RESCUE-SADDLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WVILLIAM DE LUDE and ALBERT H. STEELE, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rescue-Saddles; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to a rescue saddle and more particularly to a device for use by firemen in carrying persons from a burning building, the principal object of the invention being to provide a saddle which may be attached to the firemans back and to which a helpless person may be secured in order that he may be carried from the building on the back of the fireman, while leaving the arms of the fireman free for use in descending a fire escape or ladder or for carrying other objects. In accomplishing this object we have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring more in detail to the drawings: 1 designates a back plate, which may be composed of metal, stiff leather or other suitable material and which is preferably shaped to fit the back of the person and upon which a saddle 2 is mounted, preferably by means of a seat bar 3 and brace 4 that are attached to and project from the rear part of the back plate. The back plate is provided with slots 5 at the corners, and intermediate the corners, for receiving straps 6 that are adapted for passing about the shoulders and body of a person and most of which are adapted for connection with buckles 7 on a breast plate 8, although some, like the straps 9--10, are adapted for extending about the Waist of the Specification of Letters Patent.

person and for buckling at the front. The breast plate is preferably composed of leather and the straps are of suflicient length to provide adjustment of the saddle to persons of different size.

Attached to the breast plate 8 is a strap 12, the free end of which carries one or more rings 13, that are adapted for taking into a hook 14 on the breast plate, the end of the strap being preferably connected with one side of the breast plate and adapted for running beneath the arms of the person carrying the saddleand across the opposite shoulder so that it may extend around a person seated on the saddle and firmly attach such person to the back of the person carrying the saddle, thereby securely holding the person on the saddle so that the carrier may have his arms free to assist him in descending a ladder or for other purposes.

It is apparent that a saddle of this character may form part of the equipment of a fire department and that all of the straps may be adjusted prior to use of the device, so that when such use is required the saddle may be easily and quickly attached to the body of the fireman and be ready for immediate use in case of necessity.

Assuming that the saddle is attached to the back of a person seeking to rescue another from a burning building, such person may place the person to be saved on the saddle and extend the loose strap 12 about his body and attach the end of the strap to the hook on the breast plate, so that the person on the saddle is firmly held, and with such arrangement the carrier may then easily and quickly descend a ladder or a stairway, as his arms are free to assist him in such descent. It is also apparent that with this arrangement an unconscious or hysterical person may be removed from a building with greater safety and despatch than could otherwise be done.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

1. A rescue saddle comprising back and breast plates, means connecting said plates for attaching the same to a person, and a seat mounted on said back plate.

2. A rescue saddle comprising separate back and breast plates, straps connecting said plates and adapted for attaching the same to the body of a person, a seat mounted on said back plate, and waist straps con nected with said back plate, substantially as set forth.

3. A rescue saddle comprising a seat plate, having a seat mounted thereon, a breast plate, means connecting the seat and breast plates, and a strap having one end connected with the breast plate and having a free end adapted for attachment to said breast plate.

4 A rescue saddle comprising a seat plate adapted for application tothe back of a person and provided with a seat, a breast plate, straps connecting the seat plate to the breast plate and auxiliary straps for attaching the seat plate to the body of a person.

5. A rescue saddle comprising back and breast plates, straps for detachably connecting said plates, a holding strap having one end permanently connected with the breast plate and detachably connected with said plate at the opposite end.

6. The combination with back and breast plates, of a seat on the back plate, a hook on the breast plate, straps connecting said plates, and a holding strap having one end Copies of this patent may. be obtained for five permanently attached to the breast plate and provided with means at the opposite end for connection with said hook.

7. The combination with a back plate and a breast plate, the latter provided with buckles and the former provided With straps for connection with said buckles, a Waist strap connected with said back plate, a holding strap having one end permanently attached to the breast plate, and means on the breast plate for holding the free end of said strap, for the purpose set forth.

8. The combination with a saddle, of a breast plate, means for connecting the saddle with the breast plate, a holding strap having one end attached to the breast plate, a plurality of rings on the strap and a hook on the breast plate for connection with any one of said rings.
