IMPROVEMENT IN DOUBLE-TREES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,777, dated October 10, 1871.

To all lwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED LOMAX, of La Porte, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented a certain Improvement in Double-Trees for Gultivators and other Implements; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exa ct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which, together with the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, form part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.

This invention relates to a doubletree for use upon cultivators and plows of all kinds, as well as other vehicles and implements in which an adjustability of draft is desirable; and the invention consists of two eveners pivoted to the tongue or center piece at a short distance apart, and connected together at'the ends by stayrods, or, in lieu thereof, a chain consisting of long links. From the ends of the front evener depend two Vertical standards, rigidly connected io the evener, and fitted in front with avertical flange pierced with a range of holes from top to bottom, affording an adjustable attachment as to height for the single-trees. From the bottom of the standards and to the rear proceeds a second stay-rod, usually connected to the rear evener by the same attachment as the upper one, above mentioned. The object of this invention is to construct a double-tree which shall be capable of the nicest adjustment to throw the weight from the horses7 necks, to possess all the advantages of an evener or draft-distributer, and to be exceedingly strong and light.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making use,in so doing, of the aforesaid drawing.

A is the front evener, and A the rear evener, both centrally pivoted to the tongue B. C C are the pendent standards, attached to the outer eX- tremities of the front evener, and provided with the range of holes e in the flange f. D D are the usual single-trees, shown attached, by means of hooks, to the standard C. E are the upper stayrods, which proceed from an eye in the upper eX- tremity of the standards to a staple at each end of the rear evener. F are the lower stay-rods, which proceed from an eye in the lower extremity of the standards to the same staple. For convenience, I usually make the upper and lower rods upon a side continuous and of one piece, looped through the staple, as shown in the drawing.

Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The double-tree above described, consisting of the pivoted eveners A A', pendent standards G C, and stay-rods E F, substantially as specified.
