunger 49 is carried forward, engaging the tape 72 in the tape opening 75 on the left-hand side of the shoe 6:2, cutting a round disk -from said tape by the action of the die opening 64, which disk is carried through the opening 64 against the flap of the envelop within the V groove 39, the plunger 49 coming to rest with said disk lying against said flap.
The movement of the perforating and sup porting slide 33 above described, moves the washer forming plunger 36 simultaneously with the plunger 49, the end of the plunger 36 engaging the tape in the opening (5 back of the die plate 38 and in connection with the die opening. 37, forming another disk from said tape, carrying said disk through the opening 37 and against theopposite side of the flap of the envelop from that against which the disk first above described is brought to rest. In this operation the perforating plunger all is also carried forward by means of the eccentric 46,:the plunger 11 reaching its forward position just after the slide 33 has reached its forward position. The slight dwell in the movement of the slides 33 and i7 caused by the eccentrics 14 and 5 passing their centers is made use of for the operation of the plunger 4-1 which, during such dwell, passes through the two disks and the envelo flap and in connection with the die opening 51 in theplungel-e9. produces a hole, thus completing the formation of the washers, the piece taken out from the disks and the envelop flap passing into'the opening 50 in the 'die 19, and eventually, by the successive location of the pieces within said opening, out through the opening in the cap 57 The pressure of the diesat the end of the plungers 36 and 49 will cause the washers, which have been produced from the tapes having one side containing an adhesive moistened, to be firmly afiixed to the opposite side of the envelop.
At the time of starting the operation of the machine, as above described, the end of a finger 108. will be located in the bottom rivet on the holder 90. The pawl 121 will, through the operation of the actuating arm 12% on the slide 4:7 and the connecting parts, rotate the rivet carrier a one step movement,removing the bottom rivet, and passing it along the runway, and in a further movement of the carrier the rivet will be located in' position so that the pin will pass out of the opening in the rivet and allow it to drop on to the stop 114. As one rivet is being removed from the holder 90, the lug 107 on the next succeeding plunger engages the cam plate 111, drawing the finger radially inward so that-it may pass under the end of the track 110, and just as soon as the lug disengages from said cam plate the finger snaps outwardly into the b-pening in the rivet. 1
The rotation of the cam 87 by the shaft 28 through-the actuating rod 85 and lever 83 and connecting parts, will simultaneously operate the ratchet feed to impart a step by step movement to' the moistening rolls 70 and to the main feed Wheel 1145, thus imparting a step by'step movement to the paper tapes which, being passed through the water or like moistening material within the boxes 69, are properly moistened to be aliixed to the envelop flap hereinabove described.
ln placing the rivet-s upon the holder 90, the handle 95 is operated to rotate the holder disk 89, thus placing the holder 90 in a di.a metrically opposite positionfrom that shown in the figures, in which position, by means of a loader or otherwise, the rivets are placed upon the holder. The aliner 96- is now swung upwardly projecting the hubs-92 of the rivets into the groove in the aliner, thus bringing all of the arms 93 into alinement, after which, the aliner being moved to its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, the holder is returned to'its normalposition, as shown in Fig. 2,. and the arms of the rivets being thus alined will properly enter the groove in the guide 94.,
It will be understood that if it is desired to affix a Washer to one side of the envelop flap only, this operation may take place simply by omitting a paper tape in one of the openings 75 on that side of the flap to '125 which it is desired'th'e washer shall npt be ailiXQd. r it I I i l I While I haveshoivn'and described herein a form of mechanism employed by mefor effecting the desireda'esults, it will be understruction herein shown and described.
The holder disk 89 is yieldingly held in different positions, and especially in its feeding position by means of a spring seated pin 152 and having aibeveled end engaging recess 153 to resiliently hold the disk. By application of some force to the handle 95 the disk may be disengaged and moved to a different position.
I claim:
1. A bed having a groove therein, a shoe supported by the bed, an envelop rest underlying the shoe, the latter having an opening and an anvil, a slide mounted in said groove for reciprocating movement with respect to said shoe, a block secured in said groove, a, plural number of plungers projecting from said slide through openings in said block, one of said plungers beingadapted to cooperate with the opening in the shoe and the other with the anvil thereon, and means for operating the plungers.
' 2. A bed having a slideway therein, blocks located in said slideway and spaced apart to provide an opening, an-envelop rest located underneath said opening, a shoe adapted to receive an envelop and secured to one of said blocksand projecting within said opening, said latter block having a groove constituting an opening for a paper tape behind said shoe, a die plate secured to the opposite block that has .a groove forming an opening for a paper tape behind said plate, plungers slidably mounted to operate through openings in said die plate and shoe and upon said envelop, a riveting anvil located on said shoe, and a slidably mounted plunger adapted to operate in connection with said anvil.
3. A bed having a groove in its upper surface, a block located in said groove, a die plate-secured to the face of said block, a slide mounted for reciprocating movement in said groove, means for operating the slide, a plungersecured to said slide for movement in an opening in said block, a second plunger secured to the slide for movement in another opening in said block, and an anvil to coiiperate with the second plunger.
4. A bed having a groove in its upper surface, blocks located in said groove and spaced apart to form an opening, a shoe adapted to receive an envelop and secured 'to one of said blocks and projecting along said opening, an envelop rest located underneath said opening, a slide located in said groove back of each of said blocks, plungers secured to said slides to operate in connection with die openings on the facing surfaces of said blocks, an anvil secured to said shoe,

5. A bed having a groove in its upper spaced apart to form an opening, a shoe adapted to receive an envelop and projecting from one of said blocks and having a die opening, an anvil secured to said shoe, a die on the face of the other block, a slide mounted in'said groove, plungers projecting from said slide and movable through surface, blocks secured in said groove and openingsin a block, one of said plungers to coeperate with said die opening and the other with said anvil, a slide located in the I to cotiperate'with said die opening in effecting a cutting operation, a second plunger movably mounted in the first plunger, means for operating the second plunger, means having a die opening to cooperate with the second plunger in effecting a cutting operation, another plunger secured to said slide, a shoe to receive an envelop to be operated upon by said plungers and having an anvil to cotiperate with the last mentioned plunger, and a rest to support an envelop in connection with said shoe.
7. A slide, means for operating said slide, a plunger secured to the slide, a second plunger located in the first mentioned plunger, means for operating the second plunger, athird plunger secured to said slide, a shoe to receive an envelop to be operated upon by said first and second plungers, an envelop rest underlying the shoe and an anvil secured to the shoe in position to cooperate with the third plunger.
8. An envelop rest, a shoe projecting to support an envelop located on said rest. said shoe having a die opening, a plunger movably supported to coiiperate with said opening in cutting a piece to be attached to the envelop, a riveting die secured to the shoe, a plunger movably mounted to support said die in the riveting operation, and a riveting plunger movably mounted to affix a rivet to said envelop.
9. An envelop rest, a shoe supported to receive an envelop on said rest, said shoe having a die opening, a riveting .die supported by said shoe, a plunger movably mounted to cotiperate with said die in aflix ing a rivet to an envelop, a slide movably mounted, a plunger secured to said slide to cooperate with said die opening to cut a -piece to be aflixed to an envelop. and a plunger secured to said slide to support said riveting die in the riveting operation.
' 10. A support for ,an envelop, means for supplying to said envelop a piece cut from a tape, toothed members to receive the free end of the tape to impart feed movement end of said tape, and a single feed operat ing mechanism connected with both of said feed devices.
12. An envelop support, means for cutting a piece from a paper tape and for affixing it to said envelop, a toothed feed mechanism to engage said tape, saidmechanism including toothed wheels one of which is,
